Rage – the next title, to enrage PC owners, with no dedicated server support
Variety’s game blog has posted news which has id Software’s John Carmack step up and admit that it’s very unlikely that their new shooter/racer game, Rage, will support dedicated servers. This news is definitely not going to fly well with PC owners, but admittedly I don’t really know a lot about Rage to offer much comments on this, nor do I know how much gamers are anticipating it. However, I certainly don’t think this is going to increase its popularity – especially not after Infinity Ward’s “outrageous” storm-invoking announcement where they canceled dedicated server support for the PC version. I really hope this isn’t going to become a trend to further upset PC gamers. John Carmack, co-founder and technical wizard of the developer, said the following regarding this: “It’s not cast in stone yet, but at this point no, we don’t think we will have dedicated servers. The great thing is we won’t have to be a pioneer on that. We’ll see how it works out for everyone else.”
Rage is set to release somewhere in 2010 on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox360. I’m wondering if id software are going to imitate Infinity Ward and replace dedicated servers with their own matchmaking setup, similar to that of IWNET, for online play. In conclusion, it’s not 100% confirmed that there will be no dedicated servers for the PC version of Rage, but the situation doesn’t seem very positive either at this point in time.
