This Week In Indie: Snow Storm Bundle, Retro Arcade Adventure Remade And Spire

Welcome to the latest edition of This Week In Indie. At eGamer we’ve been putting out a great amount of indie related content. I hope this trend will continue in the coming year as we try and push the indie section further and further. This week brings with it a new bundle, a new game from the developers of the game Dustforce and a nostalgia filled retro game to relive your childhood with. Well, let us move on.

The newest bundle to be released this week comes to us from Indie Royale and is called The Snow Storm Bundle. For the current minimum price of $5.38 you will receive with your purchase Resonance which won our Indie Story Of The Year Award, Hinterland, RoboBlitz, StarDrone, Project Aftermath and RobotRiot. Included with this you’ll get OSTs for Hinterland, RoboBlitz, StarDrone and RobotRiot. If you pay more than $8 you can unlock the Planeteri Pixeljam album. Nearly all the games included in the bundle are available for Steam, Windows and Desura. There are five days left before this bundle expires. The games look interesting and with Resonance as the highlight this bundle is great value.

Many of us remember our childhood fondly, particularly the 90s when 16 bit consoles were king and pixels were still very much fashionable. Retro Arcade Adventure Remade (RAAR) tries to grab your attention and make you relive those glory days of pixel destruction with a classic arcade style hack and slash game. A game where you battle through waves of enemies. Enemies will be intense and fast paced, and most probably as difficult, as in the arcade games of old. This will be all be packaged within a modern game though.

The nostalgia factor will also be increased with the soundtrack which will almost certainly stick to the 90s feel of the game. As seen in the video above, obviously the gameplay mechanics are centred around one single screen where wave after wave of enemies attack you. You’ll be forced to fight a huge boss after defeating a number of waves. There will also be powerups in the game that can turn you into a dragon, and much more. The final piece of news we have for this week involves the next upcoming game from the developers, Hitbox Team, of Dustforce. Hitbox Team have announced their new upcoming game called Spire which will be a first person shooter. This is what Hitbox Team had to say about the new project:

Spire is an FPS about ascending a monolithic tower of unknown origin. The internals of the tower are ever-changing: it’ll be a different adventure every time. While exploring, players will encounter myriad dangers and elusive secrets; they must use their wits and limited resources to climb as high as possible.

In the design for the game, Hitbox Team want to have “curated level generation”. This means that environments and transitions will help to tell a story, where levels flow easily together. In essence, there won’t be randomized events. Levels will be generated each time with precise narrative intention. In the game, there will be non-standard creatures not featured in standard fantasy fare. There will be new treasures to uncover and a general mystery within the experience.

As such, you’ll uncover different items which means you’ll have to figure out what combinations of left-hand and right-hand items will allow you to overcome a challenge. Spire will take much influence from Quake 3 and will be a game where a high level of skill is rewarded. The game itself looks promising and with no release date looming; I can’t wait for more details to transpire about Spire.
