Call Of Duty: Black Ops — No Dedicated Servers For South Africa
Josh Olin, Treyarch’s Community Manager, has said that they have signed an exclusive deal with GameServers for dedicated servers for Call of Duty: Black Ops. And here’s the best part: GameServers does not offer any packages in South Africa.
“If players want to run a dedicated Ranked or Unranked server on the PC, they will have to rent one through GameServers. Nobody will have to rent a dedicated server through GameServers in order to play the game, but for anybody who wants to run their own server, it will be run from GameServers.com.”
The exclusive partnership was said to limit and control cheating and hacking. A major problem for most computer games.
“If you rent a server, you will still have the ability to Kick, Ban, and Configure it the way you see fit. Of course Ranked servers will have some set configurations that can’t be messed with; but you will still have the power to administrate your servers as a customer of GameServers,” said Josh.
Previously Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 didn’t offer dedicated server support at all, which means no-one was interested in playing it competitively. After seeing that Black Ops would include dedicated servers, it’s really upsetting to see that South Africa will not be able to benefit from them as GameServers are not interested in offering packages for the local market.
South African internet and connectivity is still too pricey for international companies to be interested in the small gaming market.
Lastly, because it’s an exclusive deal, it seems unlikely that SGS, WAGE, iGame or IS would come to an agreement for servers.
