7 Of The Best FPS Games

3. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

With this, I am only referring to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and no other game in the franchise. The reason is that I still believe that the original Modern Warfare is the best game in the entire Call of Duty series, and because I have pretty strong opinions about this franchise. This game was just one of the best multiplayer FPS titles I’ve ever had the pleasure of playing on my PC back in the day. With full dedicated servers, a complete reinvention for the series, and brilliant innovation in FPS multiplayer, this game was just an absolute winner. It perfectly crafted systems for unlocks, customisation options, personal player challenges and progression for online play, all of which have had heavy influence on practically the entire genre. Not to mention it brought fame to the “perk” system used so widely in shooters today. I honestly just don’t know of a single gamer who didn’t love this game, and it’s the only title in the series that had me playing it for ages. It was just the perfect game for me with both its single player and multiplayer, and I wish for another Call of Duty game as innovative and awesome as this.

2. Battlefield 2

While Battlefield 3 still needs time to grow, its true predecessor Battlefield 2 is down in my history books as one of the great kings of FPS multiplayer games. It was just endless fun, and one of those multiplayer experiences I could never get enough of. With fantastic depth in its classes and gameplay, which offered ground, vehicle as well as aerial combat, Battlefield 2 was truly a game for any shooter fan. Its signature Conquest game mode is still one of my favourite modes in a multiplayer game to date, and in so many ways this game is just an unforgettable experience to me. Back in the days of having a poor internet connection, I used to go out of my way and do everything I could to play this game even for a couple of hours, and it was just worth it every time. In fact I still miss playing this game, and even though I’m really enjoying Battlefield 3, this title will always remain in my memory.

1. Counter Strike

Without a doubt, Counter Strike is my favourite FPS game of all time. I mainly play Source, and I’m not really part of the whole 1.6 versus Source arguments. I love this game. And the reason I can easily say it’s the best FPS game I’ve played, is because I’ve played it since I got my Half-Life 2 Game of the Year Edition right until today. Of course I’ve taken extended breaks from it, but I’ve always eventually found myself returning to it. Even now, I fired it up again at the beginning of last month and have been playing it ever since. I’ve never grown bored or tired of Counter Strike: Source, and I can’t stress it enough.

How simple is this concept really? There are two teams, namely the Terrorists and Counter Terrorists. Each round lasts just under three minutes, and at the beginning of each round you can use your earned cash to buy gear, equipment and guns. You get more money for winning a round and killing enemies. Now, the Terrorists need to work together to plant a bomb at either site A or B, and defend it until it explodes. The Counter Terrorists need to defuse the bomb. However, if all Terrorists are eliminated or the round time runs out before the Terrorists plant the bomb, then the Counter Terrorists win. If all Counter Terrorists are killed or the bomb explodes, then the Terrorists win. Once a round is over the next begins immediately. If you die, you have to wait until the next round to come back. And that’s all there is to it. It’s the same map every time, the way I play it. Of course there are so many other game modes and servers to play on, but this is just the main mode most people know the game for.

And yet, despite this, it’s still the most enjoyable, exciting and awesome FPS game for me. It requires lots of skill and teamwork if played professionally, but it can be enjoyed at a casual level as well. Although if you’re not that good then expect to die a hell of a lot and fast. It’s all about reaction time and accuracy, because it only takes a few shots to kill a player, and headshots practically spell instant death. There’s no aiming down sights or air strikes or anything fancy, but it’s just incredible.

I’m pretty sure I will only stop playing this game once there are no more players populating its serves, but until then, this is definitely my favourite FPS game.

The Conclusion

That wraps up my list of what I consider to be seven of the greatest games ever to emerge out of the FPS genre. As for your thoughts on my list, I’d be more than happy to hear them, so by all means let me know your thoughts down below. Which of the games on my list have you played? What did you think about them? Do you think that the orbital potato potentially has more energy than the sun?

Let me know down below.

I agree with the above 6 but Enemy territory…mmm its a good game but i dont think it should take the cake..

