2upGamers the 5th Round took place on Friday the 4th of May. We were asked to do a presentation regarding eGamer, as we needed to introduce ourselves before introducing a new addition to 2upGamers. Sticking with our approach to be different, we decided on a video presentation. Not only would this be shorter than an entire sleep-point-presentation, it would also be a little bit more interesting.

Whenever a video is being shown, the possibilities of what one can do are somewhat endless. Naturally, we took full advantage of having an audience of 120+ people. With all eyes on the screen, they were sitting ducks.

The video above shows our presentation, and ultimately, how we Rick Roll’d 120+ people at 2upGamers.

You’re welcome to hate us. And sorry about the video size.

About 2upGamers 5th Round

It was with excitement, apprehension and a beanie that I walked into the hall at Rygersdal Sports Club for the 5th 2upGamers event, flanked by Azhar and our good friend Nqaba (you may know him as Sage of the Six Paths). Let me explain. The excitement is obvious, the apprehension was due to eGamer doing something special this time around but also because we were late and so feared a beating from Dean for not being there to help set our special thingy up. The beanie was present on account of the cold weather.

Anyway, proceedings eventually got underway with a record crowd of over 120 people and 2up extraordinaire Glenn embracing the fighting theme of the night with an entrance reminiscent of Rocky. After needing help to remove his boxing gloves (he really went all-out on this one) Glenn announced that due to various corporate witchcraft, 2upGamers would soon be going national and is now an NPO which means that what you pay at the door will go to charity. It’s just one more reason to get your ass down to these events. More good news came when he announced that Hylton, 2up’s other frontman, was expecting a child with his wife and was appropriately attempting a Darth Vader cosplay (this was Star Wars day after all). Mazel Tov to Hylton and his wife and here’s hoping they don’t call the kid Luke or Leia.

Next up was Nizar from Readers Den Comic Shop who came to invite us all to his store in Stadium on Main for Free Comic Book Day which takes place on the first Saturday in May every year. For the record, I attended it the next day and was completely blown away by just how big the event was. I also got my hands on a copy of Watchmen and Batman: Year One which was awesome.

Friends of Design was up next to introduce Springleap’s new venture in game and app design competitions. For those unfamiliar with Springleap, they regularly host design competitions for advertising, apparel, and prints. They sell some pretty damn cool t-shirts as well. Springleap will soon host competitions for game and app design which should really produce some great stuff given the raw talent in SA.

Perhaps one of the most interesting things of the night was Friends of Design’s competition in conjunction with Springleap. The prize was a game-design course voucher from Friends of Design and one of 10 sweet tees from Springleap. The means by which you’d win that double prize was far more imaginative though. 20 members of the audience were chosen, including myself. We were split up into Sith and Jedi with me finding myself on the Dark Side. Fortunately my Yoda tee was concealed by my eGamer one, or things would’ve been strange to say the least.

How it worked was that we would take part in one on one lightsaber duels (with a green and red pool toy respectively). The winner of each duel would walk away with a tee and a voucher. I fought valiantly and even sustained some battle injuries but alas, the Force was strong with my opponent.

At some point in the proceedings, eGamer stepped up to have our say. We Rick Roll’d everyone present and announced that we’d be hosting a 2-v-2 FIFA 12 tournament on the night, but more on that later.

Following that, we also had the people from a new energy drink, called Ozone, talk to us about their product. Unfortunately, there weren’t samples for everyone, but the privileged few who did get to try said it tasted “like liquid fizzer” and “wasn’t as sweet as other energy drinks but was more refreshing”. Ozone has already already pledged allegiance to ZombieGamer and Xbox clan High 5, as well as 2upGamers which they will also sponsor with drinks from July.

One of the highlights of the evening was local actor Vince Andrews making an appearance. You may not know him by name, but you’ll remember him from the Prototype 2 live-action trailer. Not everyone remembers the trailer fondly, but it’s not his fault — the director was French. He shared some behind-the-scenes photos with us, and amazed us with not only the fact that he’s a homegrown Capetonian but also that the live-action trailer was shot in downtown Jo-burg with parts of it being shot in Soweto. We know, your mind is blown. Bet you didn’t know that tons of Indian movies are filmed here either but I digress. Tuns out, Vince is actually a really nice guy and even came in, mostly, full costume. He said that he was angry in the trailer because of a harness he had to be in for 4 hours, which gave him a wedgie of note.

Then, it got a little interesting when the Indian Alex Mercer cosplayer (he likes to go by Abduragman) showed up, but luckily Vince was having too much of a good time to beat him to a pulp.

The food arrived and all hell broke loose as 120+ people scrambled for some delicious pizza. Not really, but the pizza was still yummy.

Did I mention that MWeb had a dance-off competition to win a golden ticket to the Diablo III launch?

