eGamer Rating:

Addictive: Yes if you’re into Guitar Hero and Rock. No if you’re tired of the Guitar Hero, as it’s not vastly different from previous games
Worth The Time: Yes

Things Loved: The new tracks, the slight change in hitting notes being slightly more forgiving, and a little more like Guitar Hero 3. Oh and Casey Lynch’s outfit
Things Hated: No new features, and having to pay to import tracks from other games

Reasons To Buy/Not Buy: Definitely one of the better options in the series as Neversoft/Activision seemed to lose the plot with Guitar Hero 5 and Band Hero. While there is nothing new and one could argue the Guitar Hero genre has been overdone, it’s definitely worth the buy if you’re looking for some new tracks to play and intend to play it multiplayer

Quick Conclusion: Worth playing through and always good to have on the shelf when friends come over

Name: Guitar Hero – Warriors of Rock (GH: WoR or GH6)
Genre: Music/Rhythm
Players: 1-8
Multiplayer: Yes
Platforms: PS3, Xbox 360, Wii (and possibly PC if Aspyr get their ass in gear)
Developer: Neversoft
Publisher: Activision
Price: R400-R1799 (depending on accessories)

I’m reviewing the new Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock and after a good few solid hours of kicking ass at lead guitar, I have lost 90% of the movement functions in my hands and wrists. But I’ll give the review a bash, so here goes…

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last five years, I’m sure you’ve heard of Guitar Hero. It’s a rhythm based game where the object of the game is to press the correct keys (or notes if you will) in time with the music. And instead of using the usual Wii/PS2/PS3/Xbox controller you get to use a guitar shaped controller. Pretty simple concept but it’s loads of fun.

Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock is the 9th game in the series for PS3, although it’s more of a sequel to Legends of Rock as the franchise has gone back to its roots, focusing more on rock/metal music and songs with epic riffs as opposed to the Taylor Swift type crap we saw in Band Hero and GH 5. It’s 1-4 players in your lounge and 1-8 player if you hit the interwebz.

Taylor Swift from Band Hero - Awesome if she'd shut her mouth and wear some skintight leather

The graphics are pretty good and have definitely come a long way since Guitar Hero 3. However it’s really the audio/music we’re interested in here.

The set list is pretty awesome with some good old school tracks as well as some new tracks. And even better, there is no hipity hopity crap or Teen Pop. Loads of DLC songs should be available, so you’ll be spoiled for choice.

There are 4 Game Modes, Quickplay+, Quest mode, Competitive and Party Play.

Quest Mode

Lots of emphasis has been put into quest mode. In the previous guitar hero games, there was a bit of a story line; you’d choose a character, you’d play a few songs at a few different venues and bam game over. With Warriors of Rock you get the chance to play 8 different characters, each with their own set list and each earning their own powers. I’m not really one for storylines, so in a nutshell here goes: The story involves the Demi-god of Rock who is about to get smashed by some sort of transformer robot called Beast, and with your 8 characters you need to power his ax-guitar in order for him to smash the transformer Beast instead. Or something like that.

Quickplay+

This is what it’s all about. Creating a list of your favourite tracks and letting rip. One of the better features included since GH5 is the ability for multiple people to play the same instrument. So, if all four players want to rock lead guitar, assuming you have enough guitars, you can all play lead guitar. Or you can play as a full band with a Lead Guitar, Bass, Drums and Vocals.

Competitive

One of the most fun modes if you have enough controllers and enough players. There are a number of modes mostly all carried over from GH 5. There is the usual face-off, Steakers, Momentum, Perfectionist, and a few others.

Party Play

The simplest of all 3 modes, Party Play cycles through songs at random and allows you to jump in mid way through a song and leave again if you so desire. I’m guessing the idea is to throw a party and let randomz walk up and just jam or something.

Casey Lynch

Other Features

As with most of the last few GH games, Warriors of Rock has GH Studio/Tunes where you can create and download custom made tracks. There is also the option to create your own character, if for some reason there is something wrong with you and you don’t want to be the super hot Casey Lynch.

And if you’re hooked into the PlayStation Network there are also a host of downloadable tracks you can get. As at time of writing there didn’t appear to be much to download but we’ll keep you posted with any new track packs that come out.

Really, if you like rock music then this is what you need. And if you’re looking to get started in the GH franchise, or if you’re a GH fan, then this one to get. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert you’ll find a skill level that works for you. The biggest problem I’ve found is that the controllers tend to be cheaply made and are poor quality. Or maybe I just rock too hard and keep breaking them. Nothing to do with the game though.

Note: Before complaining to my editor about the title picture, if you look closely you will notice a guitar.

It’s Monday (no make that Wednesday, thanks Eishkom) and I’ve had the 2nd most awesome news of the day! The 1st most awesome news involves a certain editor in chief’s mom and… oh wait I can’t print that here. The 2nd bit of awesome news is Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock will ship in a month’s time!

Now now I know what you’re thinking. It’s another guitar hero with more rubbish tracks like Band Hero. But it isn’t! Not one tiny bit! The folk at Activision have seen the light and given Taylor Swift a bit of Kanye West. Something like:

“Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you, but I’m not going to let you finish because no one wants to play your songs… “

GH: Warriors of Rock is bringing the Rock back (Ed: Thank you Captain Obvious we can all read the name of the game). The full track list has finally been released and well some of those songs make me want to touch myself on my studio they’re so fucking kickass.

You’ve got some classics to jam to like:

What’s that? You want more Taylor Swift? Well then I’ve got bad news for you and of Taylor’s biggest fan dean0…

Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock is coming and this time there isn’t going to be any of the pop princess rubbish we’ve seen since Guitar Hero 5 and Band Hero. Our friends from Activision (Read: Neversoft and RedOctane) have learnt their lesson from poor sales of the last few title releases and have gone back to their roots, that is this time it’s all shedding to Rock.

