With pricing set at $30, which is roughly around R240, it means that hopes and dreams of an awesome free game are now shattered.

Recent Heroes Of Newerth news in South Africa revolved around a local iGame server, which would be running as a ‘master’ server. This pretty much means that you will still need international access to login to the game, and then will it will allow you to select the local server from the drop down box.

The benefits from the local server will allow local game play, which could reduce the already minimal delay.

Although many people are excited about the local server, is it worth it? Well, it’s a tough question. For those that route their own traffic, for example people that only use international for international sites, and local for local sites, the addition of this server will benefit them. However for over 90% of the people that do not use routing, you will still be capped just as fast. It will use your ‘local’ bandwidth, which actually counts towards your first (x) amount of international bandwidth (cap). Once you have reached your cap limit, regardless of what it is or how you used it (locally or internationally) you will still be capped.

The capping wouldn’t exactly be a problem if local ISP’s routed local and international traffic, or if we could get a local authentication server to login before playing on a local server – this will allow you to use a local only account.

Overall we’re unsure about the statistics regarding the amount of players that will be playing in, say, 3 months time. Below we set up a poll to see how the community acts to the the pricing and also a few more details behind the local server. Perhaps many of you can use this as an indication before you buy the game, it might help you decide if you are wasting your money or not.

On a side note, we’ve spoken to a few players in the community, and also overheard that many people would only purchase HoN if it became a lot more competitive. At the moment there are a few ups to the new game over DotA when playing in a public game, however, when it comes to competitive play, does HoN have what it takes?

Public game play beats DotA hands down – it’s a given. Competitive.. Well, we’ll have to see what S2 comes up with to win that market as well.

Let us know what you think about HoN and what it lacks in the comment section below.

Would you buy HoN for $30?

The other issue I have is paying for a game that’s still buggy. What stops S2 from taking my hard earned $$$ and then not working any further on the game?

Also have to agree with the competitive theme. Is it quite up to Dota’s standards? Personally I think not (yet).

  • 1337BuNNy

K well think of this, if everyone had to buy dota now whould you pay R240 for Dota? But then the problem comes in you don’t need to buy dota.

  • http://marc-bowes.com saidin

Yes I would buy DotA for R240. And I did. It’s called Warcraft III. HoN is crazy behind competitive DotA, as most of it’s pro’s (built in VoiP, stats, …) really don’t affect competitive play. Nobody in the competitive world is bothered by running VoiP separately, cares about their KD ratio, … – game play is all that matters.

DotA has had years head-start into developing balanced, bug-free heroes, and even they don’t have it right. It’s going to take S2 a long long time to catchup to that standard.

Bells and whistles don’t equate to a good competitive game. Most of history’s success and failure stories have hinged around competitive play. An example is Counter-Strike which did very well, but then Source (with better graphics, blah blah) was outright rejected by the community, even though casual play was doing OK. For Quake 3, people turned off graphics to improve their competitive edge.

I like HoN as a casual game. However, it’s got a long way to go before it can top what IceFrog has to offer.

I pretty much agree with saidin above.

I will probably end up buying Heroes of Newerth purely because A) it’s quite fun and B) it certainly has potential to be good. Time will tell, but I’m really enjoying the beta of HoN.

Personally, I think R240 once-off payment is definitely reasonable. As said above, you already paid that for DotA when you bought WarCraft 3. :D

HoN is cool. Don’t get me wrong. But thing is it needs a lot of improvements.

And people have been quick to shout Beta. But then again, this beta is almost over. When it’s done it will still take time to get to where DotA is.

    It’s tricky :/

  • Golradir

If it has a local server, that I can access with local cap then yes. I play DotA for fun and pubbies anyway. So the increased eyecandy of HoN is nice for me. BUt as I said. Local server is a must.

I really hope they make a local server. I know the net code is good, but with a server here just imagine; it will be like your on a LAN. :)

  • Divinity

A local server is a must, as well as the updates to the game.By local server i mean.I want to be able to use my local bandwidth.

The price seems fair for this NEW game but should be lowered to about R120 – R150.

  • lokix

Is the LAN aspect going to be unlocked, or is that only going to happen later?…

  • Nitrate

Looks like the local server is off?

  • Tody

Yeah, it seemed to just disappear all of a sudden. I wonder what the reason is this time. Either way, local server or no local server, not much is going to change :/

    @lokrix
The LAN aspect will not be unlocked until the full game releases as far as I know. There hasn’t been any mention yet of S2 unlocking it during the course of the beta. It’s not even 100% confirmed that LAN will appear in the final game, despite the locked LAN option. Time will tell, but for now Heroes of Newerth is online only.

  • fiftybmg

Yes, I’m happy to pay. I don’t care about the finesse of hero balance and competitve nuances. I want a game that doesn’t LAAAAG ALL THE TIME !!

$30 is cheap to save my nervous system.

  • Heimer

The graphics interfere with the gameplay for me. The interface/visuals should be improved before I will buy it. Sure the game is fun, but I want to be able to see what I’m killing without zooming in all the way.

  • sheol666

hmmm before going commercial please fix the lag problems. And there where times that you can’t control your character and get killed. And there are times you get disconnected on a clash. Even if your computer had a good internet connection it seems that lag is really a problem to this game so fix it first. and try to fix heroes that are too godly even at level 1 or 3.

  • arnold