Okay — that’s all of the formal stuff out of the way, now we can talk about the eGamer tournament. Our tournament rocked. After the pizzas were consumed, we opened up sign-ups for the tournament where we had to deny two teams entry, to end off with 8 teams. The flavour of the night was 2-v-2 FIFA 12. It was a standard knock-out tournament but with the semi-finals taking on a UEFA Champions League style two-leg approach that relied on aggregate scores. The losers of the semi-finals faced off in a 3rd place match and on that note, well done to Jason (you may know him DieJason) and Ricky who took 3rd.

The final was a heated encounter between Rayaan and Taufiq’s Manchester City and BMT eSports’ Rohan and Francois who were controlling Real Madrid. Without going into too much detail, it was a tight but entertaining game which saw the BMT boys ultimately win 1-0 with a 2nd-half goal. Congratulations to Rohan and Francois on winning the tournament, and we’re looking forward to seeing you guys again next month.

The top 3 teams will be getting prizes courtesy of EA, but of course all thanks must go to Glenn who made it all possible. He pretty much organised everything for us, as we only needed to bring the banners and ourselves. We really appreciate everything you’ve done for us. We plan to make the eGamer tournament a regular fixture at 2up.

If you’re wondering why I’m the only eGamer team member in some of the pictures below, it’s because Dean doesn’t want photographic evidence of his existence for undisclosed reasons and Azhar’s sugar addiction means that he can’t stand still long enough for flash-photography — unless you have a high-end SLR camera. Thus, I was nominated as the face of eGamer and simultaneously branded as a hipster by Dean.

2upGamers 5th Round was definitely a knock-out blow, where the event doesn’t seem to be showing any signs of slowing down in growth. We hope to see everyone again at the next event.

Just like 2upGamers in Cape Town, Durban gamers have started up their own brand of gaming event called DBNGamers which was ironically held this time around at the Irish Pub and restaurant Waxys in Westville. All of this happened last week Friday, the day before St. Paddy’s day, where the venue was filled to the max with a decent amount of gamers.

Nothing rivalling 2upGamers, but nonetheless it’s a good start for a gaming event in Durban. Caveshen and I attended the 4th DBNGamers event and were pleasantly surprised at the turnout, and the massive support from Afrihost, Apex Interactive and the guys from El33tonline. Fifty-two people attended the event which is quite a bit considering it was a gaming event held in Durban. It’s great to see that the attitude is changing in Durban.

We arrived at the event in tow, with Caveshen and another accomplice of non-eGamer origins. We were there just in time as Caveshen was starting to froth at the mouth at all the prizes that were going to be given away, and all the people he knew extensively from Twitter and other social media sites. I met some of the readers that frequent the site, like Kyle Schulz whose friend for some reason thought I was Indian and Akshar, one of our other readers.

It was nice meeting some of the readers and putting names to faces. But the show eventually started to move on and the head honcho of El33tonline gave a speech about their site and what they do, and such. It was pretty much standard promotion stuff. As time went on, eventually Alexia Scotten from Apex Interactive gave a talk about all of their upcoming game releases with some noteworthy examples like the new Top Gun game, the Game Of Thrones RPG and some other games. We then socialised a bit afterwards.

Following the talks, and after having a hearty meal of roast chicken pie and chips; the first round of prize giving commenced. Caveshen didn’t win the Mass Effect 3 Collectors Edition. Instead, he won the Burnout Paradise collection. Following that, the first round of Zumba Fitness, one of the games on show, on the Kinect started.

We watched as gamers tried to pull off dance moves in time to the music. The results were funny and awkward at times. But it was all in good fun. The next game was a new Grease Kinect game where once again people had to dance in time to the music, and looked ridiculous as usual. Here’s a video to give you an idea of what was going down:

After all the Kinect fun, Caveshen had to leave for some reason or another (probably to get back to Mass Effect 3). So a friend and I decided to stay until the end of the event and waited for the last prize giving. After Caveshen left, my luck began to change and I won a Halo Reach t-shirt. To anyone out there I recommend not taking Caveshen to gaming events. I think he is cursed. You can go choose the paragon or renegade choice. It’s up to you.

However, I must say that event was fun with lots of drinking and banter between similar minded gamers. I had a great time and hope to frequent the next event of DBNGamers. Thanks to the organisers and Afrihost for the free bandwidth vouchers. At future events, I hope to see some of our Durban readers. So come and join us, and meet some of us awesome Durban people.

Friday 20th January marked the third 2upGamers event, and my first. It was thus with excitement and mild uncertainty that I climbed the steps to Friends of Design in the bowels of the Cape Town CBD.

There were in excess of one hundred people there including the regulars such as the good people from El33tonline. Everyone seemed excited to see what the guests from EA South Africa had in store and we were all obviously keen to get some free stuff.

It was amidst this that I took a place at the back with my wingman, Nqaba (whom you all know as sage of the six paths). We the met up with Dean who flatly refused to pronounce Nqaba’s name due to some aversion to clicks in names. Rest assured he redeemed himself later on.

