Question Of The Week: The Most Overrated Game Is?

Question Of The Week: The Most Overrated Game Is?

There are so many games out there – some are unique, some are carbon-copies; some are good, some are bad. But what game do you think is the most overrated?

We’d love to talk about it in this post – but we’ll keep it for the comments instead. Each and every one of us have our own idea of an overrated game, so what’s yours?

Last week we asked you Why Do You Like Gaming?

There were loads and loads of good answers as to why y’all like gaming — but in the post we said we’d randomize it. So for those that commented with good answers, we appreciate it!

The winner for last week is SairenSA.

This week, to win the R200 eDreams voucher, you’ll need to comment with enough reason as to why you think the game is overrated. Seriously, it can be any reason. The best, or most passionate/convincing/truthful answer will win.

Oh, and just so you know – Heroes of Newerth isn’t a good answer to this question. We already know it’s overrated..

The rules:

- You must comment with a valid email address else you cannot win!

I’d say that games like Halo are quite overrated. I don’t feel that they are all that Americans hype them up to be. Sure they are good games, but every comedy show and almost every movie which involves gaming always comments on Halo.

In that sense I find it a bit overrated..

  • Hannes Toerien

The most overrated game? Well it’s simple and don’t hate me for it, but Guitar Hero. Firstly, there are 500 million versions out already and if that isn’t enough, they have competitions for it. Sure it’s enjoyable the first time you complete the campaign, but really who are you fooling when you get up on a stage and act like you can play awesome songs? This is not meant to rag on good Guitar Hero players, but a friend of mine says that the only thing Guitar Hero helped him with in actual guitar playing is the slight increase in his fingering agility.
To top it off, it’s played by people who are not able to summon up the courage to learn how to play the instrument themselves. You may ask how I could possibly know this, and I will say: “Because I am one of those people!”
Honestly though I vote Guitar Hero as most overrated game.

    • Hannes Toerien

LoL, I thought this was to determine most overrated game, not most beloved game by millions of fans and game to rape my pc…

  • Wan

I would say WoW is the most overrated game…
It’s boring and repetitive and no real skeelz are required nowadays.

  • PwN-MoViE

    diablo 3 :O
its not going to come out for ages? . . (they just patched d2?)

and besides, people spend lifetimes on d2 just to get the right items, what makes blizzad think they going to just give up

its going to be played single player for a week, and then everyone is going to go back to there d2 online and rage what a letdown it is

    • reVelske

Eh what? I cannot see that to be a likely scenario, if anything, they should be eager to start fresh and explore the unexplored, seeing how D2 has been played to death over the last 10 years. Those who has spent half of their lives grinding for items are the ones who’d be most eager to try out the new game, considering how D2 really doesn’t have all much to offer once you’ve known the game inside-out, everything must be deathly stale to them. Maybe some of us will revisit D2 for nostalgia sake eventually, killing random monsters here and there, but to drop D3 completely would be unthinkable.

…Unless it really turns out to be crap though, but knowing Blizzard, that’s unlikely.

    • Strega

Couldn’t agree more… Diablo 3 is going to be so many times better than D2, and the people that have spent all the time getting items etc in D2 are going to be the ones playing 24/7 to do it again in D3…

  • IceWalker

i would have to say crysis… all that hype about the game and i hated it from the start haha

  • The_Lurch

I would have to say spore. I played the game for an hour or 2 and then never again.
it had a unique idea but it was only fun for the first hour after that it was just plain boring.

Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII

7 was a good JRPG and sets the standards for the genre, no arguments there, but does it deserve its MAAASSIVE fandom? I don’t know, there are a handful of RPGs that are fully capable of matching (if not exceed) what FFVII had to offer: Phantasy Star IV, Grandia II, Tales of Phantasia, etc, they all come with absolutely gripping story, interesting and unique gameplay and colourful characters. Why don’t they have armies of fanboys backing them up? I’m not quite sure, just because FFVII has a spikey blonde hair teen protagonist with his unrealistically huge sword? And his pale nemesis with inconveniently long pale hair with his unrealistically long katana? Because it’s from an already well established franchise? Because it came out on a very popular system at the right time with the right marketing? *shrugs* That’s all fine and dandy, but its fanboy army’s blind insistence that FFVII is the best RPG ever is just shallow and foolish. It’s as if the game is a magnet for dumb kids who don’t know any better.

And don’t even start with “But Aerith dies! Killing a main char? Best plot element ever!”, JRPGs have been killing main chars long before FF7 was even conceded, Phantasy Star II, Phantasy Star IV and Final Fantasy V comes to mind. PS2/4′s character deaths were every bit as emotional as your Aerith death, if not more.