So you could almost say that GH: Warriors of Rock will be a sequel to GH: Legends of Rock. Most of the features from GH: 5 have been incorporated, but lets be honest, we only care about what we’ll be jamming to…

And here’s a little taste:

Back in the day when I was jamming the 8bit Nintendo, we used to clock games. Now for those of you who don’t know what clock or clocked means:

Clocked: To completely smash a video game. Meaning you get perfect scores and without losing a single life.

Have you ever clocked a game? Being quite rubbish games (Ed: Amen), it’s hard to think of a game that I’ve totally demolished. Then I remembered why I haven’t… I always used the Konami kode.

So tell us about about games you’ve panked any game really hard. And remember we’re not talking about just finished, we’re talking about finished in style with no deaths. One of my favourites is the video of some guy (prolly azn) finishing Quake 1 in 12 minutes. Check it out here.

Warning: All Internet Tough Guys should skip this question of the day as it will not apply to them.

Ok so the day somehow managed to elude me. It’s now Tuesday night which I guess kinda makes this question of the night. Now I don’t mind being the office this late, as I’m a bit of a creature of the night. Now I’m not one who is afraid of the dark but it does help that our office is well lit. Why am I talking about the night? Well this is when most of my gaming is done of course. These days it consists of 2am drunk dota with Emo Nik, Cheeezy and Nitrate on a Friday or whining in an instagib with some asian or again Nitrate on Quakelive. Where am I going with this? Well before dota became my mistress I did play other games. One night a mate and myself decide to play some PS1 Resident Evil. At Night. With the lights out (Ed: This sounds like the beginning of a Mills and Boon?) and the sound up. Well… I forget what colour my underpants were at the start of that day, but after that night they were brown.

Yeah I flat out brownstriped my pants every time some crazy mofo would pop and and attack me. Seriously for a kiddie back then that game was epic scary. We played until the sun came up until we got stuck some where and decided breakfast > resident evil. While I have to say the likes of Doom 3 and such were up there with the scariest, playing Resident Evil 1 till down has still got to be one of the “scariest” gaming experiences I’ve ever had.

Tell us about yours!

No I haven’t gone barking mad. Although as I write this piece, my editor is giving me the beady eye. Yes I too have succumbed to the madness that is Starcraft II. Having been a huge fan of the first Starcraft, I spent many hours with my forces backed into a corner defending waves and waves of AI or battling random people on the interwebz (known as the Internet back then). And of course no LAN was complete without the 6 hour Mexican stand-off of battle cruisers against carries.

What got me thinking about Starcraft II, the 2009 winner of the vapourware award? Wait… let me lift that rock you’ve been living under. THE STARCRAFT BETA INVITES WERE SENT OUT DUMMY! Wait what you didn’t sign up? Idiot. Well I did sign up, but unfortunately our friends @ blizzard don’t think Fatbob is a worthy beta tester. So as a consolation prize, I’ve been you tubing reviews. While waiting of course for that little red bar to buffer, I started wondering what it would be like if the future turned out to be something like Starcraft.

Let’s say I pull a Phillip J Fry and land myself in a cryogenic chamber one day while delivering pizzas. And it just so happens they set the date to Feb 20, 2610. Would I want to be a marine with the life expectancy of 8 seconds? Or perhaps a hydralisk related to the fungus growing under Nitrate’s bed? And who wouldn’t want to be zealot (Ed: pronounced Zeeeeeelot boo) and give out some psy blades to the face?

Dead honest Fatbob can’t decide for once.

P.S. For you guys that take 30 seconds to load @ the start of each dota (hint hint Bedlamp) here’s what you’ll need to run Starcraft II – check here

Finally… Yeah this one has been in the works for a while now. There has been a lot of buzz around a league being setup by the “new” Twilight team and after much debate/procrastinating/stalling we’re ready to kick off season 1. And for those of you who have no clue what league we’re referring to, it’s a full on 5v5 clan based Dota league.

Details, you demand details! The basic format will be a round robin where a team plays every other team in their division. Division? Yeah that’s right. Depending on the amount of signups we get, the idea is to have divisions of 8 teams. This allows us to keep the groups managable as well as group teams together that are more or less on the same skill level. As it stands we’ve currently stands, we’ve had 8 teams sign up. Here are some the teams you can look forward to (Ed: Or dread) doing battle with:

TwG – Token White Guy
A fairly newly formed team from what I can gather with some big hitters. With Mint’s dota team disbanding Waz_Mac and AsSsMan (Ed: That’s MrAsSsMan to you) have joined up with Vsdgkk and doppl3R to form TwG. I recon they’re going to show some of the more established teams a thing or two.

S0NA – Spacefreaks 0N Acid
This has to be one of the most fun teams I’ve clannied against. Good spirit and not afraid to try something different. Expect a good game from these guys.

dedA – Dedicated Abuse
Or should I say, the new dedA. dedA along with TwG decided to snatch up a few miNt players and have now added sLoJ and Lemon-Grass to their line up. Definitely favourites for this season, no matter who signs up.

ExP – Extra Pulling
Exp should also be an interesting team to watch. While I’ve never seen them play before as a team, there are a few better than average players in their squad. With the likes of Fluro, Visrucis (Ed: Imba viper is imba), CuriousGeorge and Xylon who is incidently back after his cry thread about leaving cos he didn’t make gayHL2, ExP should make for a good competitive team.

DuC – DUCoRe
A fairly old team I remember seeing in the Agasa cup back in the day. Having played against them in the UCL and getting a solid ass kicking, I’d expect to see them fighting for a top 4 spot as they’ve been playing together for quite a while and have some great synergy.

