Bioshock 2 Multiplayer: No LAN or Dedicated Servers
Now this comes as a surprise. 2K Games have confirmed that upcoming Bioshock 2: Sea of Dream’s multiplayer component will NOT support LAN or dedicated servers. Taking into account that the original Bioshock didn’t even have multiplayer and this doesn’t sound like a great move to me, because people don’t really have an idea of what to expect from the multiplayer of Bioshock 2, and are mostly in it for the single player at this point in time. Also, despite how crap it is to hear this, I can’t say anyone will be too heartbroken over it, since, well, you’re not really going into Bioshock 2 for the multiplayer. In a Q&A on multiplayer posted at the Cult of Rapture, 2K Games explained that their reasoning for not including LAN and dedicated servers is because of them ordering priorities within a limited time for development.
“Bringing Multiplayer to BioShock was a daunting task between the tech (there was no multiplayer support in the codebase from the first game) and the expectations of the community. Either you try to do everything and so nothing feels finished or you focus your efforts to do a smaller number of things really well like an accessible online experience.”
The rest of the Q&A offers more details on Bioshock 2′s multiplayer. Look out for Bioshock 2 releasing on the 9th of February 2010 in North America and on the 12th of February 2010 in Europe and South Africa.