Anyway, the event got underway and 2up co-founder/Xbox Ambassador Glenn Alexander took to the mic to get things running. Things started with a little intro from the generous hosts, Friends of Design, who are offering a course in game design if you’re so inclined. We then had a short presentation from Takealot who gave away three N7 Collector’s Editions of Mass Effect 3 to lucky gamers, and our own Dean was very nearly one of them (where he was chosen but not marked off the list). Thereafter, El33tonline had a short speech. This was of course all just a prelude to the the guests from EA who verily did not disappoint. And so the anticipation levels were matched only by the ungodly heat, as EA’s guest took to the stage despite being a tad late and a touch Australian.

EA South Africa had managed to rope in Community Manager Brad Pidgeon who oversees the South Pacific, Japan and South Africa as part of his region. We were treated to some great trailers for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Mass Effect 3 and Katy Perry’s partnership with The Sims. Although Dean was unlucky with the N7 Collector’s, he did win was a copy of Battlefield 3 (this is where he redeems himself) which he unselfishly gave to me because he already has the game on each platform. True story. Take note, Alessandro.

With the formalities over it was time to mingle, and the mercury seemed to only climb as people began to move about. Several consoles had been set up with titles such as Fight Night, Need for Speed: The Run and FIFA 12. There was even a group of guys who’d brought their own equipment to set up a little fighting game scene, complete with their own arcade pads.

Dean was one of the first casualties of the night after being slaughtered in FIFA (by DieJason) but perhaps he was off his game since I never once saw him touch a drop of alcohol! Shortly after this the pizzas arrived and all hell broke loose, although there was enough to go around.

I then began striking up conversations with a few random people who just happened to be near me — and it was amazing how friendly most of the people in attendance were. Above that, it was great to just be able to talk games to people who are completely on the same page as you, and it was also a fantastic way to meet new people.

I even had a conversation with Mr Pidgeon himself and we shot the breeze about Australia during the World Cup (FIFA not rugby), his experience of the Olympics and our own passions for FIFA. We also spoke a bit about the next FIFA title and what changes people would like to see. He will be going to a meeting in London this week to discuss just that, so feel free to make suggestions via Twitter.

All in all, it was a great experience with some awesome people and fantastic guests. I even got free stuff at my first meet. 2upGamers is taking Cape Town gaming to new levels and this is definitely something I want to be a part of, and you should too. It’s an awesome way for gamers to network and socialise (and win freebies) as well as for all of you to meet some of us from the eGamer team. Dean and I will likely be at most meets in the future and rest assured we will try to rope Azhar in as well, as we’d like to get to know some of the community ourselves.

Below are some arbitrary pics from the night which should give you a broad idea of what the events are like. Unfortunately, my paltry journalistic skills don’t include photographing events which I well and truly suck at, but I’m learning and perhaps next time we’ll actually have some more informative and meaningful shots of the event.

The next meet is on March 2, mark the date.

Xbox LIVE members across the globe created history, that’s right, history bitch, by setting a new Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous online 100m sprint, which featured 10, 539 participants and was achieved by users of Xbox LIVE during the Xbox Nations Free LIVE Weekend, April 23rd 2011.

“Congratulations to the crew from Xbox LIVE and most importantly, the thousands of Xbox LIVE members from across the globe who got up off their sofas to create this new Guinness World Record for the largest ever online sprint. The new record will be considered for inclusion in the next Gamer’s Edition,” said Editor of Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition 2011, Gaz Deaves. This after thousands participated in the world record attempt at 7pm South Africa time on Saturday 23rd April as part of Xbox Nations, a challenge inviting Xbox LIVE members to ‘Play for their Nation’ to help create history with Xbox LIVE and Kinect Sports. Or just a reason to get more exposure for the Kinect. Either way.

“We’re thrilled to hold a Guinness World Record title for the largest online 100 metre sprint! Breaking a Guinness World Record is such a massive milestone and we’re pleased that we had the chance to do this in partnership with the Xbox LIVE community, following our record breaking launch of Kinect,” said Yvette Van Rooyen.

This endeavour through Xbox Nations helped to celebrate the Free Live Weekend alongside other offerings such as access to the latest music, movies and multiplayer gaming for all Xbox LIVE members, showing the millions of users how the online entertainment destination is changing the way people enjoy their favourite form of entertainment, play games and interact with friends.

Marvel Universe developer Gazillion recently held an event in San Francisco to reveal the writer for its upcoming MMO, but ended up revealing a lot more. Though most of the questions were met with a “we’re not ready to talk about that yet,” what was confirmed and hinted at allowed far more details than was previously available.

What has been confirmed:

Marvel Universe will be free-to-play, and was planned that way from its inception.

It’s being developed by Secret Identity, a sub-group of Gazillion that was formed in late 2009 specifically to build Marvel Universe.

You can play as Marvel characters, and other players can be the same hero as you at the same time, which the devs believe creates “lots of problems and lots of opportunities.”

You won’t have to choose only one character, but will be able to play as all of them.

Some of the characters you will play as are: Captain America, Iron Man, Wolverine, Hulk, Thor, Spiderman, Nova, and Squirrel Girl.

Doctor Doom will be the game’s main villain (at least at launch).

Brian Michael Bendis is writing for the game.