Borg
Another team that has been around for some time, borg’s lineup has changed slightly however they’re still one of the stronger sides that have signed up. Expect some good games from these guys.

We haven’t done any sort of division placing yet as we’re expecting a few more registrations. However whether your team be n00b or pro you should find yourself in a fairly evenly matched league. Registrations close on the 26th February, so time is running out. For more information on the rules and format, check out the twilight forum.

Editors Warning: This QOTD is a tad more serious than the usual nonsense Fatbob comes up with.

It’s been a busy day here @ the eGamer offices as we’re locked away working on a top secret project. How top secret you ask? Well so top secret I don’t think any of us know what it is. It’s been an interesting day for those of you with feelers out in the ADSL and Connectivity market. A day that most thought would revolutionise the ADSL market has well… let’s just say it hasn’t quite done so.

But yes today the folk over at Web Africa announced their new pricing structure now that it’s a tier 1 ISP. The bad news is that it’s not exactly the “Aggressive Pricing” we’d all heard so much about. Why do I care? Well I’m a gamer and gaming eats my bandwidth. Of course downloads, surfing and pr0n eat my bandwidth too, but I’m not going to get into that.

I’ve been a long time WA subscriber and one stage good ol’ eGamer was hosted with them (Ed: You’re not going to rant about that again are you?) and I really thought they were tip top. After some hosting issues and today’s announcement WA has made both me and my wallet very sad. Yes WA if I continue to buy my international bandwidth from you next month, I will save about R5. Yes a whole R5. After I’ve paid Sally for services rendered, what on earth am I going to do with R4.90 change?

Anyway before this turns into the 500 post rant that’s currently going on at MyBB, I figured it would be interesting to see what the folk around the office use for their interwebz fix:

Nitrate: A few IS local accounts and Afrihost for the international.

Bedlamp: 30GB local from IS, Openweb 5Gb for International

Slobber: Do broadband level 3 for local, Webafrica Afrihost for International 5GB give or take.

Saidin: 2 x IS local, 1 x 10GB Mweb

Cheeezy: Hacked accounts or Slobber’s.

Russ: 5GB Mweb (mommy and daddy bought

Tody: 6GB though IS

Nitricity: Tel Shuddup Jenson!

So guys if you’re happy with WA or you’re looking to get into the market as they’ve got some nice comprehensive line + Bandwidth offers. However if you’re on a tight budget, or you’ve been buggered one too many times by Telkom, it’s time to check out openweb, Afrihost, gconnect or one of the others. If you have no clue what I’m talking about, check out Web Africa’s new pricing here.

FB Out!

P.S. The views expressed in this article are my own and do not in any way reflect the views of the lovely people here at eGamer, their moms, Phant1m the guy that cleans the office, their hosting providers or anyone else for that matter other than Fatbob

Hello gentle readers. Today’s a bit of a short one but is still a fairly important question. These days SFX is considered to very important in the gaming world. But there is another element that sometimes goes unoticed. Yeah that’s right the soundtrack. While quite acknowledged in the movie world, in the gaming world it isn’t really taken notice off.

So today we’re going to keep it simple, as you’ve all got a mindless Friday game to be playing. What’s your favourite gaming soundtrack? Mine of course is obvious. It’s the kick ass NIN + others that was part of Quake II. Nothing beats storming the multiple leavers pumping rockets and slugs into all the baddies while you make your way to Makron that uber boss guy at the end. In fact, I think I’ve still got the opening track on an MP3 CD. I think I might just give it a listen.

If the Haitian (the black guy that makes you forget shit) from the TV show heroes was real, and gave you the opportunity to erase any single game from your memory so you could play it from the beginning again, what game would you choose?

It may seem like an odd question, but some games are AWESOME the first time you play them but that’s that. Kinda like any M. Night Shyamalan movie (Ed: The guy who made the movie about the kid who sees dead people). It just isn’t as good the 2nd time around. After much pondering… I’m going to have to go oldish school. The most awesome game ever that I want a do over on is… Baulders Gate 1.

Pure Awesomeness!

Why you ask? I just really enjoyed the story line and running between the north and south and getting all sorts of folk to join my party. Although I have very little knowledge about any RPG involving rolling/dice etc, it was still a really good. I did the good path as trying to be bad just didn’t work out when you went north (some wizard guy would rock up and give you a fireball in the beak). And of course you had Imoen who was a super babe and that Minsk oke who’s pet mouse boo was unstable/unstoppable (kinda like the real boo :D). But yeah that would be my do over.

It was a fairly quiet weekend for me this weekend (Ed: Broke thanks to a trip to a very Grand place?) and I spent most of it at home. Of course this isn’t entirely a bad thing as it means lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of dota. I probably squeezed a good 10/12 games in this weekend which is by no means a record but it was quite a few. This got me thinking as to what’s the longest stint I’ve ever done while gaming…

To be dead honest I can’t remember as there have been many long gaming stints, but it would have to be at a lan. One of the many dota marathons we did at Mayhem for about 20 hours or possibly a full weekend of Diablo 2 where Ubertaner, Fantini and myself figured we could finish the game in a weekend (Bad news, we didn’t thanks to someones crap Barbarian! Oh wait that was me). So I’d say the most for me is probably a 20-25 hour set of non stop gaming excluding bathroom and pudding cup breaks.

Keeping it simple and sweet as it’s already past 7pm and the other editors are banging on my door I was wondering WTF QOTD is I decided not to ask the rest of the office, but go ahead and tell us what your longest gaming stint has been.

It’s official! Game developers have run out of ideas and are now turning to TV shows for inspiration. Don’t believe me? (Ed: No one ever believes you…) Just look at many of the new titles out. There are various CSI games, various Law & Order games, an E.R. game and even a Grey’s Anatomy (Pronounced Gay’s Anatomy) game out. And of course let’s not forget Nitrate’s 2nd favourite game to fap to, Project Runway (his favourite being Playboy: the mansion). True story.

