Portal 2 Multiplayer Is A Lie

Portal 2 Multiplayer Is A Lie

One of the big new additions to Portal 2 was supposed to be a new multiplayer component that would take puzzle-solving to the next level but has now been removed from the game because it instead swapped puzzle-solving out for utter ”chaos”.

It was intended to feature both competitive and co-op multiplayer but according to Portal 2 writer Erik Wolpaw, it was similar to Speedball with portals and really just didn’t work at all.

“Along with co-op, [we had] the idea of sort of a competitive Portal multiplayer. We went down that path, actually, for a little while and had something up and running,” he said.

“The best way to describe it is sort of Speedball meets Portal. You know, a sports analog.”

He later explained this analogy by saying that the mode required players to move an actual ball from point A to B in the shortest time possible using portals. Other players would try and stop you by throwing portals that would get in the ball’s way and sending it away.

“It quickly became apparent that while it’s fun for about two seconds to drop portals under people and things like that, it quickly just devolves into pure chaos,” Wolpaw conceded.

“It lost a lot of the stuff that was really entertaining about Portal, which was puzzle-solving. Cooperative puzzle-solving was just a much more rewarding path.”

Sadly, we will never get to experience the Portal 2 multiplayer, no matter how much we want to. Is anybody reminded of cake right now?

Co-op sounds like tons of fun, and the whole “chaotic” Portal deathmatch do make sense, it’d get very boring very fast.
