From the depths of hell, better known as the Activision CEO’s office, have come murmurs from a figure we’d almost forgotten about. Yes, your favourite rabid capitalist and mine, Bobby Kotick, is back with fresh news that is bound to steal the money from right under our mattresses.

Speaking to Financial Times following Activision’s first quarter earnings call, Kotick said, “We’ve more confidence in consumer spending, we feel like some of that has stabilised and there are price cuts on the [console] hardware in the works.”

Wait, what? Nani? Did he just say something concerning us SAVING money? This is unbelievable. Some good news, some hopeful news has escaped his lips.

Kotick did however say that current platform holders, i.e. Sony and Microsoft, should focus more on developing their online networks rather than looking ahead to the next generation. Possibly a jab at Sony for the PSN disaster.

Strangely, he may be on to something, Nintendo has already announced price cuts for the Wii and Microsoft are rumoured to be planning to announce the Xbox 360′s successor at E3 so it’s price could well drop but the only unknown is Sony with the PS3. As usual though, we will have to wait until E3 to see what materialises and separate the speculation and rumours from fact.

Ahead of the NPD Group’s release of official market data this week, game industry analysts have weighed in with their own sales predictions for the month of April, in the US.

Analyst firms Wedbush and EEDAR both predict that Microsoft’s Xbox 360 will be named the month’s top-selling console, with the “It only does everything, except go online” PlayStation 3 tipped to edge out the Wii.

Wedbush’s Micheal Pachter said in a research note that things aren’t looking great for the 3DS. “The long-awaited introduction of the 3DS has so far had a smaller impact than we originally expected,” he wrote.

“The handheld is off to a slow start, as a lack of compelling software has kept many consumers on the sidelines for the expensive hardware.”

Mostly because Nintendo have released an expensive piece of hardware with almost zero first-party application support. Well fucking played, guys…

On the software front, Pachter expects April sales to be dominated by everyone’s favourite puzzle-orgy, Portal 2, and everyone’s favourite guts-orgy, Mortal Kombat.

Here are the actual numbers for those who are interested:

Hardware sales estimates, Wedbush / EEDAR (year-over-year change):
360 – 315,000 (+70%) / 315,000 (+70%)
DS – 300,000 (-32%) / 325,000 (-26%)
PS3 – 210,000 (+16%) / 215,000 (+19%)
Wii – 215,000 (-22%) / 200,000 (-28%)
3DS – 200,000 (N/A) / 250,000 (N/A)
PSP – 90,000 (+37%) / 80,000 (+22%)
PS2 – 15,000 (-66%) / N/A
Total – 1,345,000 (+13%) / 1,385,000 (+16%)

It’s doesn’t need to be said that the Nintendo 3DS will need a lot more power to operate compared to the DS, but it doesn’t seem as though Nintendo has taken the liberty of providing a monster battery – most likely to reduce the cost and prevent having a too bulky handheld, I presume.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata had the following to say on the matter:

“As for the battery, it is inevitable that Nintendo 3DS will be a device which requires more frequent recharging than Nintendo DS,” he said during a recent Q&A with investors.

“This is why we are going to include the cradle, which is a dedicated battery charger.

“Perhaps we may need to dispatch to our consumers a message, something like, ‘Please place your Nintendo 3DS on the cradle as soon as you return home with it’.”

We do know that the 3DS will contain a Lithium ion battery, but there are no specifics as to how long the 3DS battery will last.

Note: Before complaining to my editor about the title picture, if you look closely you will notice a guitar.

It’s Monday (no make that Wednesday, thanks Eishkom) and I’ve had the 2nd most awesome news of the day! The 1st most awesome news involves a certain editor in chief’s mom and… oh wait I can’t print that here. The 2nd bit of awesome news is Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock will ship in a month’s time!