Now all of the above are pretty average in my opinion, so it’s up to you out there to make some better suggestions as to what TV Series Game Developers should use for inspiration. As per usual I took a waddle around the eGamer offices to see what the creative geniuses in our employ had to say…

daekinHO: Scrubs – Because he wants to be a chocolate bear.

Blade/Russbuss: Dexter – Cos he would get to kill **** and then cover it up and act innocent

Slobber: Friends – So he could get to do “The one with the b00bies”

Tody: I didn’t actually bother asking Tody as he would have just said Batman the animated series anyway.

Emo Nik: Human Target – Its cheesy, action packed and has brad chase from boston legal.

Ubertaner: Twilight Zone – Cos anything can happen!

Nitricity: Des Shuddup Jenson!

Myself, I’m going with Burn Notice. Getting to be Michael Western would be awesome! You’d get to do cool spy stuff, blow shit up and still have to find time to visit your mom.

It’s Januworry for most people (Ed: my cousin Simon thinks it’s November 1985) and one of the big things about Januworry is that most people’s budget are tight after the festive season. And what do us gamers do when we’re a bit tight on cash? Well we stay home and game of course. So whether it be dota, cod, checkers, solitaire, project runway, omgpop etc what we’re after is to find out how much time you spend gaming on any average week day.

Unfortunatly I can’t tell you much about the eGamer team in this regard, as Nitrate has them off on a secret project a.k.a. Popcap draw my thingy.

I’m probably a bit of a game-a-holic myself, as I do about 5 hours every weekday and probably about 10 hours over the weekend. Whether it be Guitar Hero on a projector screen (Brad we’ve got to do that again this weekend) or stacking Dota pubs with super carry (who I’m also nominating for doosh of the month), how much time do you spend gaming?

FB Out!

P.s. On a side note if you haven’t tried draw my thing check it out, it’s fuc pretty damn awesome! I recommend being on TS while playing for extra laughs.

FB Out again!

Okay so back in the 80s and early 90s when most of you were barely a twinkle in your parent’s eyes, the best you could get out a console was pong. Now don’t get me wrong, pong is awesome (Pong Kombat anyone?) however it gets a little old after a while. First you beat the white bar, then the red bar, then the blue bar, the green bar, then the black (invisible) bar, then the flashing bar etc. So the youth of those times had to find other mind numbing ways to entertain themselves.

Enter the Coin Operated Arcade Machine! Yeah there was nothing like a trip down to your local video arcade to hit the local fighting game circuit and bash some faces in playing Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat or Fatal Fury. Of course you had all the classics like space invaders, 1942, Super Sidekicks, Bubble Bobble and let’s not forget the ever sexy Ms. Pacman (a totally different game to Pacman). I always did wonder if Pacman was the illegitimate son of Ms. Pacman but I digress.

For those of you that have spent some time at your local arcade or remember the days when your local Cafe had an Upright Arcade Machine or two, we’re looking to hear what your favourite is. Myself I’ve got to go with either Sunset Riders (Ed: Billy FTW) or perhaps the best pr0n game ever Gals Panic. Yeah those were the days when you could see nudity while play… oh wait Tody might read this.

Pictured: Nitrate in his Pedo getup!

Being a Friday most of the office was out on a long lunch, but here is what a few of the fellows had to say:

Nitrate: Street Fighter 2. Based on the fact that he didn’t know if it was “World Warrior” or “Championship Edition “ I figure he was too cheap to actually play it.

Emo Nik: Peggle Extreme

phANT1m: Had no idea what I was talking about as he’s way too young to know what an Arcade Machine is

Slobber: Mk II as 50c could keep you entertained for hours as long as the AZNs didn’t show up.

sereNity: Air Hockey. I’m not going to comment on this as Grumpy may bant me.

Mark: Airwolf. A scrolling platform game with Doo-Dillidi-Doo-Dillidi-Doo-Dillidi-Dum-Di-Dum-Dum-Dum playing over and over.

Blade: Contra although I suspect without the Konami code he probably pumped about R20 into this just to finish it

*Disclaimer: Tool of destruction refers to a mouse, not what’s in your pants.

Now that we’ve got that out they way, yeah today we’re talking about what mouse you use for handing out punishment in the gaming world. Whether it be a FPS, RPG, RTS or card game we want to know what mouse you use and what mouse you’ve found to be the best for the task. Why do I want to know? Well as you may have read in yesterday’s QOTD, I have some pretty ambitious goals and my current mouse is just fail.

As I’m officially back at the office today and no longer hiding in my cubicle, I figured I’d do my usual waddle around the office and see what my colleagues had to say:

Nitrate: Logitec MX518 and based on his Instagib, he is the point and click champion

saidin: A wireless Logitec G7. It’s important to note that some fanboi bought his MX518 and framed it cos it will be worth something someday

phANT1m: Logitec G5

Bukris: Some no name brand. (Ed: The way he plays dota I suspect he uses a touchpad)

Russ: Verbatim Rapier V2. While I’m in the market for a new mouse, I don’t think I’m going to trust a company that makes sticky tape

Tody: After arguing for some time that a PS3 controller does not count, Little Buddy admitted to having an MX518

Serpent: I have no clue who this is, but he has a Razor Death Adder

Slobber: Razor Copperhead in green that glows in the dark. That’s about all it does

Nitricity: Mx Shuddup Jenson!

So today the boss walks into my office and pushes my feet off the desk. Apparently I was supposed to start up QOTD as of Monday. My bad! Anyway I hope you’ve all had a good jolly over the jolly season, and now that you’re jolly, you’re ready for the jolly New Year. As we’re kicking off a new year I’m obliged to ask the obvious question; what’s your new year’s resolution. Now I’m sure most of you have already broken yours (Ed: It was just one smoke!), but here is your chance to start afresh. With a gaming twist ofc!

