Peaception: What Sort Of Boyfriend Would Your Least Favourite Games Be?

Peaception: What Sort Of Boyfriend Would Your Least Favourite Games Be?

Disappointment. It’s something every gamer has experienced once, or twice, or thrice, or ten times when it comes to games not delivering on the promised or expected experience.

For me there have been some games that have been actually critically acclaimed that try as I might I just couldn’t see why. So if these games were a boyfriend, what sort of boyfriend would they be? Read on to find out.

Skyrim

The jack of all trades boyfriend:

I think most people are familiar with this guy. He does everything: part time musician, part time writer, part time poet who aspires to be an actor and enjoys playing rugby and a bit of golf in his spare time. After the initial awe of knowing someone who is involved in so much, you begin to realise after peeling all off those layers that there is not much of a personality in there.

Skyrim to me was a failure compared to Morrowind or Oblivion because I expected the game to be an improvement on The Elder Scrolls series. All I got was dragons, never ending mindless quests and a world filled with characters that had the facial features of someone recovering from meth addiction. If I ever wanted to know what it felt like to be a pimp, Skyrim satisfied that need for me with the pointless marriage option, were you can collect money from your beloved spouse on a daily basis. The main reason why I loathe this game is because I know Bethesda are capable of doing better but they won’t because the reliable formula of offering gamers a big world with lots to do but with very little heart in it has earned them awards. Nothing about the game was immersive, it was just a game with a lot to do but not much of a pay off at the end. Fus Ro Dah, more like Fus Roh Dumb.

Mass Effect 3

The long term boyfriend going through a mid-life crisis:

The reliable boyfriend who after reaching a milestone, suddenly changes. Now he wants to hang out with the younger crowd, dress and talk like them just so he looks cool. The only reason you are still with him is because you remember the old and reliable him who never cared much about fitting in and made you so happy but sooner or later you realise unless he catches a wakeup call your time with him is done because things are just not the same any more.

I love BioWare games, been a fan since Baldur’s Gate and when Mass Effect came out I was hooked. Don’t get me wrong, it had its faults both on a technical and gameplay level but I still loved it. With Mass Effect 2, I was still hooked and decided to overlook the short main story and annoying planet scans and enjoy the continuation of what was to me an EPIC story. Mass Effect 3 released and I was dumbstruck over why there were such glaring changes. Even though the MP didn’t detract from the singleplayer it was just not necessary and now I had 3 options in the way I played the game, either story mode were I just talk everyone to death or action mode where there is less talking and more killing and RPG mode which balances both combat and conversations. There was once a time when BioWare knew what sort of experience they wanted to give gamers. I long for those days and not confusing options.

Also Shepard and some of the old crew are gay and there is still not a huge impact or difference that your imported decisions from the previous games make. BioWare had a foolproof plan for Mass Effect 3: improve on the failings of the 2nd and just do what they do best, make awesome games. But they just had to try and please everyone and cater for a new audience. What happened to being unapologetic for your product? Bioware RPGs have never been action-oriented, the focus has been always on the story and the characters so why start changing now? It made no sense and when I played Mass Effect 3, I found I couldn’t finish the game because it wasn’t the game I fell in love with any more.

Red Dead Redemption

The old fashioned lovable boyfriend but you can’t stop thinking about his cousin:

He is reliable, trustworthy, honest, a gentleman and you are in a comfortable relationship with him. The only problem is you used to date his cousin before you met him and you can’t help but compare all the fun you had with his cousin and all the fun you are not having with him.

It’s my fault I had just come off a heavy GTA IV binge when I stated playing RDR, therefore comparing the two games is just plain stupid but I found myself doing just that. I struggled to connect to John or to even care about his mission. The characters I came across in the course of playing the game were forgettable and after accidentally shooting my horse (again) I asked myself, “What the hell am I doing with this game?” While roaming the west by my lonesome I actually found myself craving a radio even though I have to admit the song that played when I first arrived in Mexico was on another level of awesome. I can’t even point out faults in the game because it was a pretty good game but I just found it dull and not having found the motivation to actually continue playing it I just stopped and never completed the game. As the years have gone past I have had doubts on my initial reaction to the game and have decided to play it again but not now definitely. Soon though, and who knows, maybe my opinion of it might change.