Now now I know what you’re thinking. It’s another guitar hero with more rubbish tracks like Band Hero. But it isn’t! Not one tiny bit! The folk at Activision have seen the light and given Taylor Swift a bit of Kanye West. Something like:

“Yo Taylor, I’m really happy for you, but I’m not going to let you finish because no one wants to play your songs… “

GH: Warriors of Rock is bringing the Rock back (Ed: Thank you Captain Obvious we can all read the name of the game). The full track list has finally been released and well some of those songs make me want to touch myself on my studio they’re so fucking kickass.

You’ve got some classics to jam to like:

Alice Cooper – “No More Mr. Nice Guy”

Deep Purple – “Burn”

Def Leppard – “Pour Some Sugar On Me (Live)”

Dire Straits – “Money For Nothing” <– OMG JIZZ IN MY PANTS

Metallica & Ozzy Osbourne – “Paranoid (Live)”

ZZ Top – “Sharp Dressed Man (Live)”

Megadeth – “Sudden Death”

Megadeth – “Holy Wars… The Punishment Due”

Megadeth – “This Day We Fight!”

A song that will make everyone want to play bass:

A blondie Reincarnation:

The Offspring – “Self Esteem”

The following was difficult to obtain, but with a few strings pulled here and there we were successful in getting close to their recent meeting and this is what we heard.

The following are the thoughts collected from the Made Men of the secret Japanese “Commission” of the gaming world regarding the 3DS.

The Commission:

Atsushi Inaba (Bayonetta, MadWorld)

“I’m being struck with the intense desire to make something on it. It’s the same sort of excitement I had when I first saw the Wii and DS in Nintendo’s office, but now it’s at a whole new level. This may the first time in the industry where the terms ‘next generation’ and ‘personal dream’ were so appropriate. I’d gladly throw away everything else for a shot at touching the 3DS.”

Keiji Inafune (Mega-Man, Dead Rising)

“Video games need three things to be successful: a concept, a technology platform, and good marketing. The Nintendo 3DS is a perfect example of those three things bundled into one.”

Hideki Kamiya (Okami, Bayonetta)

“3D on a large screen has an impact on you and gets you that much closer to the game or movie you’re watching, but 3D on the 3DS’s smaller screen is interesting in its own right. Instead of feeling like you’re ‘really there,’ you feel like it’s ‘really in the palm of your hand,’ so to speak. Having these dynamic home 3D titles is great and all, but personally, I want to take a different approach and make games that take advantage of what a 3D portable has to offer.”

Hiroyuki Kobayashi (Resident Evil 5, Devil May Cry)

“Our own Resident Evil was shown on the show floor and was well received, but when I saw Metal Gear, I felt the new potential of the 3DS. I’d like to make something.”

Hideo Kojima (Metal Gear, Metal Gear Solid)

“I wear glasses, so I’m happy that 3D glasses are not needed. I directed the E3 demo. It was based off Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater, but the backgrounds and character modeling were all redone in high polygon. It’s not finalized, but we’re thinking about CO-OPs and other things — elements fitting of a 3D and portable game machine.”

Toshihiro Nagoshi (Super Monkey Ball, Yakuza)

“Nintendo has been re-examining the concept of game consoles as ‘toys’ ever since the Wii, and I think the 3DS is the final result of those efforts. If you believe that gamers will demand more social features and immersiveness in their portable single-player or multiplayer experiences, then Nintendo certainly has that covered with the 3DS’s Wi-Fi and 3D features. There’s a lot of ideas I’d like to work with.”

Yoshinori Ono (Street Fighter IV, Super Street Fighter IV)

“We’d like to put in some ideas that make effective use of the portability.”

Goichi Suda (No More Heroes, Killer 7)

“It really makes me feel the speed at which the history of video games is unfolding — like, ‘We’ve really made it this far, huh?’ You have a living, breathing world you can touch right in your hands. I think we’ve finally gone from an era of constructing virtual worlds from pixels to one where the world is truly, honestly there. If I had to sum up the sort of game I’d like to make, I would simply call it ‘the next game,’ because the 3DS marks the arrival of the ‘next platform.’”