Myself I haven’t quite decided what my Gaming New Years resolution is. On the one hand I want to see my Dota Clan pwn in the UCL and Twilight league but I’ve been told I’m dreaming. I also want to get into QuakeLive a little more so I’m good enough to pank Ph4nt0m, but again I’ve been told I’m dreaming. Thus I think for now I’ll just stick to getting a new mouse that works and getting in some more practise.

Watch out JJ and Ph4nt0m!

FB Out!

And yes I’m feeling Jolly!

IT’S THE WEEKEND!!! Which means three things: 1. Drinking and hopefully some rejection action from under-dressed gurls. 2. It also means drunk 3am Dota. 3. My leave starts which means I can get down to some SRS gaming. And by SRS gaming I mean Dota, Dota, Dota, Dota, GH, Dota, Dota, QuakeLive, Dota. You kinda get the picture. (Ed: Yeah the world’s most fussy gamer only plays 3 games)

While having a look at some of the cool stuff Little Buddy a.k.a. Tody has been writing, it dawned on me that maybe I should try something new. This got me thinking that there are a whole host of awesome games that I have never really played. At the moment Boo is trying to convince me to play Mass Effect, but that’s a whole other issue. So this weekend I’ve decided I’m going to play something old. As I can’t really think of anything, I decided to waddle around the office and see what my colleagues @ the eGamer offices had wanted to play but never did:

Nitrate: UFC 2009 Undisputed – He never played it because he was just too lazy (Ed: Read cheap) to buy it

hamstaDAWG: Team Fotress 2 – because steam is <censored>

Slobber: NBA JAM T.E. for Sega Genisis because it had the most epic secret players ever!

phANT1m: Spore as in every review he’s read it apparently has been rated as stupid and the DRM was just bad. However I have it on good authority that when it said “Press any key to install” phANT1m couldn’t find the any key. *grin*

SHopRite_Packet: Hello Kitty island adventure. He never tried it because his sister would pwn him if he did

DaekinHO: The Sims because he was too busy with real life?

alcardu: Wow because he doesn’t believe in reincarnation

Blink: Pokemon – I didn’t bother for asking for a reason

Nitricity: Well Shuddup Jenson!

Well I don’t want to try any of that nonsense because it doesn’t contain any sort of nudity. Thanks for nothing.

It’s the season to be jolly apparently and the eGamer office is buzzing with Christmas cheer (Ed: Or the fact we can get away from Nitrate a.k.a. Scrooge). Of course this is a very commercial time of year and it’s all about buying receiving presents. Having an office full of geeks gamers pretty much means that everyone is going to want some game that is just out or about to come out.

Therefore, today’s question was quite simple: What game would you life to have stuffed in your stocking/gstring this Christmas?

In case you’ve got a secret crush in the eGamer office, here is what we want:

Nitrate: UFC 2010 obviously. Of course he is going to be upset when he doesn’t get it cos it’s not out yet.

Tody is currently away at some sort of KFC protest about the double crunch, but I suspect probably Batman 2 or some other spandex wearing game.

Blade: Pokemon Diamond with an accompanying Nintendo DS. Bear in mind, he is 12 years old.

Chiron: A legal copy of War 3.

Slobber: GH: Van Halen but without the rubbish Van Halen songs.

phANT1m: Modern Warfare 2.

Nitricity: The new Shuddup Jenson!

So back when I was a Wii lad (Ed: Wee lad you idiot) this awesome movie came out about a crazy scientist guy who built a car that if you drive 141Km per hour, flick some dials and charge your flux capacitor you could travel through time. Of course the time travel plot has been overdone but it was still a pretty cool movie.

So it got me thinking of all the things I would go back and change. A certain gurl I would have never crossed paths with or maybe that one time I would have had one drink less or OH WAIT!!! Yes I would go back in time and not buy Barbie II: Miami Vacation. Now before you say WTF I was 12 and I figured you’d get to see Barbie boobs when choosing different outfits for her. Turns out you didn’t and I’m still quite acid about it. Anyway while you all point and laugh I’m going to switch the question back to you.

So if Doc Brown came back from the future and offered to send you back in time to stop you from buying a game, what game would it be?

Here is what the residents @ the eGamer office (and other random tits) had to say:

Emo Nik: Hellgate London: He had a host of reasons but cut himself before I could get any of them out of him

phANT1m: Bourne Conspiracy on the Xbox as he wasted so much time on a mindless boring repetitive game

Nitrate: Was in some sort of meeting with Storm (Ed: If the office door is a rocking don’t come a knocking) but he’d prolly say he’s never bought a game and therefore has no regrets

Tody: Enemy Territory: Quake Wars for PC because no one played it online and I quote “I was liek “I’m all alone, \:O/ haalp!!!“”

Slobber: Overlord because I couldn’t run it on my 386 and when I finally got a 486 and a stiffy drive to play it, it turned out to be putty

alcardu: The Sims cos it taught him that he’s a bad at being an architect and also because he had a mediocre job, would constantly miss the taxi to work and end up sitting around the house in his underpants eating cereal.

DaekinHO: Battlefield 2142 all hype and fail gameplay/graphics/everything

Nitricity: Qua Shuddup Jenson!

FB Out!

Shout out to blade! :D~

So this weekend saw the biggest award show of 2009 take place and if you’re thinking “but the Oscars weren’t on this week…”, please press the little x on the top right hand corner of your browser. Yes it was the coveted 2009 VGAs. For those of you not in the know that’s the Video Game Awards. If you didn’t really see who the winners are, Tody was at the event and has got you covered check out http://egamer.co.za/2009/12/vga-the-winners-are/

So today’s question is: What 2010 announcement are you most excited about from the VGAs?