Journey

The artsy fartsy boyfriend:

This is a special breed of boyfriend. He is into music you have never heard of, has read books that even Google can’t help you find and a general discussion with him is so complicated and convoluted that sometimes you need to do a mental check with yourself if he is actually speaking in a foreign language or if your brain is just too slow and not processing fast enough. You find yourself thinking he is a genius when actually he is not.

I hear people sharpening their pitchforks and thinking, “She had better not be referring to THE Journey,” yes I am referring to Journey, winner of GOTY from multiple gaming sites, and I still don’t get why? I played this game and I loved it and as soon as finished playing it I wanted to play it again. What I don’t get is the numerous praises this game has received. What’s mind-blowing about a robed silent guy with a penchant for scarves roaming the desert with one main goal of reaching this mystical faraway mountain? Most people will be like, “It’s the journey that’s important and not the goal,” and they would be right and the journey in itself is not special, except visually. It’s beautiful, you get some really sparkly sand and snow that looks really cold. Has Thatgamecompany packaged a conceptually simple game and tricked most gamers into thinking it’s something genius and special? Yes they did and kudos to them because it worked out. This is a good game that every gamer should at least try out when they need a break from the other faster paced games. It’s not ground-breaking, it’s just a simple game made out to be complex with hidden depths to it. Not worth all the hype it got in my opinion but still a good game to pass a few hours.

I feel the need to add this; this is my opinion and if any of the games I listed brought you joy then I’m happy for you and please redeem a free cookie from me.

    • Pea_Peralta

Lol im not upset i knew i would upset some fans by hating on popular games so feel free to rage i wont judge but i still thought the game was boring..:D

    • Trebzz

Controversy on your second article i expected that to come after number 10 at least :/ but look i agree on Skyrim and Journey i know a lot of people got orgasms for those 2 titles and i just never understood why.

    • Pea_Peralta

Lol Hashim okay will try and keep the controversial articles at a minimum..

    • AG_Sonday

No, if eGamer doesn’t maintain a minimum amount of controversy then chaos theorem dictates that the bipolar nature of the Earth’s magnetic field will be reversed thus upsetting tides and seasons and just about everything. Also the moon will collide with our planet.

      Basically, controversy ftw :D

  • wolftrap01

    nice article Pea ^_^

    • Pea_Peralta

      Thank you..:)

  • http://twitter.com/Clint1977 F34R_CS1977

Awesome article… It’s your opinion but I kinda share it… Not in the fact that I think of games as a guy but If i were to COD would be the kid that lifts and sleeps with moms but is also gay

    • Pea_Peralta

      Lol wait what Clint??O.O

  • CataclysmicDawn

You could connect with Mr. Belik (sp?) but not John Marston? D:

I think you have a thing for corny Russian accents.

    • CataclysmicDawn

Also, inb4 AG speaking with a corny Russian accent on the next podcast xD

    • Pea_Peralta

He doesnt need an accent he has that awesome head of hair..looks really wavy wonder what shampoo he uses..hmm..

    • Trebzz

If only he was 4 years older then you 2 could be together :P

    • CataclysmicDawn

      Wigs and toupés

    • AG_Sonday

I just wash it with emo tears and maybe a little Pantene :P
You can touch it at rAge :D

    • AG_Sonday

I don’t need accents which is convenient since I have the vocal control of an embarrassed teenager

    • Pea_Peralta

Lol i guess i do but im going to replay it again cause GTA 4 is out of my system..