According to Brian, “no corner of the Marvel Universe will be left unturned,” although he was likely referring to over the game’s lifetime, not necessarily all at launch.

You will play through existing stories that are told in the comic books.

The game world exists within the canon Marvel Universe–this is not an alternate reality scenario.

Marvel Universe is being made primarily for adults (as opposed to Gazillion’s other kid-focused Marvel MMO, Marvel Superhero Squad). They want to target core gamers first, and also make it accessible for everyone else.

What has been hinted at:

There has to be lots of content that isn’t based on existing comic book stories.

It will likely be released on consoles after it’s on PC. When asked about a console release, one of the developers said that it would come to PC first, but that they want as many people as possible to play it and other platform releases were “TBD, no wait, TBA!” That he felt the urge to clarify it was going to be announced, not decided, makes me think it will be coming to consoles.

The game should have some open world environments: references were made to “hundreds of Wolverines” running around, which the developers feel is less of a problem than no one getting to play as recognizable characters.

When asked if it would be browser-based, the developers insisted that accessibility was a crucial part of their game design, but they also stressed that they would be delivering a AAA-quality game. We’ll have to wait to find out this one for sure.

What we have speculated on:

You might be able to play as a villain. It’s true that Doctor Doom was described as “the main villain” for the game’s main story–not just for heroes–but it’s possible that he’s gone rogue, and both sides have reasons for wanting to stop him. (confidence in prediction: 50%)

It seems like the best way to keep the whole “everyone can be Wolverine” problem contained is to provide a heavily-instanced experience. I would not be surprised if they follow a similar route to Guild Wars, and Gazillion’s own Marvel Superhero Squad: centralized hubs for chatting/hanging/crafting and instanced missions. (confidence: 60%)

If it is a browser game, they’re likely using the Unity engine. No other engine that we know of could come close to providing the experience they want to deliver in a browser. They would not confirm if they’re building a new engine or using an existing one, but it seems likely that they’re using an existing one since the game has only been in development for a little over a year. (confidence: 20%)

A major form of monetization in Gazillion’s Marvel Superhero Squad is purchasing new heroes to play as. In Marvel Universe, you might have to buy/earn the many heroes that you want to play as and to experience their stories. (confidence: 60%)

I’d be surprised if you could “swap” between Marvel heroes on the fly like you do in Gazillion’s other Marvel MMO, Marvel Superhero Squad, that would feel very weird in story-driven missions where you’re playing out a specific character’s story from the comic books. (confidence: 30%)

I’d guess that the game should be in open beta in mid-to-late 2012. It was specifically said that the game is “still a ways out,” but open betas usually come quickly for free-to-play games. (confidence: 50%)

The first weekend of October, year in and year out, see’s the biggest LAN happening in South Africa, if not Africa. With around 2000+ gamers converging for a weekend of gaming, socialising and sharing and caring, the rAge NAG LAN is no joke.

Every year more and more seats are being added, where the tickets continue to sell out faster and faster. The ticket sales keep setting a new record for how fast they disappear. This year about 2085 tickets were sold in 36 hours.

Friday morning had me packing the car and leaving at 8:00 AM to arrive at the LAN, where there was a long queue of people lined up. Luckily as I was walking to the back I managed to snag a trolley which made it a whole lot easier to lug my PC up and down the line. After waiting in the line for about 45 minutes, management snatches the trolley away — just a tip: organise better ways for people to move their PC’s. At long last I finally reached the front, had my PC checked by the “Power” crew, collected my goodie bag and got strapped with my orange LAN band. Entering the LAN area at around 9:40 or so I was greeted by a sea of gamers in the designated area.

Walking to the end I finally found a spot and setup my PC only to experience network problems. Last year we were given Static IP’s, however this year it was automatically assigned. After a bit of difficulty and with some help from the very helpful VC crew, I was up and running. Turns out that there was a slight problem with the DHCP server which was sorted out soon enough. After this it was mostly smooth sailing.

One thing that made me feel slightly out of place was the fact that I barely saw any “Play” energy drinks. Last year Play was on site in full force giving out drinks. We even had people making pyramids out of empty cans.

At any given time you could find couple a hundred people playing games. DotA, CoD: MW, CoD: MW2, CS 1.6, CSS, HoN, and a ton of other random games. Besides the official CoD 4 tournament there was an unofficial DotA tournament that was a whole lot bigger than last year’s one. The other competition which a lot of people anticipated was the Do Gaming championships, however it was dropped.

With all that was going on we cannot forget the Guinness record that was being set. The record required at least 100 people to be playing for 40 hours which is no great feat for the gamers at NAG LAN, as that is what they are already doing. I just ponder over whether DreamHack (The biggest LAN in the world) thought about setting the record also, but we might have the record for the time being. At the moment the documents are being adjudicated by Guinness.

Overall the LAN was valued over R4-million. There were 12 Intel 6-core Xeon dedicated gaming servers, and everything ran smoothly. The switches and servers ran far below maximum capacity allowing for smooth sailing. It was said that about 540TB of data moved through the switches at the event, and this doesn’t include direct data between individuals.

