Breaking: World’s First PlayStation 3 Raid Takes Place In Johannesburg, South Africa

The world’s first PlayStation 3 jailbreak raid has taken place in Parktown, Johannesburg, South Africa. The raid was conducted by the South African Police Service’s Commercial Crime Unit which received complaints from the South African Federation Against Copyright Theft (SAFACT) regarding the issue.

According to the report, the Police, assisted by the SARS Computer Forensics Lab, found “various state of the art computers, circumvention software packages, jailbreak USB devices, PS3 consoles and hard drives” all of which were seized. Alongside the hardware, the police also seized fake PS2 games and original PS3 games, which are believed to be used as masters and documentation.

Jailbreak devices are used to circumvent security features on PS3 consoles for the ability to play pirated PS3 games.

One suspect has been arrested and he will remain in custody until the court appearance — in the Specialized Commercial Crimes Court — where he will be able to apply for bail.

This is the first PS3 circumvention arrest in the world.

It’s really about time this story was reported correctly. The raid and arrest were for a group engaged in commercial copyright infringement. They were selling copied products. It was not and could never be for possessing or even selling jailbreak devices or modchips or anything similar as this is not illegal in South Africa.

Honestly if you believe anything that comes out of SAFACT, then you probably also believe whatever the BSA tells you and no doubt think politicians would never tell a lie.