As always, I decided to poll the rest of the folk wondering around the halls @ eGamer and here’s what they had to type say:

Nitrate: UFC (Ed: I could have told you that)

Slobber: Dota 6.65 (FB: I did try an explain that it had to be an announcement from the VGAs)

Tody: (Still not back from the VGAs but I can bet it’s Batman)

alcardu: deadliest warrior

Emo Nik: Still deciding (Emo’s don’t make quick decisions)

UberTaner: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 2 although he’s still far more excited about Mass Effect 2

phANT1m: Halo ZzZzzZz

My favourite announcement other than the $2 Taco special they had has got to be Rock Band: Green Day. It’s gonna be Epic!

Fridays in the office are pretty chilled here at the eGamer offices. You’ll generally see folk like Tody in a Hawaiian shirt or Nitrate sporting a pair of shorts showing off those stick legs. And you may even see the odd visitor like Storm walking about.

Around the boardroom table, things were pretty chilled today and for QOTD we were feeling a tad nostalgic. The discussion got around to hot gurls in games as it usually does but then someone said something about some girl fighter being rubbish and then the discussion moved on to who could bash whose face in a fighter game. To be dead honest I was eyeing the doughnuts on the table so I missed most of the conversation.

Anyway today’s question is: What is your favourite fighter game of all time and as a sub question, who is your favourite fighter? Again I thought I’d ask the folk here at the eGamer office:

Slobber: MkII – Kitana because that chick was hawt and for 50c he could spend all day at the arcade beating n00bs with her*

Tody: Street Fighter IV – Ken (Ed: Tody had a long story about how Ken is cool and Ryu is gay but Fatbob really was to busy tucking into the doughnuts to be taking notes)

Nitrate: MK1 – Johnny Cage although he does have a special place in his heart for all the times Goro stomped him into the ground

DaekinHO (Ed: who was actually awake for a change): Tekken Tag and after a some debate his favourite hero is King and not Jean

Storm: The Sims and her favourite character is Dean… Yar now I know why we don’t usual ask gurls gaming questions

Ofc we know Kitana is the best and hawtest.

FB Out!

*AZNs excluded of course, no1 can beat the AZNs from Kensington @ MK2.

While sitting around the board room table at the eGamer offices (Read: TS @ 3am in the morning with Nitrate in his mom’s basement, Tody in bed because he’s a lightie and me in my study) discussing new ideas for eGamer, someone pipes up that doing a top 5 list once a week would be cool. So after some discussion, Nitrate ignores all our input and says “Top 5 every Thursday, Fatbob you’re up first!”

And Manly Men, ladies and dooshes here is the very first ever eGamer top 5 list. This week’s list is going to be focused on something I read in the December issue of Men’s Health. Now Men’s Health is a manly magazine read by real Men and not for teenage boys that think FHM is for men. eGamer Top Tip: Popping your collar or doing anything else recommended by FHM is not manly.

However not everything in the Men’s Health Tech guide this month was manly, so I’ve gone through the list and I will be recommending the top 5 Manly items along with some items on their list that for the not so Manly.

eGamer’s Top 5 gadgets in Men’s Health that you shouldn’t buy because you are not manly enough.

Starting off with Consoles MH took a pretty neutral stance on what consoles you should get. However it is a known fact that the Playstation 3 is the only MANLY console available currently. First on our list, Fatbob recommends you non Manly folk should not buy a PS3, but in fact you should buy a Xbox 360 because it comes in beige and will match your couch.

PS3 – The Manly choice.

And if beige doesn’t match, I’m sure pink will

Continuing with Gaming MH recommends the most manly driving game this year to be Gran Turismo 5. Now no one can argue with that and even if you think you can, I don’t really care. However a very unmanly recommendation was Batman: Arkham Asylum. It’s pretty obvious why this isn’t manly and if you don’t know why it isn’t manly please stop reading this article.

Racing Cars = Manly

Spandex not so Manly

Next moving onto mobile phones MH recommends the HTC Hero as their best all rounder phone. However this is only for the Manly Man who doesn’t need to follow trends. Thus for all you trendy boys out there, Fatbob recommends the iPhone. That way you can be a trendy doosh and you and your popped collared friends can all hold hands with the apple fanboi’s club.

HTC Hero – For Manly Heros

Special Thanks to Nitrate for lending us his iPhone

In the earphone arena MH has the Sennheiser MX 55 VC earphones. Now I can vouch for these badboys they’re really super cool and the quality as far as earphones go is awesome. However for you trendy boys out there you can get a set of Skull Candy Low Riders for when the bling is more important than the quality. Another eGamer top tip: Bling is NEVER more important than quality.

Manly earphones for Manly Music

Yeah WTF?

Lastly on our list we take a look at the GPS’s recommended and the most manly option of course is the Garmin Oregon 550. It’s rugged, waterproof and doesn’t look like it’s made for pansy’s. Perfect to take with you out to the middle of the jungle with just your trusty knife. For the not less manly, Fatbob recommends any GPS that that goes in your car. Why? Because if you were manly, you’d never need to ask for directions while driving. And yes that includes asking a GPS.

So today while walking around the eGamer office (Ed: read – idling in #eGamer) I heard some tunes on the radio and it made me think of what music I listen to while playing games. So yeah today’s question is what music do you listen to while gaming whether it be PC or Console.