This weekend marked the eighth rAge LAN and Expo hosted in Johannesburg. For those of you unfamiliar with rAge, it’s South Africa’s largest and most prestige gaming event with a Local Area Network hosting over 2,000 players, and an Expo which comprises of game distributors, shops, displays, and Booth Babes. Along side gamers playing games and visitors visiting, there was an international presence, from Fnatic, which included two World-Class Quake players: Sebastian “Spart1e” Siira and Pierre-Emeric “link1n” Portier, as well as World-Famous Call of Duty player Conney “KyoChi” Sjoberg.

rAge started on Friday and Dell was the first to use the event to launch Alienware gaming laptops in the country. The machines launched includes the M11x, the M15x and the M17x which costs a whopping R(32,000). These machines are capable of tremendous performance for maximum Frame Per Second gaming.

The LAN which accommodated around 2,080 players attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the longest running LAN. The LAN ran for 51 hours breaking the 40 hour world record, however the documentation has been sent to Guinness for adjudication. There’s no word on this just yet.

Competitions included an unofficial DotA tournament, a Call of Duty tournament won by Bravado Gaming, and Quake play-offs — in the Expo itself.

KyoChi - Spart1e - Link1n

The Quake play-offs were interesting as competitors would play against Sebastian and Pierre-Emeric for a couple of laptops, if they won. Unfortunately each team took the term “Sitting Ducks” to a new level as they were all smoked about 50-1. And boy were there a lot of Gauntlet frags. Top South African Quake players, Travis “Shase” Weedon and Stephen “Ph4ntim” Cloete, then decided to challenge the Internationals where they narrowly lost by 24 – 17.

For the stalls, Electronic Arts South Africa was on hand with the next big showcase as they put a full-on Cage inside The Dome. The Cage was kitted for Mixed Martial Arts fights, which I happened to miss each and every single one throughout the weekend. Throughout the day, friends and family were allowed to suit up into Sumo-Wrestler costumes where they would wrestle to win prizes. EA gave away a lot of prizes–from games to transferable tattoos–to fans chanting the “phrase that pays” out aloud. EA Games on show included Medal of Honor and Fifa 11 at the Telkom doGaming stand, as well as EA Sports MMA and Need for Speed Hot Pursuit next to the Cage.

Nu Metro had a booth which included Vanquish, Dead Rising 2, F1 2010 offering the full experience with racing seats and steering wheels, Marvel Vs Capcom and a few other titles. To keep promoting their stand they had Booth Babes and other guys dressed up as characters from various games.

The Megarom stand was really impressive as it hosted Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood with Multiplayer support, Rapala Pro Bass Fishing, Tony Hawk Shred with a Skateboard that works with the game, Enslaved and DJ Hero 2 amongst others.

Alongside the stand, Megarom used the stage with the big screen to hold DJ Hero 2 competitions and Just Dance 2 face-offs, where mamma’s shook off to Outkast – Hey Ya. And it was damn entertaining.

Ster-Kinekor went for a more movable approach with the PlayStation Move and Gran Turismo 5, in racer form with a steering wheel, and in 3D. Whilst I didn’t find 3D GT5 too impressive, others thought that it was amazing — each to their own though. Move, on the other hand, is and was incredible. It brings motion control to new heights. Gran Turismo 5 boasts amazing graphics and it was really enjoyable in the booth-car, despite the fact that I sucked ass and everyone laughed at me.

Microsoft showed Kinect which was enjoyable to play. The Kinect setup included racing games, dancing games and other ‘keep fit’ things. Big M’s stand was seriously prominent in the middle of the arena where girls would dance the day away a story above everyone. Man, talk about being put on the spot. Following this Fable 3 was available for testing and Xbox Live was showcased for everyone to see what it will be about.

The Verge stand had Pippa Tshabalala on site interviewing and shooting from rAge, where Grant Hinds from GameState was doing the same with celebrities. We’ll link a few of the GameState clips during the week sometime.

On the technology side of things MSI, Asus and Frontosa were conducting overclocking experiments with various CPU’s and Liquid-Nitrogen. Not to mention they hosted quite a few competitions giving away clothing and laptops.

Another stand which seemed to be quite popular was the Magic The Gathering stand where fans and players were able to challenge each other, or buy and sell their cards.

Overall the Expo was really great, there were lots of games to play, and loads of new technologies to try out. There were setups where six different monitors were connected, others had three different monitors connected, and others were kitted out to be a race-car type effort for F1 2010 and Gran Turismo 5.

We’ll have a short piece on the LAN later in the week, and a few Hands-On articles thereafter.

Yesterday was the first Day of rAge 2010 where we opted to spend the day walking around, and playing a few of the games on show.

Alongside the massive LAN is the Expo which has various stalls–all kitted out really well–boasting up and coming technologies as well as a few new games.

From Fifa 11 to F1 2010 to Gran Turismo 5 in 3D to Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock to PlayStation Move to Microsoft Kinect. And much more. The expo is flooded with cool things to interact with.

