This Week In Indie: Space Nomads, Luna Shattered Hearts And Path Of Exile Open Beta

Welcome to another edition of This Week In Indie, we have some fresh news for all readers involving a new game called Space Nomads, as well as Luna Shattered Hearts Episode 1 and news of Path Of Exile’s open beta. This week had some interesting news and offers us a great start to indie in the coming year.

The first game Space Nomads is a first person space fortress building Minecraftian game where you defend your pod which powers your base from an insectoid threat. In some ways, very much like Starship Troopers. The game will feature singleplayer and multiplayer, and be hosted on a server. Once you lose your pod the game ends as it is your key to surviving the harsh reality of the alien planet you have crashed on. This is what the developers, Loading Studios, had to say about Space Nomads:

Stranded on an alien planet, join your friends in a survival journey, explore a randomly generated world, collect resources, build your base, craft weapons and turrets to fight waves and waves of hostile insectoids…. Day after day.

Essentially, it is space survival game with first person shooter elements and this come across well with Space Nomad’s first trailer. This is a game you should be looking out for when it releases.

The next game we found intriguing is called Luna Shattered Hearts Episode 1 and is currently in a kickstarter phase. The game is a very interesting and visually impressive 2D platformer. The game is being developed by Daniel Gill and he had this to say about the game:

Luna – Shattered Hearts – Episode 1 is the first chapter of an Epic Fantasy Legacy! Without ruining the whole plot,it centers around two main characters, Lithien and Dez. They have both done terrible things. Over the course of the game you see them both go through a metamorphosis from being self centered disasters into the heroes that can confront adversity, help others, and change the world! Along the way they form a sort-of… “family of rejects.”

Luna has physically hand drawn backgrounds, instead of tiling as per the norm. Everything has been designed with a great amount of effort and it shows in the trailer. Everything in the game feels natural. There also seems to be some light RPG elements in the game and a great variety of enemies you’ll encounter. It is shaping up to be something special.

Finally the last game we’ll be looking at in this week’s edition is not ‘new’ in any sense of the word. Grinding Gear Games have announced that Path Of Exile is now in open beta. Path Of Exile builds upon the traditions of Diablo 2 and takes the dungeon crawler to a whole new level. The game has advanced skill trees, events and even PvP to a greater extent. The game will also be following a Free-To-Play model, so you can easily play through the game with friends or by yourself. If you haven’t played Path Of Exile yet, we highly recommend you do so at some stage.

Well that’s it for this week, all this great indie news is an amazing way to start off the new year. Remember to enjoy your weekend. Also, keep it real and indie.
