[UPDATE]Mortal Kombat Returns In 2011
Warner Bros. has lifted the curtain on a completely new entry in the Mortal Kombat franchise, and it’s due for PlayStation 3 and Xbox360 in 2011 next year.
It looks like the game is suffering from Medal of Honor name syndrome (MoHNS…or something) as it’s currently just known as ‘Mortal Kombat’. The game is in development at NetherRealm Studios and it promises to make a “triumphant return” to the series’ violent roots, coming equipped with a completely new graphics engine and new gameplay features, like the tag-team mode.
Martin Tremblay, president of Warner Bros. Interactive commented on the game, saying: “We are bringing the Mortal Kombat franchise back to gamers with the talented NetherRealm Studios team creating the game fans long to play,” adding, “Re-establishing the brand with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Mortal Kombat innovates on past games while staying true to the brand’s legendary characters and fighting style.”
“We can’t wait for players to get their hands on Mortal Kombat,” added NetherRealms creative director, Ed Boon. “This game really is a response to what players have been demanding: mature presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever!”
And something more from the press release:
“Mortal Kombat introduces a number of new game modes as well as the most extensive online experience ever seen in a fighting game. Up to 4 players can battle “tag-team”- 2 players can team up in the new “Co-op Arcade Mode” or compete against another team online.”
Sounds good, but I’ll much rather wait until I hear and see more before I get my opinion going.
Update
Here’s the game’s official trailer! There’s gameplay too, sweet!
*Note: Don’t let the name of the video mislead you, it’s also coming to PlayStation 3 – this is confirmed at the end of the video as well.*
Thanks a lot Strega!
