Question Of The Week: What’s The Biggest Motivation To Buy A New Game?

Money. Excitement. Fanboyism. These are three, of many, reasons why we buy new games.

Keeping it relatively simple this week: What’s your biggest motivation to buy a new game?

Essentially this is part-two from last week,The Most Intriguing Box Art Belongs To?

Religion !! when you worship a game like Diablo. There is no chance in hell you are not buying Diablo3. Its inevitable.

  • ThoR

When it’s a game such as DotA 2 .. There’s no way i won’t buy it becuase i know how epic it’s gonna be and it’s so worth it!!

  • reV

Two motivations really, one is definitely Fanboyism, Super Robot Wars series is a prime example of that for me, it’s a loooong-standing SRPG series that takes mecha/characters/stories from various mecha anime/games and merge them together into one single brilliant game, and being a mecha fanboy, I simply cannot resist it. Then you have something like the recent Transformers: WfC games (DS one, in particular), I know I wouldn’t really enjoy it all that much but I had to buy it because it’s G1 Transformers :V (And I really didn’t enjoy it, though I got a free toy with my purchase so it was all well and good!)

Also, anything that tries to work on nostalgia would usually get a purchase out of me, eg: Contra 4, Metal Slug 7. If say they bring out a sequel for the classic Phantasy Star series (Sega Genesis) or say a remake of Fire Emblem Gaiden (NES), it’d guarantee a purchase regardless of the game’s quality.

And of course, I’d like the try out “new” game, games that are different and not something you find often. Eg: Mystery Dungeon: Shiren The Wanderer (a brilliant “Roguelike” game, a genre you do not see at all these days); Etrian Odyssey series (Dungeon Crawler game, another rare genre); Infinite Space (a mixture of 4X and RPG, but extremely unique gameplay and an intense Space Opera story).

Interesting that you talk about nostalgia. Definitely a powerful move these days. Blizzard is kinda coining it in that respect with starcraft 2 and diablo 3.

Even the next WoW expansion is playing on it. Being a return to the “old world” aka vanilla WoW/Azeroth (excluding northrend obviously)- I play wow and I’ve seen many old school players back from my vanilla days reactivating their accounts in anticipation of this nostalgia ridden expansion.

    • reV

Eh… that’s not what I’d call nostalgia, especially since my SC and D1/2 days don’t actually feel all that long ago :V

And even WoW, how there is nostalgia value in that is way beyond me.

    • Greg

Depends on how you exeprienced things. Nostalgia doesn’t neccesarily mean “more than X amount of years ago”

I think it’s sufficient to be ‘returning’ to a familiar setting after a time of being away from it, in a sense.

So, for example, WoW was first just azeroth or the “old world” but then since january 2007 the bulk of WoW content has been diverted from the old world into new areas, like outland and northrend. Now with cataclysm there’s a return to the old world and familiar settings and as I said, the nostalgia factor is working to bring many old players back.

Oh and since I mentioned Super Robot Wars, might as well post the promo vid of the upcoming SRW-L for DS that’s releasing in November if anyone’s interested to see what’s it about:

I would have to say boredom

    • Scott

I always buy the game for the excitement it gives according to the reviews it gets

  • Strega

    I would say it’s all in the anticipation… :-D

I’m really looking forward to GT5, and yes it’s been in development for F-ing ages and KEEPS GETTING F-ING WELL POSTPONED… But still the Anticipation of getting my hands on it is killing me!!!! :-D

Similarly to Duke Nukem : Forever , Although in this instance I’m not sure if my 12 year anticipation build up is going to be satisfied… Or crushed like a bug…

@REV : With regards to the nostalgia… What about the new Castlevania title? :-D

    • reV

What? Are you trying to ragebait me? There’s nothing more that needs to be said, there is no nostalgia value to be found in the new Castlevania, NONE. AT. ALL. NOTHING. SWEET FUCK ALL.

    • Strega

      Ha ha, Sorry i had too… :-)

  • SairenSA

I’d have to say, excelent publicity and innovation will motivate me to buy a game. Other than that, it feels good to buy an excelent game that’s worth the time.

  • EX_Machina

The voices tell me which ones to buy…

For me, it’s a tie between publicity (kick-ass trailers/word of mouth) and sequels to already awesome games.

Can’t wait to get my hands on HAWX 2. ^^