    • CataclysmicDawn

It’s probably because Marston was married :P

    • Pea_Peralta

      Lol true as well..:(

  • http://egamer.co.za/author/cavie Caveshen “CaViE” Rajman

You had me at Journey is overrated.

    • Trebzz

Yeah screw Journey it can burn in a hole and i wasted money on it :/

    • Adam Meikle

      Walking Dead is better. Seriously.

    • Trebzz

Not sure if you are trolling or being serious… But yes Walking Dead was amazing and i loved it and still love it :D

    • Adam Meikle

Seriously, Walking Dead is a better game than Journey. I even felt that Borderlands 2 was a better game than Journey.

    • Trebzz

Well 2 different games but i see what you doing here lol

    • Adam Meikle

Art games are okay with me to a point. But when they are jettisoned to heights of martyrdom for the whole games as art movement, and one game becomes the hero of gaming. Then I feel that people are idolising one game way too much. It easily becomes overrated in my books, because expectations are so high. My expectations were definitely not met with Journey.

    • http://egamer.co.za/ Azhar Amien

Adam, while it’s fine if you think Journey is overrated (seriously hate that word, gets used for everything these days), comparing it to The Walking Dead and Borderlands 2 is absurd. That’s like saying Call of Duty is a better game than Rayman: Origins.

    • Adam Meikle

Azhar, this is what taste culture is about. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taste_(sociology). Ironically, some people will think Call of Duty is a better game than Rayman: Origins, because it all comes down to personal preference, and the taste culture that the individual grows up in. But to be truthful, for me on many levels, The Walking Dead was a far more involved experience than Journey. Again, this is from my perspective.

For others, like yourself, this is different because Journey suits your tastes, more so than my own. There is no way to objectively say a game is better than another game, because of the relative subjectivity involved in playing games. We hope that we can objectively say something is better than something else. But the reality is that objectivity is a farce we try to perpetuate, and an ideal we try to pursue. Of course, we can be fair with our assessments of a game, but our own tastes and bias will always reflect in what we think about games, what we play and what we write.

    • http://egamer.co.za/ Azhar Amien

Yes I know many people do that, but it’s silly and makes very little sense comparatively. I can also say that I like The Walking Dead more than Borderlands 2 (which I do) but it’s apples and oranges when it comes to which is better. You can easily say you prefer one over the other, but to me saying The Avengers is better than Pulp Fiction is senseless.

So, you should be saying you prefer those games over Journey or like them more, but calling them better games is strange in my opinion.

    • Adam Meikle

Actually, a game can be ‘better’ for you than another game :P. But I digress. This argument leads into senseless rhetoric with no justifiable end. I don’t want this to turn into a 4chan, or Youtube, comments thread.

    • http://egamer.co.za/ Azhar Amien

Fair enough, but “Actually, a game can be ‘better’ for you than another game :P”

Not the point I was making -_-

    • Adam Meikle

Let’s just agree to disagree :D.

    • Yashaar Mall

      ADAM UR IS SEXCI

    • Adam Meikle

      Damn straight!

    • AG_Sonday

I don’t think Journey is overrated, I think it’s just a game that isn’t for everybody. Some will think it’s good, some will love it, some will hate it and Alessandro will construct a shrine to the holy magical scarf :P

    • Adam Meikle

Like I said, it all comes down to subjective opinion. My opinion of Journey is just as valid as those who proclaim it to be an “amazing” game.

    • Adam Meikle

Sorry, I didn’t realise you were referring to Cavie. Stupid comment wouldn’t delete.

    • Alessandro Barbosa

So it was written on the ancient magical scarf…and on the eighth day it was done :D

    • AG_Sonday

Seriously that’s it? Bigger letdown than the twist ending of the Bible

    • Alessandro Barbosa

Fuck Cavie you just had to start this shit again didn’t you :P

    • http://egamer.co.za/author/cavie Caveshen “CaViE” Rajman

      <3

  • http://www.lomag.co.za/ NeoN

I’ve recently started Assassin’s Creed 3 and I’m finding it to be some of the worst gaming I’ve experienced in forever. T_T I’m not that far in, still running around in trees as teenage Connor and it’s not been fun up to this point, to say the least. Really hope things pick up sooner rather than later.

