Bleszinski Wants Gear Of War To Evolve In A “Christopher Nolan” Way

Cliff Bleszinski, Creative Director on Gears of War and all things Epic, and a personal idol of mine, has said that if Gears of War was to continue as a series, he would see it taken in a bit of a new direction. It seems as though gratuitous violence and buff soldiers is not the vision that Cliff has for the next Gears of War, if there ever is one.

Instead, Bleszinski envisions a more explorative and adventure-like Gears of War experience, which gives me the impression of an Uncharted-like gameplay. He says that the series tradition of “staring down impossible odds” would remain intact, but the gameplay wouldn’t rely on shock value to entertain the player.

“If I were to pass Gears off to another studio, and they came back with a pitch of having a double-edged chainsaw, and the characters are more buff, and now you can pull off someone’s head and s*** down their neck, and they had a character that makes Cole look tame…I would look at them and say, ‘No, you’re going in the exact wrong direction. Gears is always some of that, but I would want to further evolve it in more of a Christopher Nolan way.”

As you know, Christopher Nolan revolutionized the way we see Batman on the silver screen, as well as producing some of the best movies ever created, such as Inception.

If something like this were to happen, then I would say Epic is on the perfect track. Gears of War 3 is still fantastic, but the experience and novelty it presented was showing age, and a change would certainly be welcomed. In Bleszinski we trust.
