Modern Warfare 2 Crushes The Box Office Launch — Over $550 Million Made In The First Week
Question: How much did it cost to produce Modern Warfare 2? Well, the answer is pretty simple, but just remember — not all of the cash made from the sales is profit. Modern Warfare 2 is pretty polished, it has neat effects and small details which you can immediately pick up. Overall, this makes it unique, and also expensive to produce.
Reports have said that the game cost about $40 to $50 million to produce. That’s a lot of cash to pump into a successor-game.
At the moment, Gran Turismo 5 has cost about $60 million to produce, but this has been work-in-progress for five years now, where MW2 only took two years to develop.
While spending cash is always just one half of the project, the next question would be, how much have they made, so far?
Activision has revealed that the game has grossed an estimated $550 million worldwide, in only five days after its release. Uhm, that works out to be about 11 times the amount spent on production costs.
Modern Warfare 2 is now the biggest launch in entertainment history. It has officially beaten Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince which made $394 million. Eat that, boomstick bitch.
MW2 not only crushed the magic-boy, but also Grand Theft Auto IV which totaled $310 million in the first five days. This just proves that shooting down people in an airport is way more fun than stealing cars.
Activision has also commented by saying that Modern Warfare 2 helped Microsoft set the Xbox LIVE record of over 5.2 million multiplayer hours logged on the first day of its release. It was said that 2.2 million users were playing the title on the same day.
