Spider-Man: Edge of Time Announced — Details Included

Activision has finally officially unveiled and announced the new webslinger’s game we’ve been anticipating. Titled Spider-Man: Edge of Time, the game is being developed by Beenox, the guys responsible for the unique and surprisingly good Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions last year.

While the game is due for a sneak peak reveal at Wondercon 2011, which is scheduled for April 2, 2011, we have a few details on the game to share with you, based on what we’ve been able to find out. Firstly, the game is due to release in Fall 2011, which is Spring for us here in South Africa, and it will most likely be on PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox360, Wii and handhelds, although platforms have yet to be officially confirmed.

Spider-Man: Edge of Time focuses on the Amazing and 2099 universes, both of which were experienced in Beenox’s Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions. All we know about the plot at this point is that the Amazing and 2099 universes must join forces to prevent Peter Parker’s (Spider-Man’s) untimely death. From this we can deduce that the game will most likely take on a darker and more mature tone story-wise, hopefully.

The official blurb for the game reads as follows:

“Spider-Man: Edge of Time challenges the player to take on the roles of both classic Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099 to correct a timestream gone awry and prevent a catastrophic future brought on by the early and untimely death of Peter Parker.

“Spider-Man: Edge of Time is a focused, action-packed adventure set in two connected and evolving timelines, from the contemporary times of the Amazing Spider-Man to the corrupted future world of Spider-Man 2099, against the backdrop of a rich, tightly crafted narrative by acclaimed Marvel veteran Peter David (co-creator of the comic book series Spider-Man 2099).

“The game features all-new ’cause-and-effect’ gameplay, where players will see how the immediate and sometimes unexpected effects of their actions as one Spider-Man changes the timeline of the other Spider-Man. Spider-Man: Edge of Time is slated for release this fall.”

And some words from the developers at Beenox:

“The first Spider-Man entry by Beenox, Spider-Man™: Shattered Dimension was touted as one of the best Spider-Man games to date from both critics and fans,” said Vicharin Vadakan, Director, Global Brand Management. “Beenox is once again taking a fresh and different approach to bring a high-octane adventure and unexpected story to life in Spider-Man: Edge of Time.”

“At Beenox, we are constantly listening to the fans and looking for new and creative ways to innovate the gameplay experience for them,” said Dee Brown, Studio Head, Beenox. “We want to create a totally distinct experience in Spider-Man: Edge of Time by working with Peter David on the story and creating this urgent, high-stakes experience where time is working against you and the fate of Spider-Man hangs in the balance.”

We can’t wait to hear more, because we really had a good time with Shattered Dimensions. We’ll be keeping our fingers crossed for this, and eagerly await the sneak peak at Wondercon.

will the spider man series ever end?

Is this a sequel to Shattered Dimensions? If it is (which it seems to be) why aren’t they using the other Spideys as well? Or is the Peter Parker that they’re trying to save one of the other Spideys?

Nothing has been confirmed just yet :P I’m eager to know though. All we do know right now is that the game focuses on the Amazing and 2099 universes, and they have to prevent Peter Parker’s death.

It wasn’t detailed which Peter Parker that is.

Shattered Dimensions was probably the only Spiderman game that was awesome both as an action/adventure and a regular Spiderman game :-) Its really worth the play, trust me

so far as i can figure, the amazing spider-man ie. the real one dies and so you spend the game doubling up as a 2099 and amazing so as to keep order in both universes
