This Week In Indie: Tainted Fate, Eternal Eden: Ecclesia And Fist Of Awesome
Welcome back dear readers to this week’s edition of This Week In Indie. This week has been a hell of a lot quieter in comparison to other weeks as the holiday season is in full swing. So to commemorate the festive season, I have a few indie games to discuss that might make your holiday that much better.
So have you ever wanted to fight a bear? Like punch one in the mouth? Well, then Fist Of Awesome is for you as the game will be one of the launch titles for the OUYA, and will be on Android, iOS, PC and Mac. Made by indie studio I Fight Bears, Fist Of Awesome has you assume the role of a time travelling lumberjack who travels in time to fight of variety of enemies, like dinosaurs and bears. Here’s what the developers had to say:
Fist of Awesome is a time-travelling-lumberjack-em-up, a sorely underrepresented genre by anyone’s metric. It’s a modern homage to classics like Streets of Rage and Final Fight, but with more time travel and lumberjacks. The hero, Tim Burr, is a forest dwelling tree feller who gets caught up in a needlessly complex interstellar plot to enslave Earth by populating history with homicidal wild animals The game takes place over a number of time periods, features original 2D art and animation throughout, and is to my knowledge, the only game that lets you punch a full grown grizzly bear in the face.
Then there is Tainted Fate which follows on from the success of prime first person horror games like Amnesia The Dark Descent. However, Tainted Fate follows the story of two different characters, with a varied tone with a greater sense of dark humour and a greater number of RPG elements than Amnesia The Dark Descent. This is what the developers had to say:
Played in first person, it immerses you into a dynamic story that depends on your decisions featuring two protagonists in different timelines on the same island. Escape horrifying monsters, solve puzzles and make decisions that will alter yourself and the shape of the world. The first storyline set in the 1940′s follows a man convicted of murder and sent off to the island for the rest of his life. Soon after being dropped off, strange things start to happen as you explore the island, later developing into a story full of mystery, arcane magic twisted with technology and terrifying hostile beings. The second storyline is set in 2012 and features a young female amateur filmmaker that investigates sites with supposed paranormal activity. Upon hearing about the long abandoned island filled with stories about magic and ghosts, she immediately leaves for the island to film the most terrifying film of her life.
As a lot of you have noticed JRPGs of late have become out of their touch with their own origins, and a revival of what made retro JRPGs awesome in indie games makes many yearn for the good old days. If you’re one of those people looking for old school retro JRPGs with a classic look than Eternal Eden: Ecclesia may fit the bill. The game has the classic look of a SNES JRPG and old school mechanics. The new game, which is in a kickstarter at the moment, will be a direct sequel to Blossomsoft’s first Ecclesia game. The game will be available on a variety of platforms. This is what the developers had to say about the gameplay, which is party-based and turn-based from the looks of it:
In the first game, EE1, you traveled in two parallel worlds, a wink to two cult-classic games I greatly enjoyed when I was a teenager. In my upcoming game, EE:E, the journey has evolved a bit differently; the player explores a single world but it’s constantly influenced by four powerful reality paradigms (Cryo, Terra, Inferno and Omega). I think this concept will amp up the gameplay experience in a totally new and addictive way. That’s my goal, and I’m working hard to make this happen.
Anyway, that’s it for this week. I hope to hear from you guys soon. Remember to keep it real and indie, and also have a great weekend.