To give you a little insight into the <del >lazy</del> hardworking people at eGamer, I wondered around the office some more and polled some random people I ran into. Here are their answers:

Nitrate: Michael Bublé

Tody: Chromium – The Last Time, Apocalyptica – Stroke, The Annoying In-Game Music and Papercut from Linkin Park

Slobber: Phil Collins

DaekinHO: Nothing as he was ZzZzz at his desk and I didn’t want to wake him

phANT1m: eminem, linken park and snow patrol

Ofc while Phil Collins is my no. 1 choice, most of the time I’m subjected to Nitrate/Ubertaner/Cheeezy/Bukris or some other n00b whinning on TS, so there are no tunes.

Good news for all you Guitar Hero fans out there! A new GH is coming out if you didn’t know, and as always it promises to be orrsum! As with the last releases, it will have lots of different multi-player options and modes to keep things interesting when jamming with friends. Availability, if the <del>useless</del> people @ take2 are to be believed (Ed: I wouldn’t), should be early March next year for us South Africans. If you’re importing, the US is soon! Just before Christmas, to be exact 22/12/09.

The new Guitar Hero has got an awesome line up of songs that will have you clicking playing your guitar, bashing your drums and even wailing. Who wouldn’t want to jam to classics like:

Pretty Orrsum? Yeah that’s what I thought at first as well.

There is just one thing that is going to ruin this title. It includes 25 songs from some yesteryear band that nobody’s ever heard of. Yeah it’s Guitar Hero Van Halen. Now I’m sure you have two questions.

Firstly who is Van Halen? And secondly is it wrong to have feelings for a hot cousin? While I can’t answer the question surrounding if having feelings for your hot cousin is wrong I can tell you who Van Halen is.

In short, Van Halen is some American <del>crap</del> rock band that has a whole bunch of members with the surname Van Halen, and their lead singers David Lee Roth and Sombody Hagar leave and rejoin the band every so often. They’ve sold lots of albums apparently although they were never really big outside the states. A song of theirs you’d recognise? I couldn’t find any.

So in short, you can drop R600 to play the awesome guest acts and ignore Van Halen or hope these songs get included by our friends who make Rockband.

FB out!

P.S. Shout out to my band Ubertaner (Lead Guitar), Cheeezy (Bass) and Bukris on Vocals

Welcome back everyone! We hope you are well rested from week 13, things are going to be heating up here at Koth once more. Right now miNt Gaming is still our King team, standing proudly on top of the the Hill, and the scoreboard, with a total of 3 points.

We have various announcements to make so please take a moment to read through them:

After some discussion and various emails we have updated our Rules and Regulations, if all participants would be so kind as to go read the updated set please.

This week we are also officially finished moving over to the Dota version, 6.61b. We hope to not only to stay ahead of the game by introducing this version, but also to see some nice strat-shuffling take place in matches as teams will have to adjust their strategies accordingly.

We know many of you have been wondering about this, and so we are glad to announce that the not-so-old, not-so-retired players of Just Juking (jj.dota) will also be joining the fray from this week onwards.

And speaking of joining the fray, with our co-admin Blink busy hunting a wife in the UK we are happy to announce that Richard ‘Demonik’ is our newest addition the the Koth Admin Team. We hope Richard can take the heat coz this kitchen gets broiling!

Lastly we have some double taped news to announce. Rectron will remain our proud Prize Sponsor, but unfortunately can no longer sponsor an unlimited supply of prizes. Thus we we have to change our prize structure, from that of a tier’d structure to a winner-takes-all structure. The upside to this is that our prizes are now guaranteed to be top notch! The winning team at the end of week 25 (24 + 1 break week) will be walking away with some really legendary hardware!!

!!GET READY TO SORTIE!!

This tournament is proudly sponsored by Rectron!

Ladies and gentlemen, We have a grand announcement to make! This week, week 12, marked Koth’s 3 month anniversary!! That’s right, we have been up and running since the beginning of May and are now officially 3 months young. We, the slaving men and alleged woman, behind Koth, want to send out a big THANK YOU! to every single one of you. Support has grown over the last few months and even with the end of the month, week 12 saw a sizable group joining us for the commentary and live stream!

So whether u be player or spectator, old school or still learning, die hard fan or one time passer-by, we sincerely wish you a merry week 13!

To celebrate our 3 months of success we are taking a much needed break, thus week 13 (4 August) will have no match, but instead we will be bringing you a little bit of our own flavour: Our very own Fatbob ‘Slobber’ will be posting a summarised look at the previous 12 weeks. It is promising to be a very very good read (Ed: saw rough draft ^^) Side by side with Fatbob, ‘Nitricity’ has promised to bring us an all round interview with the original creators of eGamer Koth and the dedicated admin team behind it all!

Want to have a say in Koth’s future?
Well now is your chance, for during our break we will be working on tweaking Koth from every angle to increase both the enjoyment and the ease with which we can all share our mutual passion! Simply email or contact any of our admin team with your suggestions.

Want to help out Koth?
We are always open for support in any form from you guys, here is a list of particulars we are working on ourselves:

    * Creation of a new KothSeries page. The current one was never intended as the real thing and so we are looking to tidy and pretty up our scoreboard a little.
* Local hosting space for replays[<1mb] &/ commentaries[<10mb] &/ audio interviews[<5mb]. Since Quickshare no longer accepts data we have to host our files internationally, which is not what we envisioned for Koth. Local is lekker!
* Game review writers. As you guys have seen our articles are not always as timely and regular as we would like. Writing unfortunately takes more than 5 minutes, thus we are always open to considering some freelance reviews of our games.

We hope you all enjoy your weekend and week 13 and we look forward to hearing from you.

glhf
- Koth Admin Team

Remember, eGamer is now local! The scoreboard, along with each team’s line up, is available at KothSeries.

Notice anything different? Well no the flashy new site looks the same as it did yesterday right? Well it is the same on the outside, but egamer has had a little revamp done under the hood. For all you cap kiddies (and by cap kiddies I mean people who have bandwidth cap issues, not Fred Durst Wannabe’s) out there, eGamer has moved to a local hosting provider.

