Ubisoft Moving Away From DRM

Ubisoft Moving Away From DRM

PC gamers can finally rejoice, as it seems Ubisoft is finally beginning to phase out it’s Always-On DRM system. Assassin’s Creed: Revelations will be the first after a long line on Ubisoft releases to not include it’s notoriously famous anti-piracy system.

Speaking to Rock, Paper, Shotgun, Ubsoft confirmed that PC players need to be online when they first start the game, but that no connection is required after activation.

DRM has been a real thorn in PC gamers side, especially when it comes to Ubisoft titles such as Driver: San Francisco and From Dust, which encountered numerous problems that prevented players from being able to play at all. The omission of the counter-measure in Assassin’s Creed: Revelations could mean the Ubisoft is beginning to phase out the system.

Personally, I never had an issue with DRM, but I can see where it caused many frustrations. Was Ubisoft losing too many sales due to DRM? Are they listening to angry customer feedback? Could this really be the end of Always-On DRM? Let us know what you think below.

      My thought exactly :P

Their DRM was giving legitimate buyers hassles, so good on them for listening. Not sure if it was the complaints or the sales figures doing the talking though.

Probably was the sales figures even if Ubisoft isn’t as greedy as Activision. At least their greed is serving to benefit us, for once.

They removed that DRM with Brotherhood. It was with Assassin’s Creed 2 that you needed to be online 24/7 to play. Brotherhood = just online once and you can play to your hearts content.

I’m not quite sure if I really care.  I’ve been through DRM with AC2 and AC Brotherhood and I’ve not had a second’s worth of trouble.  Everything’s been smooth, quick and easy.  Registration was a breeze, games are running fine and I’ve got nothing to complain about.

    Hell yeah! It’s about time.
