South Africa’s largest online league, AGASA, has announced a contentious decision to phase out support for the popular game Defense of the Ancients (DotA) in 2010. This is, according to the AGASA Committee, in order to orientate the organisation’s full resources towards a potential replacement in the hero-based RTS genre: S2 Games’ Heroes of Newerth (HoN). DotA has a significant local following; however, most local players choose illegally pirated installations instead of purchasing the legitimate game. This has made the title almost impossible to source sponsorship for.
This week, in an exclusive interview, an AGASA representative told eGamer:
“We’ve spent over 4 years trying to source a viable sponsor for competitive DotA, but nobody wants to touch it. Piracy was the major reason why we were not able to lobby for DotA to be held at rAge. Despite the presence of an enormous local community and the arrival of a number of stable competitive teams, it’s a risk which sponsors aren’t willing to take – and rightly so.â€
Heroes of Newerth might offer the local community an opportunity to build the hero-based RTS genre into something which dwarfs the likes of Call of Duty and Counter-Strike.
“The potential is there. It’s a rapidly growing community and a game which has already begun to prove its worth across the world. Aside from the chance to revive the DotA community’s reputation, HoN offers players heaps of functionality which the non-standalone alternative never will.â€
Being dropped from a match mid-game (one of the major downsides to competitive on-/off-line DotA) is alleviated in Heroes of Newerth through the game’s ability to let you rejoin a game after being dropped. The netcode (the language which the game uses to transmit game data to other players) is also substantially improved which means that local teams are able to compete against overseas teams on a more equal playing field. Heroes of Newerth also offers players and spectators a big step forwards in terms of graphics and gameplay dynamic, although this does require better graphics and processing capabilities.
S2 Games also recently released their online clan management facility, which allows players to easily manage their clans and players, along with stats tracking and easy matchmaking. The ESL, Europe’s largest online gaming league, also recently got their first HoN Competition underway, with over 80 teams taking part.
“We’re not happy to say goodbye to DotA, but we have to be realistic. The community will never really have an opportunity to reach its full potential with the reputation it currently has. I doubt that HoN will ever replace DotA as a free-for-all title, but competitively, I hope that the community makes the shift towards something sustainable.
We want to push for HoN’s inclusion in the Do Gaming leagues next year, which will mean that it will see major sponsorship and prizes – possibly to the extent of Call of Duty 4. All that has to change is the mindset. For the fun and enjoyment you will get out of it, buying HoN for 30 dollars is really worth it in the long run. â€
AGASA will continue to offer support for DotA for the first half of 2010, although it will no longer offer the free weekend cups which became a monthly event this year. After the phase-out period, DotA will be moved to the archived games section and will no longer be supported.
Although Heroes of Newerth is still in its beta testing stages, many of the country’s top DotA clans have already begun to form HoN teams as the title aims for full release later next year. AGASA has already started working towards an introductory competition to be held in Q1 2010 and registrations will open in January.
AGASA would like your feedback, so let us know by adding comments.

There will always be those who scared of change, especially from a game as successful as Dota.
Hon is almost identical, it feels a little faster meaning Current dota pros will need a bit of practise with Hon before they are playing as well as they did in Dota.
Good Dota players who tried Hon and got owned will often be very critical of the game.
Those who have played hon beta for a while now will tell you that they cant go back to Dota (it just feels so much slower).

Tbh, i think the majority of people commenting with favour toward HON, are the sore losers that were spat out of DOTA because they were incapable of trying to learn its true inner workings and synergy..
but good luck, i hope the flame is worth it young moths.. just dont get too close..

Isn’t there a way to block out international IP’s or something, so they can’t vote on this poll?
International guys, please leave the poll. It really doesn’t affect you. :/

Well done. International HoN Supporters have voted and backed up something they know NOTHING about.
This has nothing to do with DotA vs HoN as such.
Nice!

I’m not here to flame anyone (scant, DeMoNiK) but AGASA moving forward to a new game is actually a total breath of fresh air. They have discovered that DotA won’t be supported by sponsors and that the majority of the community continue to behave like children.
To each his own, I did love my times in DotA, but am now loving HoN even more. Feel free to play whatever you guys want. I have nothing but the utmost respect and support for Twilight and I hope you guys continue doing the great job you always have been doing.
It’s tough to say that the future is definately HoN with all the stuff that’s otw still. Valve could be pushing something out, a mod could also be made for SC2, but let’s hope not as the same WC3 limitations will apply. LoL is a total crock of sh1t, so let’s ignore that. Over 36000 beta users at the moment, be interesting to see how those numbers pan out when the game gets officially launched and people need to buy the game.

