Question Of The Week: If A Game Could Save Your Life, Which Game Would Be The Hero?

Question Of The Week: If A Game Could Save Your Life, Which Game Would Be The Hero?

Okay, that’s not really the Question — but it is very similar. The above was used for title purposes only.

The Question: If you found out that you could artificially keep yourself alive by inserting your brain into one of your favourite games — what game would it be and what character would you be?

It’s a bit of a tough question, but it’s an interesting concept.

Your answer should be honest. For example, you’d want to be able to make sure that you stay true to yourself, because we know that most of you aren’t Kratos from God of War.

Last week we asked you: The Most Overrated Game Is?

There were loads of interesting and good comments. A lot of us had feelings similar to those in the comments, but we felt the best and most truthful answer was from Strawb3rry.

Congratulations!

The number one most overrated game (series) of recent history is no doubt “Mass Effect”. I’ve never been able to play that game for more a three or four hours. I mean come on, I’m a huge fan of sci-fi. I’ve watched every episode of Star Trek The Next Generation THREE TIMES! I’ve played every Star Wars game (on PC). Played Star Craft every year since its release up till this year.

Maybe I only like sci-fi with the word ‘Star’ in its title. But like many trekkies, I’m also an avid role-player. I know the rules to AD&D, spent 67 hours in Dragon Age: Origins, I’ve played Diablo 2 for an ungodly amount of time (with Pwn-Movie for that matter). I’ve finished Neverwinter Nights one and its expansions, Neverwinter Nights 2 and its expansions TWICE. I’m unashamedly a tremendous nerd. I can unequivocally say that Mass Effect is NOT an RPG.

Sure, you play a role in a balanced combat squad, and you play the role of the squads leader, but you don’t get to make the character what you want in as precise a way, with as much divergent character options as do any of the afore mentioned games that have drained so many hours from my life.

In short Mass Effect sucks big hairy donkey balls dipped in sour cream.

The most original, and best motivated answer will win a R200 eDreams voucher. Remember, you don’t need to be the hero to get the girl voucher!

Thanks to Hannes Toerien for the question. Even though we altered it a bit, deep down inside we know that it was your idea..

Ash Ketchum from Pokemon Yellow for sure, I have an unhealthy childhood obsession with Misty, and i’m gay for pokemon.

    • FinalNight

we are all gay for pokemon… and misty is beter than Elisha Cuthbert.

  • reVelske

Huh? She’s just a gym leader, she has little to do with the game’s story.

  • IceWalker

I would have to say Harry Potter (even tho the games were shit haha)… the fantasy world saving my life would be so awesum!

W00T! Thanks for the prize, guys. Just so we’re clear: I liked your website before you gave me money.

As you may have gathered from my previous (award-winning) comment: I heart role-players. I love RPG’s for their depth and the freedom they can grant you to make the game’s protagonist your own. Sure, Max Payne was a serious badass, but if I had to relive his trials over and over again, I would rather die.

Role-Players also tend to offer the most content in terms of sheer volume. One more feature they accomplish more naturally than do other game genres is sociable interaction. Not just interaction with other people, but interaction that is marked by a relaxed atmosphere. Other games like Quake Live, or Modern Warfare let you socialise with others, but in a strictly competitive environment. Online RPG’s offer both of these scenarios…

If I was going to be artificially kept alive, with my consciousness transported into a game universe, I would need a lot to do, I would need more than a single protagonist to get bored with, I would need people to befriend and people to compete with.

For these reasons, I would choose Lord of the Rings Online. For those reasons and because Tolkien’s fictional universe is by far the coolest thing ever created.

I would have to say fallout 3. Who wouldn’t want to live in a society where there are essentially no laws, and you could travel around the wasteland looting and killing everyone and everything in sight. (Yes, I’m a sadistic bastard).

