StarCraft 2 delayed to 2010 – This will not affect Diablo 3
It was announced by Blizzard in a press release that StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty would not be releasing in 2009. The game’s new release date is set for “the first half of 2010″ which is the region where most of 2009′s delayed games have been moved to. Blizzard claims that the reasoning behind the delay is so that they can “continue to polish and refine StarCraft II,” as well as “work to make Battle.net the premier online gaming destination.” However it was said that the new battle.net was the main reason for the delay as they plan to make it as good as it can possibly be, which makes sense when considering that StarCraft 2 is based purely on its online (excluding the single player campeign of course), because it was previously announced to contain no LAN support. So as it stands we’re awaiting more details on the upcoming Beta, Battle.net and the game’s final release date, all of which have been promised to be revealed in the future.
Regarding Diablo 3, Mike Morhaime, the (Blizzard) company’s president, made the following announcement, regarding StarCraft 2′s delay, in an article on Shacknews: “I will confirm that the move of StarCraft into 2010 does not affect the release schedules of any of our other games. He also went on to briefly speak about the feasibility of having StarCraft 2 and Diablo 3 release in 2010: “We haven’t announced any release dates on any future title. And I’ll also reiterate that the [move of] StarCraft into next year does not impact the schedule. And so it would be correct to conclude that you could expect two releases of Blizzard next year. But I will not make any conclusion as to what those titles will be.”
So to conclude, it’s quite disappointing to see StarCraft 2 delayed to 2010, but I guess it isn’t much of a shock either. As for Diablo 3, you won’t have to worry about it getting a further delay because of StarCraft 2. We’ll be sure to have more news on StarCraft 2 and Diablo 3 as soon as possible.
