Games To Satiate Your Hunger For Diablo 3

Name: Path of Exile
Genre: Isometric, Action RPG
Multiplayer: Yes
Platforms: PC
Developers: Grinding Gear Games
Publishers: Grinding Gear Games
Release Date: 2012 (Pending Confirmation)
Preview: Hands-On: Path of Exile

Path of Exile is going all out in order to compete in the action RPG war of 2012. If our hands-on preview of Path of Exile doesn’t impress upon you the scope of the game’s character development choices, nothing will. It has an absolutely massive ‘passive’ (massive passive, massive passive, massive passive; sorry, got carried away there) skill tree, the likes of which I have never seen and gives a huge amount of variations to character development. Path of Exile separates skills into the passive, such as attributes, passive buffs and debuffs as well as other misc skills; and active abilities which are acquired through collectable and acquirable gems, used in available sockets.

To diversify itself even more so from the competition, Path of Exile has no currency system. Instead, everything the player needs is dropped as loot. Equipment to adorn; orbs for upgrading; and scrolls to identify or portal around the world, that’s it. There are also currently 5 classes to choose from, with a sixth on the way; each specialising in an attribute like strength or dexterity and the rest are a hybrid of two attributes.

All in all, and as an MMO looking to compete with an action RPG heavy year, Path of Exile and its unique gameplay formula is a definite competitor in my books.

I was never overly hyped for Diablo 3 since I’ve never tried the previous games in the series and only got hyped because of all the other people here getting hyped, but I’m at least glad that you made this list. All the games seemed quite interesting and the all flew completely under my radar. There are 2/3 that I could play and want to try.

    Thanks for the article.

    • Timothy

No prob dude, and some of these even flew under my radar for a while

  • Twiztid

Torchlight, Raw and Grim all looks nice, I think that will definitely subdue my hunger until diablo 3 :P thanks for the list guys! I didn’t even know of half the games until now xD

    • Timothy

Hence the creation of this list :b

Wanna know what I do instead of craving Diablo 3? I play ANY OTHER GAME IN EXISTENCE, because it’s more tangible than the former and I have a better chance of actually feeling some sense of fulfillment.

    • Timothy

No, what you do is think about dates you’d take dude Shepard on if he were alive

    • Anonymous

You just brought Cavie’s entire world crashing down around him by inadvertently revealing that Shepard does not exist, even if he has a blow-up version of him.

  • Treble

Diablo 3 the wait begins o.O

  • wayne savy

The wait begins and never ends dude…

All 5 of these games will be better than Diablo 3 IMO. Well, Torchlight 2 and Grim Dawn will.

    Batman > Diablo 3.

    As well as…

All cool games currently playable > Diablo 3.

  • Cloud Strife

Thanks egamer. This article proves that you understand your readers and their wants/needs. I’m gonna try a couple of these games..

  • Charne Banger

    • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

Well essentially the cop game is the one that the others even watch out for, with their damn speeding tickets and stuff.

I heard Cavie bought these for Achievements although you totally forgot to mention Prison Break: The Conspiracy.

    • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

I think that might be fun though…

    • Anonymous

I rate we give one of these to Azhar for torture purposes and to see him viciously tear it apart. Just for lulz :D.

    • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

I think they might just tear him apart, @AG_Sonday:disqus

  • NeoN

I can totally see myself jamming that police sim. xD lol.

“Hands in the air, this is the po-leese!”

    • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

I don’t think it has Kinect support though, sorry pal :>

D: Dean you’ve got quite a mouth on you. Now go wash it out with soap.

    • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

Hey, I warned everyone what was coming. :-)

Swearing just emphasises. I don’t swear that much, only at Cavie — because it’s Cavie.

    • Anonymous

Dean only swears when he’s sober and alcohol is a better sterilising agent than soap anyway, Nadine :P

    • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

      I wish…

  • wayne savy

The only simulator out there is flight simulator, However that surgery simulator looks quite cool.

    What… The… Fuck…

Pretty sure i summed it up…

  • Alessandro Barbosa

I distinctly remember you telling me that Police Force was going to be awesome :P

    • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

I sort of don’t. As far as I know, you’re lying through your teeth.

  • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

Yeah, we’re poking fun. It’s mere fun – no one is getting hurt. Let’s be honest, this is to our audience at eGamer and none of us have interest in these titles. Because of that, poking fun is in the interest of all of us.

If we had an audience seriously interested in those simulation games, that’s a different story. The way we cover news and features on the site, we’re somewhat sure that’s not the audience we’re trying to captivate anyway.

Because of the strange norms inside our world of eGamer, we find it alright to poke fun at things like this.

While those games are for those who want to play and learn, this article is for us who want to have a bit of fun at what the industry offers — and also learn that it’s not all roses in the world of gaming.

Personally, I don’t see the value in challenging me to create a game from scratch which people will enjoy. It’s not my field of expertise or interest, nor do I want it to be in that field.

I think, on a fair level however, that media (like eGamer) is my field of interest, and I — along with my great team — have created a site which many people do enjoy.

Therefore, in respect to the various fields in which the developers of the above and I offer a service, we have both created something from scratch which people enjoy — and the  audiences who enjoy it are different and have a different mindset.

I do believe that would be a sufficient “answer” to your challenge as I didn’t enter into a development project but rather media.

  • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

    They the boss, bra.

  • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

LOL. I don’t know if you’re being sarcastic now! :-(

  • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

That was the point. Laugh at me though, because I’m rude.

  • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

Hey Brady. We must review these, bra.

  • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

Dude, we find all kinds of crap online. We just don’t always have the chance to post it. Today’s slot was meant to be Matthews column but he couldn’t do it as he’s planning a big review — so I jumped at the opportunity. :D Glad you liked it.

  • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

    LOLSOMAD!

  • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

The only thing it entails is underage sex with still births and babies at 13 years old. Too far?

  • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

Well, now you know about it! That’s why we’re here. Your friendly neighbourhood news site :P

  • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

Yeah dude, definitely. I cannot code that well — anymore. Like I did some stuff before and got some work out, but it’s not my interest.

However — on a level of interest and fun and informative value, I’m sure we’re doing something equally as good here.

    Same results different platform? :P

  • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

Yes, but don’t worry. Forklift drivers have forever been in debt with the awesomeness that is this simulator.

  • http://www.facebook.com/brendon.bosch Brendon Bosch

They took time out of their LIFE to make these games. Suicide is a better option

  • Greatwyt

    …too far ;)

  • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

I think for most of the people, it’s like: MONEY PAY US! And the producers of the game are like “best sellers, yeah!”

    Shame though :>
