King of the Hill Dota Series: The warm up
-The King of the Hill DotA Series is sponsored by Rectron and powered by eGamer and Twilight Gaming-
In case you’re been living under a rock for the last month, spend every available spare moment trying to practice farming like blizzy (ed: we all know blizzy practices to farm like me ;)) or really don’t keep up to date with competitive dota, here’s an introduction to the King of the Hill series.
What is that you say? Don’t know much about competitive dota? Well here are the basics. It is classic 5v5 dota (don’t know what dota is, check out Dota All-Stars) using captains mode. The start of the game is a little different to your standard AP (All Pick) and starts with hero drafting. How this works is as follows; one team’s captain is randomly chosen to go first and has 40 seconds to ban a hero from the match. The opposing team’s captain then has 30 seconds to ban a hero, and this continues until each team has banned four heroes. Then the team that started with the ban phase picks the first hero for their side to start the picking phase. There are a total of six picking rounds with each round lasting between 30 and 60 seconds with each team having an additional 45 seconds of overtime. The picking breakdown looks like this assuming Team A is chosen to go first:

Â
Once each team has picked five heroes, the match commences with any team member being able to select one of the heroes their captain has drafted. From here on it’s all about pushing and owning, farming and toying with opponents to quote bass hunter, until such time as either team -FF (forfeits) or until a team destroys the opposing team’s throne/tree.
King of the Hill, or KoTH as we like to call it is pretty simple. Every week the team that is King of the Hill will battle a challenger, with the winner retaining/winning the title of king. Winning a game as king earns you points, points earn you prizes, prizes make your PC better and a better PC’s get you chicks. Yes there are awesome prizes to be won, sponsored by Rectron, so bring your game. For a more in depth look at how KoTH works, check out http://egamer.co.za/koth-dota-sign-up/
So far KoTH has nine teams signed up including the likes of Tankh (April DC VII winner), Mint Gaming (January DC IV winner), Pantheon Gaming and Mmk. These nine teams will be entered into the polls for the community to vote on who should play in the very first match (12th May). New teams can sign up any time to be entered into the following weeks vote. To sign up click HERE.
Tonight just to get things warmed up, we’re having a little exhibition match where we’ll be piloting WAAAGH TV (http://www.waaaghtv.com/) so you can stream the match live, and watch just how the pro’s do it. Our exhibition match will be between the on form Tankh and the recent runners up at the OC dota (Organised Chaos LAN) competition Dedicated`Abuse(dedA). There are no points in this one; it’s just for bragging rights.
Match starting time will be 8:30pm, so don’t be late. After the game, we’ll post a summary of the game as well as open the voting so be sure to check it out and vote for who you think should be first up in the fight for King of the Hill.
