A Star Wars RPG From Fallout Developers? I’ll Take That

Development house Obsidian Entertainment is no stranger to the RPG scene. They developed Fallout: New Vegas, the follow-up to arguably the best RPG ever created, Fallout 3 and Knights of the Old Republic II: Sith Lords, another follow-up to an equally awesome RPG set in the Star Wars universe. While the studio is currently hard at work on South Park: The Stick of Truth, it has been revealed that the want to return to the Star Wars universe, and soon.

Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart has stated that the studio has pitched a Star Wars RPG idea to LucusArts, now that the company has been taken over by Disney. He also revealed that they attempted the same pitch before the acquisition, which was met with a very positive response.

“I would say it’s within the top three pitches we’ve ever come up with.”

The idea behind the RPG is to have it set between Episodes III and IV, making it a lot more current in terms of the Star Wars timeline than say Knights of the Old Republic.

“We think that timeframe is super interesting. It’s the fall of the Republic, the extermination of the Jedi; it’s Obi-Wan going off and making sure Luke is OK. You have the Sith, but you have the extermination of all Force users except for very, very few.”

The studio has yet to pitch the idea to Disney, but feel confident that it’s only a small step in a long road ahead. Apparently when Obsidian first pitched the idea to LucusArts in October last year, they received a call later that very day, with some very positive feedback. Now it’s a matter of waiting for the dust to settle at Disney before making a move.

“We haven’t [talked with Disney yet]. We’re kind of waiting for the smoke to clear,” he said. “But that’s one of my next big things to do. To kind of go over there and [get the ball rolling again].”

Despite the fact that Obsidian was in charge of two not so stellar sequels to two of the best RPG’s of our generation shouldn’t make this news bittersweet at all. Ever since EA and BioWare took The Old Republic into the MMO realm, gamers everywhere have been begging for Knights of the Old Republic III. This may be the closest thing to that yet.