Not to underestimate the dangers of doing so, obviously I’d have to have the requisite skills and proficiencies to survive there (Level 20 should be fine). All I’d need is my trusty Pipboy on my arm, a sniper rifle in good condition and Dogmeat at my side.

Actually, come to think of it I think I’m gonna start a nuclear war so that I can make this fantasy a reality right now.

I’ve got to go with… Final Fantasy VII (wasn’t hands down, beat out Mass Effect). :P

Mainly cause of the revolution against Shinra, “fighting the good fight” and all that. I’d probably be a member of AVALANCHE, hopefully not one of the dudes who die a few mins/hours into the game. >_< Main reason being, they fought for what they believed in and changed the world in the process – as well as fought along side out-of-this-world peeps like the ex-SOLDIER Cloud.

Meeting detailing the next reactor-sabotage in a few mins… gogogo to 7th Heaven!

If I were to choose a character from any game… I would be the God hand in the black and white series.

You had a pet… you could choose between good and evil
You could rain chaos or live like a hippie
you had a temple dedicated to you to “chill in” in your spare time
You could perform miracles pretty much whenever you wanted to.

The game that would save my life would be: Magic the gathering: duels of the planeswalkers. No one is truly a nerd until they are a MTG nerd. It requires a whole new level of nerd-dom. And i am not ashamed to admit it.

But how would it save my life? That one is easy.
I would be playing in the magic world tournament, and a bunch of mafia-types would have bet a bunch of money on me. I would have won my first game and lost the second, and take a break before the final tie-breaker in the form of match three. Then the mafia-types would threaten to kill me if I lost the final match (this would create the dramatic, life-threatening situation, most likely accompanied by tense music). I would sit down at the table and the situation would progress to the point that I had 2 creatures, my opponent had 1 creature to block with, and I only needed to attack with both my creatures to win, since he would be tapped out with no combat tricks. At this point, magic the gathering: duels of the planeswalkers would burst in with a tacky, cheap looking suit, saunter up to the table and physically stop me from attacking with my second creature. Just like it always does when I play online. It would also make a noise comparable to the sound of a thousand wheezing americans, just like the online play FORCED chat system does in MTG: DotP. Thankfully, my opponent would somehow lose his will to live after seeing me stall out in that final turn which I should have won, and would quit, preferably through the form of suicide in sheer frustration.

And that is how MTG: DotP would save my life, although admittedly it was also the cause of the situation, so it’s not a real hero. The real hero would be Sarkhan the mad, because he is mad. The end.

  • man-a-tea

And here he is to take a bow in person for his heroic planeswalker-type deeds.

Oh wait, sarkhan is the bad guy… FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUU

  • Fiona Cameron

I think Dune II. I would build myself an Empire and protect myself with the biggest and the best weapons.

  • Haig

hmmmm the guy that can kill anything

  • http://www.TinyMethod.com Zaphire

If I would be in a game I would choose Garry’s Mod. The character I would be is the player :D
I could build my own vehicles, structures and anything you can think of. You can also spawn some fruits to eat LoL. And who says there aint no meat? You could just spawn any NPC and kill him/her and YUM YUM!
Would never be bored , and would never die as they would respawn me :D Change maps and also you could play online with other players so you could communicate and have fun with them aswell.

  • Deiwos

If my brain had to be put into a game, It would be Oblivion and I would be a Daedra Lord.

I have always loved RPG’s, especially the entire forgotten realms series, Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale (1&2), and I have loved dungeon crawling and finding rare and powerful magical items in them.
But, for those who have played dungeon keeper, I am obsessed with building and baiting dungeons.

The reason I chose Oblivion is because it is an entire world that was created, much like Tolkien’s fantasitic universe but on a MUCH smaller scale. Having such a large world with its own lore built around the old principal of adventurers looking around in abandoned crypts and dungeons for items of value and power is perfect bait for a group of confident vict…. adventurers to try and brave my dungeons ;D

Niko Bellic from Grand Theft Auto IV. I can do anything I want!
