Platinum Games’ New Shooter, Vanquish, Won’t Have Multiplayer

Platinum Games’ New Shooter, Vanquish, Won’t Have Multiplayer

If you’re not entirely sure who Platinum Games are, they’re well known for their recent action title Bayonetta and for the critically acclaimed Mad World. Now, the matter at hand is that Platinum Games’ upcoming, new third person shooter, Vanquish, will not have multiplayer modes. That’s very interesting seeing as how the nature of this game, which is a sci-fi third person shooter featuring awesome-looking armoured suits and weapons, makes it an ideal candidate for multiplayer.

It’s not really disappointing, it’s just surprising, because, well, every single game has tacked on multiplayer modes these days, and when one is coming out that you’d expect would have it, doesn’t, yeah, we notice it. As it stands, Vanquish is a single player experience only, which is fine with me, as I prefer multiplayer games that are meant to be multiplayer and vise versa.

“Vanquish is very intense, full of action. There are just so many things going on,” Vanquish game designer Shinji Mikami told website Eurogamer. “When you take that into a multiplayer environment, then you have to realistically consider shaving a lot of things off and putting them into your multiplayer environment.”

“It kind of boils down to whether you have the multiplayer but you don’t have that much impact, and end up being like everyone else. Or even below par,” he added. “So that’s the main reason we’re keeping Vanquish as a single-player experience — to deliver the level of impact, the level of detail and the visuals we want to offer.”

I see the implications of not having multiplayer, I mean, multiplayer can add extra worth to a game, but at the same time it could also add more negatives. Also, not having multiplayer might reduce the incentive to buy Vanquish, but then again if they can present a great single player experience this just might be irrelevant. Still, looking at this game you’d expect it to have multiplayer of some sort, perhaps the developers don’t feel like it? Or don’t feel up to competing with what’s out there? Who knows, but right now I’m interested in Vanquish.

Vanguish will be released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox360. As for a release date, that’s still to be announced.
