Could We Be Getting An Elder Scrolls MMO?

Following the massive success that was The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (despite its many glaring faults), could Bethesda’s next project be more on the multiplayer side of things? Maybe, Massive Multiplayer Online action? Well, according to Tom’s Guide, that’s exactly what they’re up to.

Tom’s Guide reports that a trusted “industry” source has said that Bethesda are currently working on an Elder Scrolls themed MMO, and will first unveil their project in May. A more extensive showing will be presented at E3, followed by a center stage appearance at QuakeCon, alongside the rumoured Doom 4.

Apparently called “Elder Scrolls Online”, the game will be set hundreds of years before Skyrim and Oblivion, and will feature three playable factions. These factions are represented by a Lion, Dragon and “Birds of Prey” crests.

But where exactly is this smoke rising from? Well, Tom points out that Bethesda have had listing open for this type of title for a while now, with job listings targeting people with MMO experience for a studio “currently working on an unannounced Massively Multiplayer Online Game (MMOG) title from its headquarters in Hunt Valley, Maryland.”

It makes sense for an Elder Scrolls MMO to be released, but for one this soon after Skyrim seems a bit of a long stretch. However, if one is unveiled, it will be very interesting to see just how it will be handled. As long as the old, dated combat system is replaced, I’m onboard.