Shu Takumi (Phoenix Wright, Ghost Trick)

“As a creator, I feel that a new challenge has started…I’d like to show a mystery in a 3D space.”

There you have it. Straight from the Made Men on the “commission.”

What do you think?

THQ’s publishing boss Ian Curran said that the Nintendo 3DS will in fact help ‘combat piracy’.

“What excites me even more [than 3DS games] is that there’s technology built in that device to really combat piracy,” Curran said to CVG.

“The problem with the DS market in the last few years, particularly with the DS Lite, is that it’s just been attacked by piracy. It’s made it almost impossible to shift any significant volume. The DSi combated it a little bit, but the 3DS has taken that a step further.”

Apparently when asked about the technology, and how it might work, Nintendo said that it’s too complicated to explain. Therefore all the information is pretty much locked away in their secret Japanese vault under the sea.

The 3DS piracy-war falls in line with previous reports from Nintendo.

Sony predicts that Microsoft and Nintendo will launch their new home consoles before it gets round to unleashing the fourth generation of PlayStation.

The three platform holders are still to publicly discuss a new iteration of their core gaming hardware, which leaves gamers to speculate over what technology a ‘Wii 2′ or ‘Xbox 720′ may contain.

Shuhei Yoshida, Sony’s Worldwide Studios boss, said that despite the fact that four years have passed since the PS3′s global debut, it still had a “longer lifecycle”ahead of it compared to that of the Xbox 360 and Wii.
“Naturally, in my opinion, Microsoft will make the first move. Or, because Nintendo’s approach was not to upgrade much on its basic hardware – Wii doesn’t even support HD resolution – so they might be the first to move.

“Probably we should watch these companies, in my opinion. Because PS3 was later than Xbox, and is more powerful, so it has a longer lifespan.”

It has come to attention that the 3DS has an internal memory, which allows multiple games to be stored on it at once.

This is according to Japanese financial paper Nikkei, who says that although the feature didn’t get any air time at E3, players will be able to copy games onto the internal memory.

What does all this mean some of you might wonder?

Answer: This means that you’ll be able to switch between games by selecting the desired game from the system’s main menu, so there will be no need to swap cartridges or carry games.

Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo America President, has said that the Nintendo 3DS has “no health-issues” …except for children under the age of 7.

“We will recommend that very young children not look at 3D images,” Fils-Aime said at E3 yesterday.

“That’s because, [in] young children, the muscles for the eyes are not fully formed.”

“This is the same messaging that the industry is putting out with 3D movies, so it is a standard protocol. We have the same type of messaging for the [1990s Nintendo virtual reality machine] Virtual Boy, as an example.”

Much of Nintendo’s products are “kid friendly”, therefore this may come as a shock to some.

Are the batteries about to fall out of Nintendo software market? Namco Bandai certainly thinks so, saying the market for games on both the Wii and DS has “collapsed”.

He went on to say:

“It’s a tough market,” Namco Bandai’s Olivier Comte told MCV. “We had a lot of product, and the average quality of a game on DS and Wii is very, very bad. So in the mind of the consumer today, to buy a DS or Wii game is to buy a game that isn’t very good.”

“One of the reasons the DS collapsed is piracy, it is very clear, but also it is a fantastic machine and very easy to develop for. It was possible for three kids in a garage to make a game for it.

“DS is the most successful platform ever, but all my kids’ friends at school have a DS with an R4. They have 100 games for no money. So yes, the market has collapsed for the DS and Wii.”

Former Square Enix writer, Masato Kato, believes that Nintendo’s dominance of the handheld console market is about to be brought to an abrupt end. Kato, most famous for Final Fantasy VII, Xenogears and Chrono Trigger, believes that Apple’s iPad will be the one to end Nintendo’s handheld dominion.

“With the iPad going on sale, the epoch of Nintendo is finished,” Kato said on Twitter (via internet translations). “But with the DS and the Wii, it’s been digging its own grave,” he added, with no follow-up as to explain his reasoning.