Because we decided to spend the day on ourselves playing games and not taking photos there’s not much for us to share, just yet.

Except for Gran Turismo 5.

I was quite upset after wanting to play GT5 in the little booth car with the steering wheel and pedals. The whole day I was trying to look for a working version of this concept, however there was none. Whatsoever.

All I could get was this:

An error occured during the Install operation

Fortunately for me though, I was lucky enough to try out GT5 in 3D; which wasn’t really as impressive as it sounds. We all sort of agreed that it wasn’t exactly 3D, just good Hi-Def. But maybe that’s the TV.

And for the record, this isn’t a stab at GT5 — it’s just unfortunate that nothing with the game seemed to work.

Furthermore, there was EA Sports MMA — a really fun fighter. The controls for EA Sports MMA are similar to Fight Night where you use the Analog Joystick for punches, and this essentially means you could pull off some mean combos and fancy hooks. But more on this when we get a copy to review.

We haven’t had the opportunity to play all of the games yet, but we’ll use our time wisely today to keep you up to speed on what’s happening. Hopefully with pictures included.

This weekend saw “fluKe” hosting the very first online StarCraft 2 tournament with prizes. With over 100 people registered and over 300 games needed to be played this looked to be one of the most epic weekends for the local Starcraft 2 scene.

The tournament was run by fluKe and Alcardu with bLuuMz helping them administrate the tournament. The tournament was run extremely smoothly over IRC, as it was online. Anyone could play, and prizes were up for grabs. The top 4 spots won AMD CPU’s where 5th till 8th won 10GB Afrihost internet accounts. Also 3 spot prizes were handed out to people who completed their group matches and were not from the top 8 finalists.

Like all online tournaments, there were no shows but thankfully they did not cripple the event. The tournament saw many favourites going through with the public opinion that it would be either Shase (Bravado Gaming) or ANGRYAFRICAN (Ventus Gaming) winning the tournament. With ANGRYAFRICAN and Shase both motoring their way through the tournament from the groups and into the knockouts they were ready to rock.

With ANGRYAFRICAN coming out on top of his brother at the Megarom event, there was definitely something to prove in this game. With all his practice ANGRYAFRICAN managed an easy 2-0 win over Dreamer. Using his marine push with medivacs–which people are now calling the bio ball–he steam rolled Dreamer who tried to do a four-gate in the first game.

On the other end of the semi final round we saw Shase going up against Kreef Lewer. Both matches were played on Lost Temple, and it was interesting to see a base trade where Shase took out Kreef Lewer’s base and Kreef Lewer took out all of Shase’s probes. Shase keeping up the pressure, he managed to win. The second game was a fairly quick game with Shase finishing with a four-gate push.

After this ANGRYAFRICAN and Shase were ready to once again meet in the final round. With ANGRYAFRICAN bringing the raw power of the Terran to the table and Shase bringing the mysterious powers of the Protoss, it was bound to be epic.

The first match saw ANGRYAFRICAN meeting Shase on Lost Temple where he went with his Marine and Medivac push, but Shase managed to build a High Templar to counter the marine push. This left ANGRYAFRICAN surprising Shase with a hellion rush (five hellions rushing the High Templar) and cleaning up the rest with his Marines.

Thereafter the map choice went to Shase who opted to battle it out on Kulas Ravine. Unfortunately he lost to the “bio ball”.

On Metalopolis, the third map, Shase managed an early warp prism harass followed by a Colossus army — resulting in his first win.

ANGRYAFRICAN decided to take him back to basics by requesting a Lost Temple match-up. With Shase giving the four-gate push another shot, ANGRYAFRICAN pulled out some skillful micro-management with his workers resulting in a successful defense against the attack. Once the attack was over, ANGRYAFRICAN didn’t waste time by trying his luck pressurising Shase. After pushing in, Shase tried to hold off the attack with force-fields, however this could not last forever. Soon enough ANGRYAFRICAN breached and it was havoc.

Congratulations to ANGRYAFRICAN for winning the tournament.

For those who do not know Starcraft 2 has been going around like wild fire. Being a new game and with everyone’s interest in it companies are stepping forward to sponsor it. With the local Starcraft 2 scene having a shot at competing internationally due to the new network’s framework we are producing skilled players who can probably face off against European players and who knows maybe come out on top.

All this aside, to honour the launch of Starcraft 2 Megarom in association with ASUS and Do Gaming are hosting an exhibition tournament this Saturday (tomorrow) in Johannesburg at the Sound Room in Kyalami. To just show the scope of things first prize gets a G60 laptop (yes, the same one we reviewed) and R3000 not mentioning the Razer goodie bag and SC2 CE. The total prizes are as follows:

1st Prize
G60Jx Gaming Laptop
Starcraft 2 Limited Edition Game
Razer Gaming Bundle
R3000 Cash Prize

2nd Prize
ASUS Geforce ENGTX 470 Graphics Card
Starcraft 2 Game
Razer Gaming Bundle
R2000 Cash Prize

3rd Prize
ASUS ATI EAH 5850 Graphics Card
Starcraft 2 Game
Razer Gaming Bundle
R1000 Cash Prize

Being an exhibition it is by invitation that players were selected. The original line-up featured Dreamer, Shase, Angry African, McNoob, Alcardu, Kreefler,Rubilac and Jaxx but due to unforeseen circumstances Jaxx could not make it and as such Azul another local player will take his place. The original 8 were picked according to their seeding in South African rankings and as such are the 8 best in South Africa, for more info on the players and the seeding you can head over to 4pooled where you can find bio’s on the players and info on tournaments not forgetting replays of local players.

