How Do You Get Your Games?

How Do You Get Your Games?

That’s not too difficult a question, is it? Unless you get your games by illegal or violent means. Then it’s just awkward. So anyway, this week we want to ask you the simple question of: how do you get your games? I’m sure you’re tired of seeing and hearing this, but games are expensive. We can’t have them all, but we want many. So we often do lots of different things, some of them even frowned upon, in order to pursue our hobby and not be left out in a dark corner because money is the barrier.

Tell us, how do you get your games? Do you buy all of them? Do you borrow from friends? Get involved in the second hand market? Trade? Steal? Torture or kill for them?

Personally speaking, I’m very fortunate to be able to get to play a lot of games, through various means. There are the games I get sent to review, then there are the ones I buy. I sometimes buy off Steam, with recent purchases of mine being Counter Strike: Global Offensive and Borderlands 2. I mostly buy at BT Games so I can trade in my old games to reduce the price of what I’m buying. I borrow from friends, and I sell and buy in the second hand market, because I wouldn’t be able to keep affording games and have the freedom to buy when there’s something I want if I held onto all of my old games.

The type of gamer I am, I generally want to play everything, or at least all of the major releases in any year. I buy what I feel deserves my money, but I’m not going to pay the full price for something decent or run of the mill. I’ll look for other ways to get it or cheaper alternatives, and personally, whatever moral stance you want to take, I feel there’s really no shame in that. I suppose there have been one or two instances where I’ve waited for a game to get cheaper over time, and that’s a nice option too. Although if you’re like me and want to play games in the year they come out, that’s a problem.

Tell us, how do you get your games? What system works best for you?

My friends and I (more or less) have a really great pooling system with games where we share them amongst ourselves and it’s usually fair where one person lends another two games and gets two games in return. But if push comes to shove, I favour BT Games with their pre-played section. I have been known to buy the odd Kalahari or TAKEALOT game if I get a voucher or a refund on something, but seldom.

Oh I’m not getting Assassins Creed anymore. So don’t expect to borrow it from me.

BTGames and steam, otherwise borrow/share games with friends

A healthy blend of borrowing and review copies. I rarely buy games anymore and when I do it’s games that are genuinely worth it (see: Dishonored, Hitman Absolution)

Kalahari, Takealot, Gumtree, BT Games. First prize is pre-played but some games deserve to be bought brand new.