No longer will you have no access to the latest gaming news after Telkom says no more international (Ed: Which is the 5th of the month for most of us). No longer will you not be able to vote for who is going to be battling for King of the Hill. eGamer is now accessible on local bandwidth, so you should have no excuses.

Focusing on KotH for a moment, as this is our 10th week running the management folk upstairs @ eGamer HQ (a.k.a Nitrate’s treehouse) decided to give out a little something extra to people who voted and participated in the King of the Hill vote. 30 voters were selected at random and have been given invites to Heroes of Newerth(beta). And yes this included people that voted for dedA.

Here is the list of winners:

Â

The Build up

Another week, another KotH round. This week’s KotH was contested between two old rivals Mint and Tankh. If you’re a little confused as to why Kings of Surf didn’t play, check out http://egamer.co.za/2009/06/king-of-the-hill-week-6-preview/
This was the second meeting between Tankh and Mint, the first time being in the very first KotH match. Mint prevailed the first time round, beating Tankh 34/27 in 46 minutes.

Admin Log:
Due to KingsOfSurf being notifying us the Friday before the game that they will not be able to field a team, Tankh in second place will play in tonights KotH. – KotH Admin team

This week saw some commentary stability issues as we weren’t quite expecting over 25 folk on teamspeak. It’s great to see KotH getting such great support and we will be looking at something to accommodate the demand for next week. It’s not all bad news however, as we do have a commentary that you can download and sync up with replay. This week’s commentary is courtesy of of Alcardu and Hallow (Ed: No ladies, it’s not Brad Pitt’s voice it really is Hallow).

The Overview

This week the good guys (the sentinel) were represented by Tankh with Mint representing the bad guys (the scourge). The game did start slightly later than usual and kicked off at 8:49pm. Tankh were randomly selected to go first and as always, your match official was fluKe (See Jesus I got it right.)

The Bans

So who are the three heroes you’ll never see in KotH game? It’s the Zombie, the Tauren and the Necrolyte as they were banned for the 6th consecutive week. Not really much to say about the bans as it contained the usual suspects.

Â

The Picks

Â
Well looking at the last couple of weeks, the first pick game as no surprise, as Rhasta seems to be the number one pick of late for his pushing ability. Tankh took two strong strength tanks (cos that’s what Tankh does) as well as Zeus for spam and Chen who at the time I was a little surprised to see picked, but more on that later. Mint on the other hand decided to focus a little more on the stun and initiating Heroes with Sandking/Pirate/Puck.

The Game and the Kills

Â
Having played each other quite a few times in the past, this fixture always produces some fireworks. And the fireworks started early this time, with first blood coming in just 36 seconds. SloJ was caught poking around in the sentinel bushes by Radox/Scant and punished for it.

Pictured: SloJ – likes it 3 on 1.

The lane setups were also slightly different to what we’re used to seeing. Mint went for the classic 2-1-2 with Was_Mac/MrAsssMan top, new recruit Blizzy Middle slowing with Morph and SloJ/Lemon-Grass bottom. Tankh decided on a triple solo strat with HorrorCast (Zeus) solo top, Angel (Clockwork) soloing mid, Nakor(Chen) in the bush and Scant(Rhasta) bottom with Radox (Naix). I was quite surprised that Tankh would try something like this against Mint, as Mint aren’t the sort of team that leave a jungle hero alone to… well errr jungle. After 5 minutes the score was 2/1 in Tankh’s favour, with SloJ having been involved in all 3 kills, twice on the receiving end. The farming was still very close at this stage 54/49 with Tankh just a few creep kills ahead. Early game saw Blizzy’s usual farmathon being hampered by the Clockwork, as Blizzy only had 5 creep kills after 10 waves of creeps.

Pictured: Angel fishing for pirates

Blizzy wasn’t the only one having trouble with Angel’s Clockwork, as SloJ, Waz_Mac and Lemon-Grass were all ganked early game with the assistance of Angel. 15 minutes in and the score was now 9/6 to Tankh who were also 1 tower up. Tankh’s focus was on early gangs and it still seemed 50/50 as to whether this would pay off or not. In their previous meeting with Mint, this had been their downfall. Both teams were still farming away, with Mint having the slight edge now 150/164. Still pretty close. And for the Blizzy fans out there, he was 49/10 at this stage.

The battle stayed fierce and things were pretty close. The team fights were really getting going now with each team trying to break the deadlock. The break came just after 19 minutes, when Angel with his annoying Clockwork took down 3 Minty fellows. This took the score to 14/11 and from here the floodgates seemed to open. In the next 6 minutes, Tankh racked up another 7 kills to Mint’s 1 and also took both the level 1 and 2 bottom towers and the level 2 tower top as well as the level 1 tower middle.

At the 25 minute Mark it was now 21/12 to Tankh and the towers were 5/1 to Tankh as well. Mint’s minor lead in CS wasn’t going to make much of a difference 286/269 wasn’t going to make a difference (Blizzy 96/14). Mint did put up a fight right until the end, but Tankh had stronghold over the map were never going to give an inch.

The End Game Screen

End game

The Summary

And that’s all she wrote folks. Week 6 (Ed: Isn’t it Week 7 already?) sees Tankh back at the top after dispatching of SloJ’s Blizzy enhanced Mint. It was a tight game, but Mint never really had the upper hand and in retrospect didn’t have the best pick to combat Tankh’s hero lineup.  My advice? Blizzy get those lazy folk from Bvd back in action and show these chuckleheads how it’s done. GGWP to both Mint and Tankh this week and good luck to all the teams for the vote.

Gank you in the bushes – FatBob

P.S. Don’t blame egamer/twilight/Fatbob for the article being late this week, blame the fantastic pr0n on a certain NZB site. ;)
