Let’s Make A Game Worth Stealing Then Worry About Piracy – Saints Row Dev

In a world where most developer’s are saying that PC gaming is dead and doing everything they possibly can to combat piracy, the developers of saints Row 3 are welcoming it and making the PC versions of their games awesome.

Volition, the studio behind Saints Row: The Third and Red Faction: Armageddon is still intent on making great games for PC without worrying about the piracy that plagues the platform.

“I don’t think [piracy] is something at the forefront for us,” Volition studio manager Eric Barker tells Eurogamer. “First and foremost, we want to make sure we’re making a game people would want to pirate.”

What of the general claims that PC gaming is dying? “We definitely believe PC games are great and if they’re done right and done well by a studio, they’re phenomenal.”

Barker also hailed the upcoming Red Faction game as ”beautiful” on PC.

My new role model; this man is a genius, a beacon of common sense in an industry filled with Bush-mentality.

I think he’s saying they want to make a game that people take an interest in – and if they pirate it, they’re naturally taking an interest in it.

They want to make a game that people actually want to make an ‘effort’ to get. But he’s right in his thinking that pirates aren’t the enemy or some evil to be beaten.

It’s funny though… I pirate games. If I like the game, I go and buy it after having played it (assassin’s creed, assassin’s creed 2 and brotherhood). If I don’t, I delete it and never let it set foot on my hard drive again (That new spider-man.. terrible. Absolutely terrible in my opinion…)

I’m just not going to waste my money without knowing what the game is like ya know? It’s all good and all to have gameplay trailers etc.. but I actually want to PLAY the game before I buy it. Developers glorify their game play videos. And seriously, ten minutes of game play videos simply ain’t enough to make me want to buy a game.

Agreed it is a good attitude, Here’s a bit of food for thought… Why not sell in game advertising… That way the Game Devs make money off the advertising, and it doesn’t matter if people pirate a game… they could even make the game free… Yes i know this would never happen… But i think its a good idea… :-)