And FF8? Unlike 7, I don’t see ANYTHING good about this (except for the character Laguna and his friends, their bits were the most entertaining parts of the game, but that’s besides the point). So what do we have here… a stale but (supposedly) highly customizable system that actually robs characters of their uniqueness (might as well play FF1 and make four Red Mages) and completely loses its point half way through the game, a decent enough story, a group of characters that are poorly developed (some characters did not receive any development past their introduction) and the main character is as stale and emo a character can possibly be… Yet people love him. Guess the kids love their emo/silent type and want to be just like them. Oh fucking well.

Now with that said, I thought Final Fantasy VI was a work of art, and Final Fantasy IX was nothing short of brilliant and a return to the franchise’s roots.

    • Strega

Ok now… i will agree FF IX was a brilliant game… But FFVIII had the ultimate customizable system… I mean come on the Juncrtion system was awesome with countless different options to achieve awesome results… Having the GF’s able to “junction” to any character and to grow in power with that character and to get weaker if you put elements like a Fire and Water GF on one person… All of that was brilliant! And the Draw magic option was also awesome! and the Card System was Great! it was basically identical in FFIX, just a bit easier IMO… Never played VI, so cant comment…

I must also agree about FF VII… i never saw the appeal? I thought 8 and 9 were WAY better than 7…

    • reVelske

Well, my issue with the junction system is that by the end of the 2nd disk, all your characters should be all maxed with the best spell junctions (assuming people have been paying attention), and it’s not like you have much of a choice, there’s really just one set of spells you SHOULD junction, everything else is inferior regardless of the character.

Also, Magic in FF7 is relatively useless… aside from healing of course, you can pretty much steamroll through the game with physical attack (learn to time your critical!) and limit breaks. For the odd spells that do come in handy from time to time, they are mostly the best junction spells, which means you can’t really use them else you’ll be weakening your characters.

    • http://www.d4rk.co.za NeoN

Oh no you didn’t. >_< Am way too tired to argue with you, so I'll let you have this one. :P

    • reVelske

Haha I knew I was gonna get a response from you, well like I said, 7 wasn’t that terrible, but just not deserving the “BEST RPG EVER!” title the fanboys like to crown it with.

  • Strawb3rry

The number one most overrated game (series) of recent history is no doubt “Mass Effect”. I’ve never been able to play that game for more a three or four hours. I mean come on, I’m a huge fan of sci-fi. I’ve watched every episode of Star Trek The Next Generation THREE TIMES! I’ve played every Star Wars game (on PC). Played Star Craft every year since its release up till this year.

Maybe I only like sci-fi with the word ‘Star’ in its title. But like many trekkies, I’m also an avid role-player. I know the rules to AD&D, spent 67 hours in Dragon Age: Origins, I’ve played Diablo 2 for an ungodly amount of time (with Pwn-Movie for that matter). I’ve finished Neverwinter Nights one and its expansions, Neverwinter Nights 2 and its expansions TWICE. I’m unashamedly a tremendous nerd. I can unequivocally say that Mass Effect is NOT an RPG.

Sure, you play a role in a balanced combat squad, and you play the role of the squads leader, but you don’t get to make the character what you want in as precise a way, with as much divergent character options as do any of the afore mentioned games that have drained so many hours from my life.

In short Mass Effect sucks big hairy donkey balls dipped in sour cream.

    • SairenSA

      Haha, nice chart

    • http://www.d4rk.co.za NeoN

Reading these comments is hurting more and more. T_T :P

    • Strawb3rry

i just realised how my Venn diagram looks very similar to the default profile pic

  • Droof

Gonna go wiht Hannes here… Guitar hero and the rest of the series DJ hero / Beetles Sing along / Banjo Hero. Very overrated title.

  • Strega

For me the most overrated game, and I know there are going to be plenty of guys that disagree here, was The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion…

Ok so picture this… Little old me… Just got my hands on a new PC… Awesome Specs and all and all…(this was like just as the game came out) I’m lank happy with myself… So I ask a mate for a game to play and he says he has this game he couldn’t play coz the game is HECTICLY intensive on your machine… so I pop the game in… and wait… and wait… and wait… FINALLY the game is installed…

So now I’m not one of those people that like to get all the info I can off the net before I play a game so I practically know the game inside out before I even start it… So away I go… And I’m pretty impressed by the fact that all the trees are moving… the grass is blowing in the wind… But I can see F-ALL like 20 meters in front of me??? Alas I continue down a stupid little pathway in the middle of nowhere, and eventually… after like half an hour of just walking… I come to a Tavern like thing… I go inside and I’m looking around… and there is like nothing to see… I can’t even find anything cool to pick up… I’m already pissed at how long it’s taken me to get to the piece of shit tavern and now there is like nothing there…

Anyway… now I decide to leave my nice “Path” and walk off into the grass field… I meet up with some guy and a chick… and they totally annihilate me… like I don’t know what the hell just happened… At this point I’m thinking OMG worst game EVER!!!!!