I’m not exactly sure what he means since Nintendo have been highly successful with the Wii and DS but perhaps he means that Nintendo are now getting over-confident and not doing enough to keep its consoles above the competition. Nintendo’ boss, Saturo Iwata, has already been reported as having said that the battle with Sony is “already won” and that the Apple is “the enemy of the future.”

A possible Nintendo 3DS platform was filed with the FCC about half a month ago. The new board reveals parts from the Nintendo DS which includes two screens, a controller and a camera. These components have been added to a rather large motherboard.

So, this is probably a test unit. Or someone has pimped their DS.

Interesting parts seem to include a dual screen, where one is a wide unit.

The wider screen on top also looks similar to that of Sharp’s auto-stereoscopic 3D technology, the technology choice for Nintendo’s 3DS.

Nintendo should reveal their 3DS at E3 next month. We’ll find out more then.

Core, a local distributor for technology, has announced that the Nintendo DSi XL will hit the market in the April month. The new gaming device will arrive during late April, where it will have 4.2-inches of gaming LCD, and this means a 93% larger viewing area when compared to the DS Lite.

Similar to the DS Lite, there will be a stylus pen along with touch screen technology. The XL, on the other hand, will have a bigger pen — because well, XL.

Different colours will be available, in case you’re sensitive about these kinds of things. Then again, no boy wants to be running around with a pink DS — right?

Pre-installed software includes Dr Kawashima’s: Little Bit of Brain Training: Arts Edition, as well as a Dictionary and Nintendo’s DSi browser.

We’ll release the pricing soon.

Nintendo execs have apparently said that they were given the option to benefit from the same technology which powers Microsoft’s Project Natal, however they declined as camera technology was a bit too pricey.

A trustworthy source around the matter said that Nintendo’s boss, Satoru Iwata saw the technology at the end of 2007 where he was not interested. The insider also commented on Microsoft’s Natal, and the companies promises as Nintendo said that they “remain unconvinced Natal will deliver on the more sophisticated elements of what Microsoft is promising at the price they’re aiming for.”

This isn’t the first time that we’ve heard about Nintendo being familiar with the technology.

For those who like to customise everything from their consoles to their watch straps, you will be pleased to know that EA games have signed multi-year licence agreements with three electronic accessory manufacturers. The accessories are EA SPORTS-branded and available for consoles, mobile platforms and even PC. This will also include EA SPORTS Active’s line of “interactive fitness products” which more than likely means the Wii but could also include Xbox since Project Natal is out soon.

Sakar International will produce Wii and Nintendo DS accessories such as a “Nintendo DSi(TM) Football Kit” consisting of a game case, earphones, skin and stylus with football-like textures and materials. As well as other football products such as sports-themed MP3 players, digital cameras and computer keyboards and mouse pads with graphics resembling a football field.

Accessories 4 Technology's Wii Fit gear -Expect football themes-

Sunflex Europe has started production on more than 20 products and Accessories 4 Technology will produce for all platforms including iPod. Vice President of Brand Marketing at EA SPORTS, Glenn Chin said the partnerships will “improve our consumers’ experience and deepen their connection to the fabric of sport”. So if replacing your controllers with sports themed branded ones will connect you to your sport game of choice then you can expect the first batch of products to be released around autumn this year.

Good news for all you Guitar Hero fans out there! A new GH is coming out if you didn’t know, and as always it promises to be orrsum! As with the last releases, it will have lots of different multi-player options and modes to keep things interesting when jamming with friends. Availability, if the <del>useless</del> people @ take2 are to be believed (Ed: I wouldn’t), should be early March next year for us South Africans. If you’re importing, the US is soon! Just before Christmas, to be exact 22/12/09.

The new Guitar Hero has got an awesome line up of songs that will have you clicking playing your guitar, bashing your drums and even wailing. Who wouldn’t want to jam to classics like:

Pretty Orrsum? Yeah that’s what I thought at first as well.

