What Do You Look For When Buying A Game?

Have you ever stopped to think: I really only like games with multiplayer. Or whatever it is you like.

What draws you to a game, what makes you want to buy that game, or even pre-order it. Is it replayability, multiplayer, graphics, story, or even graphics. What would make you go out, right now, and pre-order a game?

For me, good, accessible multiplayer is quite important. Gaming is really fun with friends. Although, on the flipside, an intriguing story is just as important. If it’s not a popular multiplayer, it needs to be a hardcore story driven game, with minimal action.

Action feels hollow in most games. There’s just too much of it. If the story can incorporate action without overdoing it, that will be great. I’d buy that, without a doubt. As for multiplayer, local split-screen is definitely worth it.

I’m a HUGE fan of medieval style role-playing games so the things I look for mostly are: a really good storyline, then graphics, fluid and realistic combat, good character builds and abilities. Watching gameplay videos on youtube and reading reviews on different sites help me to decide whether a game would be a hit or flop for me.

If the game captivates my interest, I’ll buy it.

Other than that, replay value. Primarily interest though, I mean, I Am Alive was a 5 hour game, I bought it for R140 of PSN (Full price) and loved it. I would buy it again, no argument.

I spent a lot of my early years playing JRPG’s, so that’s definitely influenced my choice in games later in life (with on console to carry on jamming said genre). I still find myself looking for the next epic story, mixed in with some zany action (1st or 3rd person, I don’t mind). I tend to prefer sci-fi or fantasy games over anything down to earth, unless the story element is engrossing.

Achievements. Kidding, I quite like story and setting so if a game has that, then it’s half the job done. If a trailer really wows me than I’m also enticed to try it out, but for the most part I try and stick to games I know I’ll enjoy either because they have a really great atmosphere or I trust the developers to do something great (Visceral, Vigil, BioWare, Digital Anvil, etc).

I like a good story and a captivating single player component.  I prefer SP games mostly because I get annoyed with people online going “lol i shotz ur azz to hellz lolololtrol” very quickly, and then I’ll simply stop playing for weeks on end.  I used to play co-op with the NAG guys a lot, and that was awesome.  Grown-up, serious gaming on Realism Versus made for some of THE best gaming hours I’ve ever logged, but that’s about that.  Otherwise, good story and good SP campaign, which is why I dislike the CoD series so much.  Rather hand me some Dragon Age:  Origins or The Witcher or Mirror’s Edge and I’ll keep myself happy for hours!
