Modern Warfare 2 PC hacked for dedicated servers
MTV Multiplayer blog is reporting that “modders” (otherly known as hackers, coders, bastards etc) have ‘cracked the code’ and unlocked the ability to host dedicated servers on the PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. If the the blog post speaks truly, this was accomplished by the coders gaining access to the developer console, where they then created ranked, “legal” dedicated servers. According to a video posted on Destructoid, players have already begun creating their own rules, such as removing recoil when firing, having infinite ammo, increased firing rates and generally all the other things that turn an FPS into something like DotA’s WTF mode.
And so the plot thickens. Personally I’m on the modders’ side, because dedicated servers should have always been there. However, I’m sure we’ve all heard enough about that, but in all honesty what I’m interested in is seeing Infinity Ward’s and Activision’s reaction to this. Seriously, the cancellation of dedicated server support, amongst other decisions made by Infinity Ward, has caused such a massive outrage that I’d probably say that it was one of the most controversial things to happen in 2009. What’s extremely funny here, and quite ironic, is that this [modding] was supposedly what IWnet tried to avoid.
More on this story once it becomes available – and if. Let’s see what Infinity Ward will say to this.