At the exhibition we have been promised to have a Starcraft 1 section for old players to go and get nostalgic and screens setup around the venue through which players can view the games and listen to shout casting which will be provided by Shadowthief and ZeeOne 2 locals who are actively involved in the Starcraft 2 scene.

If you can’t make it to the event have no fear as we will have all the information and hopefully a ton of pictures loaded onto the site for you to enjoy. Just a caution for those that did not get an invite please sign up at Do Gaming for your invite or as I am led to believe you might be stuck outside the venue.

We received an Email from Colin Webster, boss man of MSSA (coz we’re just so connected) revealing the following.

This year 2010 rAge and the World Cyber Games fall on the same weekend. That’s why MSSA (for those of you who don’t know :Mind Sports South Africa) together with SAMSUNG have come up with a new method to select how a competitor will to go through to the championship.

SAMSUNG along with MSSA will host qualifiers for the WCG at all the Provincial LAN Championships.

This means you, yes you the gamer will save some of that hard earned cash that would have been spent on flying, driving, kayaking to a certain location for the qualifiers. Since the Gauteng Provincial Championships have already been held the 1st and 2nd place from there have already qualified for the final play-offs which decide team selection for the WCG.

Trials will be held in:

-Bloemfontein

-Port Elizabeth

-Durban

-Cape Town

The dates are not know at the at the present time. We will let you know when we know.

As mentioned earlier this means South African Gamers will be able to compete for less than it would cost them in the past.

SAMSUNG have then also committed themselves to bringing the top two GUITAR HERO’s from Bloemfontein, Port Elizabeth, Durban and Cape Town to participate in the final play-offs to be held in Sandton City on 7 August 2010.

This means that the top 2 from each event will go to the Final Play-offs to select a team for the WCG.

Another great thing is due to what every MSSA did last year, MSSA will have met the criteria to apply for Protea Colours. That means that the gamer that goes through to represent South Africa will get Protea Colours.

This is the first time anyone will get Protea Colours for Guitar Hero.

Hmmm could be interesting. I still can’t get my mind around the fact that Guitar Hero is played competitively. What are your thoughts? Will you be trying out? Will you save money?

When Bungie announced that May the third would see the beta opened up a bit more tons of people got very excited. Just how many is that tons of players is the question. To show just how happy they are they have released stats for the first 24 hours of the beta. And here they are:

1,170,112 total players playing the beta, which is as they said almost more then they had for the whole Halo 3 beta.

157,972,986 Kills which is almost and average of 15 kills a person but I really wonder how the feeder stats are looking.

936,864,266 Seconds Spent Playing, which equates around 29.67 years if one person had to play all that alone.

All these stats are care of RocketMoose their stats guru.

Want to really see it? Go here

Question of the Day’s successor has arrived. This will be the first question of the week, and we’d like to do something different. It could actually be called Competition of the Week, but that’s boring. We like valuable input — so, Question of the Week it is. Be warned, QOTW will not the same as QOTD, in fact, it will be slightly longer and require slightly more input.

The prize will be eDreams vouchers. That’s right! R200 vouchers every week for your input. To win a voucher you’ll need to comment below with a valid email address so that we can contact you in case you win. If your email is not valid — you won’t win!

With the voucher you’ll be able to purchase things online from eDreams.co.za

This week we want to know: What does your gaming/room or gaming device look like? Include stats if you like!

Snap a photo, and post it in the comments below. Or you can email it here: qotw@egamer. If you decide to email us the photo, we’ll include it into the comments. No problem!

We’ll give away two R200 vouchers this week. Both winners will be chosen from input into this article, so make it worth it! Remember — valid email address or no prize!

To kick this off, here’s mine:

I use my PC monitor for my Xbox. It has HDMI and Sound-Out. The monitor above the Xbox is just a spare and the machine in the corner, on the floor, would be the dialup server. I have two mice and two headsets on my table because I’m currently reviewing Rapier Gaming Gear.

Two monitors: 27″ Samsung P2770H & 23″ Samsung S2333. I have two different Logitech systems for my PC and Xbox.

How about you?

Things You Need To Know:

- This competition is sponsored by eDreams.co.za. They will send out vouchers at the end of the month to minimize admin work. This means if you win next week, you’ll receive it during the last week of the month.
- Our Competition T&C
- If you only own a DS or PSP, post it! Show us what it looks like and what extra’s you own. Who knows, you might win! Everything counts.