    • http://egamer.co.za/ Azhar Amien

I’m happy to hear you agree :D As for Enemy Territory, it drew me away from a lot of big-name games at the time, and for a totally free game I just found it amazingly good fun, with plenty of depth.

    • Farkyne

Boja! One for Enemy Territory, had so much fun with that game

    • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

ET was great. Stfu Savy :P

  • omalley

Hmmm no quake or tf2? :(

    • http://egamer.co.za/ Azhar Amien

Both of those games are fantastic, but they were never personal favourites of mine :) I played Team Fortress 2, but I was always going back to Counter Strike or Call of Duty 4 so eventually I stopped playing it.

    • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

TF2 is great. I also asked him about Quake, but – yeah. Personal favs.

  • http://egamer.co.za/author/cavie Caveshen “CaViE” Rajman

I must have blacked out that part of my life where Quake 3 Arena and Unreal Tournament 2004 was the best thing since sliced bread.

Maybe I was too busy having fun with those games to notice the other ones.

I mean really? Wolfenstein? Counter-Strike? Fucking Battlefield 2? I’m sorry, but having played all of those, just no.

It is a subjective list though, so no hate. As you were.

    • http://egamer.co.za/ Azhar Amien

As you said, Cavie. Subjective. Plus these are only seven of the best out of all the FPS games out there. I didn’t say they were the seven best, although they are mine personally.

And Cavie, you’re just bad at Counter Strike which is why you don’t like it :P As for Wolfenstein, for a free downloadable game it’s better than a lot of games out there. As for Battlefield 2, you have got to be joking if you can’t see how good that game was. Oh right, you’re in love with Dragon Age 2 and a defender of all CoD games, so I guess to each his own hey? :D

Regarding Quake and Unreal Tournament, those were freaking awesome, but they don’t make my personal favorites list. Unreal Tournament is definitely in my top 10 though.

    • Timothy

Cavie said the Green Lantern game wasn’t bad and plays it just for the achievements so we all know his choice of games is broken

    • http://egamer.co.za/author/cavie Caveshen “CaViE” Rajman

I mean I didn’t dislike Battlefield 2. I just never really found the multiplayer so gripping that I couldn’t stop playing it. It was decent, for me. Decent. Better than Counter-Strike at least.

    • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

Sorry but Counter Strike has way better MP than most games. 1.6 though.

    • Alessandro Barbosa

I must agree with Cavie on Unreal Tournament, but BF2? Cavie come now, that was the real shit :P

But yeah, no Unreal love Azhar? What’s that all about? :P

    • http://egamer.co.za/ Azhar Amien

I love Unreal, Alessandro :D But this is my top 7. Unreal is definitely in my top 10 though.

    • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

Unreal is good. It should be here. We should play UT sometime.

  • http://www.facebook.com/nadine.franzsen Nadine Franzsen

Okay I’ll admit I’ve only played CoD4 in that whole list. Shame on me, all those games look awesome though.

    • Treble

You better then me I have played nothing

    • Alessandro Barbosa

What!? Both of you haven’tplayed either Portal? Or the first Crysis? I would say shame on you, but I’m too busy feeling so bad knowing that you two are missing out on some of the best games ever created :P

    • http://egamer.co.za/author/cavie Caveshen “CaViE” Rajman

This simply will not do. GO AND GET THE GAMES AND PLAY THEM NOW. At least Portal. AT LEAST.

    • Anonymous

Listen to Cavie, he’s right for once.

    • http://www.facebook.com/nadine.franzsen Nadine Franzsen

I want to play Portal 2, but our darn rental store does not have it. And I’m too broke to buy it :/

  • SairenSA

    Fuck counter strike. :)

    • SairenSA

Your Counter Strike is my Team Fortress 2 in this situasion.

  • Anonymous

Fairly decent list. Personally, I wouldn’t put Call Of Duty up. Rather Quake 3 or fear (1).
No crappy console shooters makes me happy bird though.

  • Treble

Well Portal the whole 4 hour game time scared us away o.O

    • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

      Dude, lol. Seriously?