    • Pea_Peralta

I loved the indian chant when you are roaming in the woods as a young Connor but after playing Far Cry 3 i cant even continue with AC3 because FC3 nailed having various activities in the open world actually mean something in the progression of the story..

    • AG_Sonday

Far Cry 3 just served to prove how shit AC 3 is which is quite funny on Ubisoft’s part

    • http://www.lomag.co.za/ NeoN

Yeah, that Indian chant was pretty rocking. lol.

    • http://egamer.co.za/ Azhar Amien

NeoN I think I love you :P But yeah, bad news bro is that it takes 6-7 hours before you get the Assassins uniform, and another 2-3 hours before you get your first epic mission (around 8-9 hours in). Campaign is around 13 hours long (excluding side missions). Really hated AC3, was one of the most underwhelming and boring games I’ve played.

    • http://www.lomag.co.za/ NeoN

Wow dude, that sounds horrible. I’m currently getting in about 2 hours of AC3 a week, forcing myself on weekends to progress through the campaign. X_x

    • http://egamer.co.za/ Azhar Amien

Yeah, when you get the assassin’s uniform, it will show that you’ve completed 38-40% of the game :P Still a few more slow missions and tutorials after that though.

The funniest part about AC3 for me though was that the naval missions were the best part of the gameplay, yet they had nothing to do with being an assassin :P I feel your pain though NeoN. I know many people loved the game, but I really had to force myself through it as well. It was such an effort.

  • Gamer

Seriously? If you can compare a boyfriend with a game then my dear I have news for you…. you never had a real man in your life. The games you listed to compare with is irrational, you can never compare GTA and RDR ever, yes it has the free roam but that is all that is has in common. If you can say you know enough about games to wright a article about it, go back to the playground and make friends in the sand pit.

    • Pea_Peralta

Thats why i stated that it was stupid to compare the 2 games and you are right Ive never had a real man in my life and i will definitely go back to the playground and make friends in the sandpit, thank you for the feedback..:)

    • http://egamer.co.za/ Azhar Amien

      Two things for you:

      1) Obviously it’s not a real comparison between games and boyfriends, it’s tongue in cheek writing. Ever heard of it? Probably not since you took it literally.

      2) What’s wrong with comparing GTA and RDR? Same developers, same genre, same style of game, similar gameplay, same mechanics and heck even the same engine (RAGE and Euphoria). If that doesn’t constitute games that can be compared, then I don’t know what does hey.

  • AG_Sonday

Another great article, this was one was probably more fun especially since I might fall into the RDR category minus the cousin bit :P

    • Pea_Peralta

      Lol thanks AG

  • Alessandro Barbosa

OMG Peloma…I finally have someone on this website that agrees with me on Skyrim. I thought it was an absolute waste of time, and I still can’t believe it won over The Witcher 2 in terms of GOTY awards.

    Thank you…just thank you :D

    • http://egamer.co.za Dean Oberholzer

      ‘Scuse me?

      I’m quite sure…

Oh never mind. You don’t listen anyway!

    • AG_Sonday

Leave it Dean, Barbosa’s got his gameface on :P

    • Pea_Peralta

      Yep horrribleeee game is horrible

  • Richard Dubbeld

RDR is WAAAAY better than GTA IV. The story was better, it wasn’t just you being a criminal. the setting was better, i got so tired of Liberty City’s homogeneous landscape. In fact GTA IV was just boring overall compared to RDR. And no, the “quirky” characters in GTA were just facepalm worthy.

  • Richard Dubbeld

with all this shite-storm in the comments, i sometimes wonder if it ever is a good idea to express one’s opinions…
