This New Half-Life Mod Is Extremely Creepy

Last week, we published a feature revolving around mods for Half-Life 2 that would compel you to bring the game out of the attic and into your PC once more. Now it’s time to dust off an even older game, for an even more awesome mod. Introducing Cry of Fear, an extremely creepy and haunting mod for the original Half-Life.

This mod has been in the works for over four years already, with independent developer Team Psykskallar announcing it ages ago. Last year they released a trailer for the much anticipated mod, and last week it was actually released, bringing with it a whole new way to play Half-Life.

Cry of Fear blends classic FPS gameplay with classic survival-horror elements. Hallways and alleys are dark and damp, puzzles are as hard as ever, and the monsters you come up against are absolutely horrifying. I even jumped just watching the trailer. Team Psykskallar have also brought a whole new way to solve puzzles. By implementing a “Resident Evil” styled inventory system, players must now pick wisely and carefully consider each and every item they come across, since inventory space is limited. Do you take the lantern or the shotgun? The revolver or health?

The mod also features multiple endings and a 4-player co-op campaign with an entirely new side story. Best of all, Cry of Fear is absolutely free to download, and is compatible with all versions of Half-Life, including the one downloaded from Steam. So if you’re a fan of some survival horror, and you have poor old Half-Life in a corner collecting dust, then you might want to check this out.

That was so awesome and it genuinely felt scary unlike most things that pass for ‘survival-horror’. The crappy graphics also made it a bit more scary for me and what was up with that weird mumbling? I wish I knew what it was saying.

These guys are amazing. They’re selling it for free even though they included 4p co-op and an entirely new story with 4 endings, that’s mighty nice of them.

I’m kinda liking it. I mean, who hasn’t thought at one point or another that HL could be turned into a horror game?

Mods and I have a love/hate relationship. One the one hand, I love and adore mods, mods of all shapes and sizes for all games and genres. On the other hand, they’re the reason I never can quite catch up with my gaming backlog, or get all my varsity work done.