  • http://egamer.co.za/author/cavie Caveshen “CaViE” Rajman

I don’t think F.E.A.R. was so great, myself. But if we’re keeping things strictly “first person” and ignoring the “shooter” aspect then I might also throw Dark Messiah into the pot if possible. It had elements of RPG in it, sure, but it was linear and story-driven like Portal or another similar game that did not involve bullets.

  • sage of the six paths

I agree with everything but number 1, I didn’t read the article tbh since I’m not in the right state of mind (if you know what I’m saying, Dean certainly does). I’ll read it in the morning and say more.

    • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

LOL. Omg. Also I love CS. So.. I don’t know what you mean :-)

    • sage of the six paths

I wasn’t talking about CS, I was talking about my state of mind. :P

    • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

You said you agree with everything but number one. You aren’t still drunk, are you? @e008af6d1e4e1d2e8a8b0f1a241dc195:disqus

    WWWWWWWWTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Where’s fucking Q3?

    • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

      Dead. :P

  • TwiZtiD

I can agree with the above list yes, but personally I’d swap out wolfenstein for quake 3, that’s my take on it :) good list though.

    • http://egamer.co.za/ Azhar Amien

Thanks TwiZtiD! :D Yeah I knew people would be upset at the lack of Quake in my list, but it’s just my opinion at the end of the day.

  • FoXTiCitY

My opinion would be that half life should be number 1, and COD be number 2. xD

  • sage of the six paths

Still agree with my previous opinion but at least you explained yourself well and I can see where you coming from. Just like Nadine, I’ve only played CoD4 but I’ve heard enough about most of these games to make a somewhat acceptable judgement. I can still DL Crysis and maybe I can try Black Mesa somehow and Portal is easy, just ask AG.

    • http://egamer.co.za/ Azhar Amien

Thanks :D Well, you’re welcome to try out Crysis, Half-Life or Portal at my house any time :P They’re just so damn awesome. As for Black Mesa, that isn’t out just yet, and there’s no release date at this point in time. Haha I think I have AG’s Portal 2 on PS3, so yeah.

    • sage of the six paths

If you’re asking me to move in with you, no. :P
I don’t want to play snippets of a game for an or two at a time but thank’s for the offer. I’ll get Portal from you or AG whenever I can and feel like it.

    • http://egamer.co.za/ Azhar Amien

Haha no ways dude, can’t trust you with my KFC :P I meant to try it out and see if you like it, but yeah I’ll get Portal back to you or AG so you can check it out. Although it’s Portal 2 AG has on PS3, Portal 1 I’m not sure if the jew has.

    • Anonymous

I don’t but don’t you have Orange Box?

  • Toxxyc

I can actually agree with them all, but “7″ is a such a shit list.  I’d have included UT2004 instead of Counter Strike, and I’d have replaced CoD with Mirror’s Edge (although there’s little shooting involved).  Still I enjoyed them all (except for the Wolfenstein one, for some reason :O), and I love that you raised Crysis so high above Crysis 2.  It’s a place it rightfully deserved, in all honesty.

    • http://egamer.co.za/ Azhar Amien

But 7 is a lucky number :O Hehe well actually 5 was too little, and 10 was too long, so I decided to do my top 7 :P Great to hear you’re a UT2004 lover :D That one is also in my top 10, but these 7 games took priority over it in my opinion. Mirror’s Edge, despite being unique didn’t quite capture me.

Definitely, Crysis 1 is incredible and unique. Crysis 2 is decent at best, mediocre at worst. It took everything I loved about the original Crysis and squashed it.

    Great Article,

I just cant agree with Wolfenstein… :-( and UT Should definitely be in there!

But also… and i may get some stick here… But Duke Nuken 3D… It was WAY ahead of its time…

    • http://egamer.co.za/ Azhar Amien

      Thanks Strega! :D

I’m not a big Duke fan to be honest :P I can admit the original was fantastic, but for me personally it’s not in my list. Agreed, as I said Unreal Tournament 2004 is in my top 10 without a doubt :)

Hehe I knew Enemy Territory was going to be hard to swallow, but I love it and think extremely highly of it, especially since it’s a free downloadable game.