There is just one thing that is going to ruin this title. It includes 25 songs from some yesteryear band that nobody’s ever heard of. Yeah it’s Guitar Hero Van Halen. Now I’m sure you have two questions.

Firstly who is Van Halen? And secondly is it wrong to have feelings for a hot cousin? While I can’t answer the question surrounding if having feelings for your hot cousin is wrong I can tell you who Van Halen is.

In short, Van Halen is some American <del>crap</del> rock band that has a whole bunch of members with the surname Van Halen, and their lead singers David Lee Roth and Sombody Hagar leave and rejoin the band every so often. They’ve sold lots of albums apparently although they were never really big outside the states. A song of theirs you’d recognise? I couldn’t find any.

So in short, you can drop R600 to play the awesome guest acts and ignore Van Halen or hope these songs get included by our friends who make Rockband.

FB out!

P.S. Shout out to my band Ubertaner (Lead Guitar), Cheeezy (Bass) and Bukris on Vocals

Rumours revolving around the next-generation Wii, or the Wii 2 state that there might be a Blu-Ray player which supports 1080p. Nintendo are apparently looking towards Blu-Ray as it not only helps <del datetime="2009-10-30T11:42:11+00:00">stop</del> prevent piracy, but the Japanese company is also seeing it as a viable format for the future.

A high-definition Wii would be absolutely crazy, and it will definitely be a good idea for the 2010 year.

With regards to the piracy prevent, we’re not too sure. You will never be able to stop piracy as there will always be a way around this. Good luck to those who try though.

Alongside the rumour of the new Blu-Ray technology, more leaks state that there will be no Wii 2 news until about a month before its released. The company will then allow existing Wii owners to trade in their old system for a discount on the new one.

A cash back system they say? Me likey.

According to reliable sources, the new Nintendo DSi will apparently come with a larger screen for more enjoyment. While everyone knows, bigger is better, it seems as if Nintendo do not want to blow their big idea just yet.

The DSi is said to have a 4-inch screen when it is released later this year, however when Nintendo was asked about this upgrade, they said: “Our company isn’t doing any interviews [about this]. We think it’s a speculative article.”

While a bigger screen would mean less DPI for games, it could also mean that Pokemon Red might become more enjoyable. Another reason for a big screen could be that old people like the DS, and old people can’t see well, therefore big screen equals win-win situation.

Of course we’re just pulling your leg regarding old people (hehe), but seriously, could the bigger screen be true? Well, it sure makes sense seeing as new technology will definitely make this possible. Let us know what you think in the comment section below.

Researchers have recently discovered that people that constantly play action games are actually improving their eye sight. The video-game training which players under go actually improve their ability to notice subtle differences in shades of gray, and this might help people that find it difficult to drive at night.

The quick pace from action games causes the brain to process visual information a lot more efficiently, and this allows all improvements to the brain to last a few months after the game play has stopped.

Just how does it work? Well, players are constantly changing their brain’s pathway which is responsible for the visual processing, this causes the brain to adapt so that it can work a lot more efficiently, resulting in better eye sight.

This study was proven to work mainly on action games or games which need a lot of hand eye coordination, as the tests resulted with the players playing action games featuring an average improvement of 43%, while the players playing Sims 2 for the test had no improvements.

No to carrots. Yes to games.

Sega have got their hands on the licensing rights to produce games based on the 2010 Winter Olympics, which will take place in Vancouver, Canada. The official news will soon be available on the official website, which can be found here.

The new licensing agreement means that the rumour of a Mario & Sonic at the Winter Olympics game will soon be revealed.

Sega’s new licensing agreement will, for the first time ever, feature both Mario and Sonic appear in a game together.
The game will feature two teams, team Mario and team Sonic. Each team will have a set of players which can then compete in the following events, aquatics, archery, athletics, fencing, gymnastics, rowing, shooting and of course, table tennis.
