Oh the horror! No LAN or dedicated server support for Command & Conquer 4
It seems that developers are taking their revenge on all PC gamers for piracy with one lethal, game breaking attack: the abolition of dedicated servers and LAN from PC games. Either one or both get removed. It happened with Modern Warfare 2, StarCraft 2, Bioshock 2′s multiplayer and a host of other games recently. The latest target in this ruthless attack is none other than upcoming Command & Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight, which, in addition to requiring you to be permanently connected online while playing, will not feature dedicated server or LAN support.
According to lead designer Sam Bass, the reason is because of the global player progression system, which is “across single-player, multiplayer and skirmish and all the information is stored in a server. So if you go to another machine — friend’s house, Internet café — whatever, you can login with your profile and all the stuff you’ve unlocked is accessible to you there. It all lives on a server so you can’t really do dedicated servers with that.”
Furthermore, EA Los Angeles has “completely redone the networking back end of this game.” This new system is supposedly “a lot more solid, a lot more modern. There’s a really solid networking and just sort of getting into a game is much easier then it was in the past.”
Sorry PC gamers, but this one seems to be contaminated too. Is DICE’s Battlefield: Bad Company 2 the only game that is trying to make PC gamers happy?