Now honestly… Even when I figured out you could get a friggen horse… it still took so long to get anywhere… For a game that got such good reviews everywhere I still to this day cannot understand why anyone would want to sit through hours and hours of that abysmal story… Maybe it was just because of how long it actually took for something to happen that I hated this game… I don’t know… but for me… most over rated game EVER!!!!!

    • Strawb3rry

      oh my sack, nub! facepalm

    • M0fla

You do know there was a fast travel option?

  • A-G Sonday

Halo, WarCraft, Final Fantasy. i just pissed off a whole lot of people by saying that but it’s true.

  • SairenSA

Grand Theft Auto 4. Hugely overated. They, (Rockstar.. or some other douche bag that had a couple of bright ideas of fake hype.) promised some radical weather and season system plus.. and and and And. So yeah. GTA 4 was just pathetic for words. My suggestion, Rockstar, GTA 4 graphics + GTA San Andreas level of things to do = Win.

    • http://egamer.co.za/ Tody

SairenSA, I could not agree more  Grand Theft Auto IV is one of the most overrated games ever…once I played Saints Row 2, I could never go back to playing GTA IV. It’s just too slow, boring, all the effort is in the entirely wrong places, there are too many tutorials, the pacing is ridiculously slow…I could go on forever

Whereas in Saints Row 2, you start the game by breaking out of a prison and blasting away an army of police…

    • SairenSA

Great minds think alike Tody! :D Man, Saints Row 2′s co-op was the best! Especially the Insurance Fraud, me and my friend had epic laughing sessions. xD
I still remember the days when I chopped cops with the heli-propeller, haha, epicness…

    • http://egamer.co.za/ Tody

Indeed! Hahaha it’s bringing back memories now! One of my favourite things to do in the game (single-player) was choose the martial arts fighting style and then relive Matrix Reloaded as I challenged 30 gangsters to a fight

Throwing people 40 feet…sky diving at any time…exploding everything with a flaming buggy…playing that mini game where you have to get owned by cars in speeding traffic and rack up points with air time and multiple bounces on the road and off other cars….Man I want to play the game again!

Especially because I never got to play co-op! Sigh, Saints Row 2 is my favourite sandbox game

Love the piccie for this article, was the one I had in mind when clicking on the link. >__>

  • Michelle Lorraine

Well, all the games I’ve play so far I think that none are over rated. ;-)

  • EX_Machina

Grand Theft Auto IV… no… that game is not good in any conceivable way. It is GUTTER TRASH… its not a game, it’s a f@#king job…. why the hell did it sell so well?

    • http://egamer.co.za/ Tody

It sold so well because it has “Grand Theft Auto” in the name – and “Rockstar” backing it  And I guess massive overrating by critics furthered that :???: I definitely agree with it feeling like a job.

    • Paul

I agree. Apparently critical reviews that are in a game’s favour tend to correlate with high games sales…

    • EX_Machina

Long story short: looks like a lot of people got paid off…

    • Strawb3rry

Reminds me of that Kane & Lynch fiasco with Gamespot and Eidos a while back.
But yeah GTAIV got nothing on Vice City, but it was still way cooler IMO than that lame piece of s**t San Andreas

      Oh, no he didn’t!

    • FireFlyZA

I totally agree – my opinion is that there is always this huge hype around GTA titles….. yet GTA just doesnt grab me like it should. I dont know if it is because of all the hype and you expect it to be awesome, or what it is…. I honestly dont know. But whenever I hear GTA in the title I’m like “here we go again – DISAPPOINTMENT”

  • lloyd

It has been said and it shall be said again: most overrated game ever award goes to…

    WoW, congratulations! :D

Motivation: I think Cartman’s plan in South Park speaks a fundamental truth about WoW… We only need to kill 65,340,285 boars, which should take us 7 weeks, 5 days, 13 hours and 20 minutes, giving ourselves 3 hours a night to sleep.

It’s the kind of game that people waste their life on. I mean really, “you can just hang outside in the sun all day tossing a ball around. Or you can sit at your computer and do something that matters… ” That is the WoW mentality.
I tried the free month, and I just couldn’t do it. A lot of my friends said I have to persevere to find the fun part, but if a game isn’t fun for a whole month then what is the point? It’s a game, you are meant to enjoy it, it’s not a second job!

I have to tell you that I recently went through a bad stage in gaming, and decided to give up on the world… of warcraft.

Lol so I leave you with one final epic quote of nostalgia “How do you kill that which has no life?” Really, how do you kill a wow player?

    • dean0

      Kill his WoW!