Ok I downloaded HoN and got a key, I played 2 games, of about 70 min each at 2am which is <.
WAY TO SHINEY omfg I almost had a seizure first 10 min,
finding items is super hard unless you realise you can click on an item and then just buy its components from there
International players like to prolong a game because its '' fun '' they say. Like my team won both games i played but it takes us 70 min to finish cause those fools just farm and then shout B.
that dc rejoin thing is vrek cool not gona lie
.
Lina = a man now which is sad. but ye used up 70 megs of bandwidth with 2 games fml.

The Problem with HoN atm is balance with its custom heroes. Also its PSR system is a bit like Twightlights’ level system just not as well tuned and at 1500 PSR you are pretty much in the 0 – 15 level bracket on twilight. People worry about KD/ratio and prolong games at lower PSR ratings. It actually gets better with Higher PSR.
Epic sad things though are Igame servers are inadequate really and All S2 original heroes are severely unbalanced.

People are so scared of change. Well unfortunately it is bound to happen. You guys should be happy that HoN is here to take DotA’s place.
Some of the other potential successors like LoL and Demigod, just don’t have the right formula (at least in my opinion).
HoN is DotA HD. It’s the spiritual successor. If you want to deny it, then no problem. Old game communities still work. Just don’t expect competitive support or sponsorships.

Gage that is what this is all about. The lack of sponsorships for DotA in the past, and how WE never had it (Note: South Africa only — the reason for this post)
Now all of a sudden HoN gets everything, thats why people are sad.

I still think its pretty pathetic how another company, just copies a game like this like a carbon copy, just with better graphics (or so they say).

Well whats funny about that my friend is the company, S2, asked icefrog for permission to use the characters and the map before they even started developing so if the creator doesn’t mind then you shouldn’t either

Honestly, I don’t think its a carbon copy. It has a completely different feel to DotA…

The only reason why people prefer DotA to HoN is the fact that DotA = free & uses less bandwidth.

+1
not so much the “free” though,
1st of all, its hard to get a (legal) version of warcraft III since, if you can buy it at all, you have to dig in the classic or golden oldies section LOL
HoN is $30, thats not a lot, about R250~300. Plus, you dont need to go and get the game in a store, since youre basically buying an account, not the game

If DotA had proper sponsorship, it would be a lot more popular and competitive, but that doesn’t change the fact that there are still tons of players that still play dota for the love of it. The number of users on Twilight everyday proves this.
I tried HoN, and tbh I felt like it was over done, and imbalanced (but as time goes by it will get more balanced with new patches etc). The biggest problem for me, was the graphics, some of you may like it, but for a game like DotA, too much graphics just screws it up, as well as lame animations on spells. Such as Shadow Fiends Raze’s etc… Perhaps I didn’t give it time to get used to the game, I played about +- 10 games. Didn’t enjoy it.
@Zer0cool, I disagree, it’s not the ONLY reason, it might be a reason for some, but i’m sure there are others like me, that just prefer dota. At least you can see wtf is going on in DotA during a team battle.

This is where the learning curve comes into play. Only reason why you can see whats happening in battle is because you are not used to the animations of the spells etc. Learn the animations, learn the character skills. Some aspects about hon seem overpowered but thats why the beta testers are there to complain and get the developers to change whats necessary. Hon is the way forward. It can get proper sponsorship and thats why i will support it 100%

well to be honest i do like hon but the only thing from keeping me to play is that it uses to much cap, and that does not work for me.
but i dont see why we can play dota on a competive level and hon, how much money does dota need? pm me Nirate maybe we can talk.
November 11, 2009

kwagga, i find that really strange that you are willing to put money into dota but you complain about hon using too much cap? why not increase your cap size, im sure it will work out far cheaper than sponsoring a dota compo

All of you can say what you want but HON will never get bigger then dota in south africa.

I have to agree with GrIdL0cK on this. HoN has a future in SA, esp if AGASA is gonna support it. IMO Dota has no real future. That said, to each his own. I prefer HoN to Dota. @KisS: I think you’re a LOL and an unQ to be honest. You are a typical example of why i dont play Dota anymore. So fucking NARROWMINDED! Anyway had my say. Hope ppl still enjoy Twilight and what they offer. As for me…HoN all the way

Hmmm yes yes hon owns all, dota was fun for a zillion years (err 5) ect..
Although I can’t really comment until HON goes into open beta.
