This Week In Indie: Race The Sun, At The Gates And Death Inc
This week sees a treasure trove of indie titles surfacing with some very exciting developments on the horizon particularly with Death Inc. This year is an exciting time for indie games and it’s a real pleasure to come across so many interesting and amazing developments in this sector of the game industry. As we always do, let’s go on with the show.
Have you ever wanted to relive the good old days of Bullfrog where RTS and god sims actually had humour and great style to top it all of, well this may be your answer. Death Inc., the brain child of Ambient Studios, is here to satisfy your hunger and in the game you play as the Grim Reaper whose job it is to spread the plague, except that in this scenario the Grim Reaper is more of a businessman and a RTS boffin. This is how Ambient Studios described the game:
Death Inc. is not your typical strategy game. It’s a unique mix of real-time strategy, god game and business sim, harking back to some of the classic Bullfrog games like Theme Park and Dungeon Keeper. Simply paint your orders into the world and unleash your infected minions on serfs, wenches and noblemen. Every human that falls will join the ranks of your pestilential horde.
The game is set in the 1660s at the height of the Bubonic Plague, which you help spread as the Grim Reaper commanding the undead hordes. Essentially the “world is your canvas” and with the intriguing paintbrush mechanic utilised in the game, Death Inc. is looking like an amazing indie game.
So you’re one of those gamers who enjoyed Civ 5 and are looking for your next great empire building experience to pass the time. Well At The Gates by Jon Schafer might be right up your alley. The game is set during the collapse of the Roman Empire and you lead a barbarian kingdom which has set out to conquer the vacuum of power left in the wake of the collapse of the Roman Empire. However, rival kingdoms stand in your way and the Romans are still formidable enemies. This is what Jon Schafer had to say about the game:
At the Gates is an empire builder similar to Sid Meier’s Civilization. Starting with a small tribe, you must explore the world, exploit its scarce resources, and eliminate or outsmart potential enemies. The game starts simple but grows in complexity until you command a mighty economic and military powerhouse.
The game itself looks like it will be everything a Civilisation fan would want out of an empire builder such as this. So if you’re into these types of games, I suggest you keep on the look out for when this indie gem is released.
The final game we’ll be looking at this week is called Race The Sun. The game is inspired by the jet action in the original Star Fox on the Nintendo 64. Race The Sun has you play as a solar powered craft navigating an infinite landscape that is constantly changing. You have to try and survive as long as possible before running out of energy, or crashing into an obstacle. The game will also have a co-op multiplayer component and currently has a playable alpha demo, which can be played through their Kickstarter page. This game will have a set of mod tools included, which means endless possibilities for the intrepid gamer.
Well that’s it for this Week In Indie. It’s nearly the weekend and as always remember to keep it real and indie. We hope you have a great weekend.