We have no idea how valid or real this list is but it has been making it’s rounds on Twitter.

What seems to be certain from that list to appear at this years E3 is the following:

Killzone 3 (This will be one really sick announcement)
LBP2 (Curious to see the successor to the first game and how it turns out)
Dead Space 2 (The space-horror game that everyone sits with baited breath anticipating)
Guitar Hero 6 (Well this is just another GH but really wonder how well it will be received)

Some things that are likely to appear at E3
Call of Duty: MMO (the Sledgehammer project, perhaps. Since the Vietnam one is out soon.)
Mass Effect 3 ( This is a bit sudden but I guess it is just an announcement and not a release date.)
MotorStorm 3 (Not much too say about this.)
A slight possibility at E3:
Bad Company 3 (given BC2′s success, it is similar to the Mass Effect 3 announcement.)
Road Rash HD ( I would love to see this if it is the same one I used to play as a child)

And lastly the stunners:
Fahrenheit 2 (Successor to Fahrenheit something I thought that would not come with the release of Heavy Rain.)
God of War 3: Afterfall (I guess this was partially inevitable that someone would decide to make money.)
Omikuden (Only cause no one has heard of it before).

I just hope that this list is true and that we get too see these titles at E3 this year.

During the December month of 2009, Gran Turismo was available as a download on the PlayStation 3. There was then a competition which saw the 20 fastest drivers compete in a chance to enter the GT Academy bootcamp.

The time has come.

We have a winner.

France’s Jordan Tresson is the man who has won the chance to bootcamp with the GT Academy. The French driver, fan, enthusiast – etc, has undergone six weeks of training for his International C Race License.

“I never imagined I would end up here when I was on my PlayStation back in December,” Tresson, an automotive engineering student in Northern France, said. “This has always been my dream. If I could spend my time in a car then I would.”

Congratulations, and we’ll check you out in the European GT Cup!

Collen Ndlovu has won the Live Fifa Interactive Qualifier in Johannesburg and this means that he has secured his place in the FIFA Interactive World Cup Grand Final for 2010.

There were 466 people which all tried their luck to win the grand prize — a trick to Barcelona on the first of May this year.

Collen won an all expenses paid trip where he will be able to compete for the title of Fifa Interactive World Player 2010. This title not only boosts ego, but also your bank balance by $20,000 — or R140,000+.

“The first time I picked up the control today I found myself a little overwhelmed, but slowly I picked up my game,” said Ndlovu. “I’m surprised but so happy I won.”

Blah, Collen Ndlovu just sounds like a soccer player doesn’t he?

Users can create an account to protect their confidential personal details

Each User can register one or more Players with MSSA (This is useful for those Team Managers/Captains who wish to register all the Players in their Team). Player registration must be completed annually and enables those players to be allowed to compete in MSSA Championships – such Players are referred to as Registered Players.

Each User can enter a Registered Player or a Team of Registered Players into a specific Championship.

Thing that scares me about these events are… They actually choose the right games. Only if events like rAge could follow, dammit.

It’s time we launch our February competition! We’re going to do something slightly different this time round, and it requires a bit of work.

The prize this time round, is once again sponsored by BuyComputers.co.za, and it will be a COMPRO Videomate T500F Mce Hybrid Analogue+Digital Internal TV Card. Quite a lot to digest, but essentially this is a TV card with a remote.

It’s pretty handy — these features stand out to me:

Video Desktop to setup the live TV screen as wallpaper mode

Straight-to-Disc recording to VCD and DVD discs

Support SDTV and 1080i HDTV (where available)

Timeshift to pause and instant replay of live TV

We’ve added the product information on the bottom, for those interested.

Moving back to the competition, which closes on the 12th of March, just by the way.

Because the prize has something to do with HD, we’re asking that you tag something with the eGamer logo. I’ll give you some examples on what you can do.

Tag a wall/door/bridge with eGamer or i <3 eGamer

Put a note on someones back with eGamer

Hold up a sign saying i <3 eGamer

Be creative. Anything saying eGamer, and if you like, add something positive.

Some of you might remember I got KFC Bay Side to say that they love me, so try this. We’ll accept it!

Use the entry form below you to send us your image, and we’ll be sure to post the images on the site after we’ve chosen the best one.

Remember, when entering you agree to our Competition Terms & Conditions.

Once again, we’d like to thank BuyComputers.co.za for the prize. Competition closes 12 March.

Oh, and if you like, you can upload your image to the comments section below, but remember, no entries via comments will be accepted. The comments will only be for your enjoyment.

Wow, would you look at that! DotA. Amazing! National/provincial colours can be awarded for playing DotA, but, prizes through various other tournaments cannot be awarded? Rage cannot support DotA, but the MSSA can?

Online tournaments via the MSSA can support provincial colours, but no other company can sponsor online tournaments? Hmm, strange?

Strange, indeed.

Well, look, I’m not saying the MSSA is good, I’m just saying that they see through the crap behind the ‘DotA-issues’. Other companies simply ignore the game, for what reason? Piracy? Doubt it. More like because the companies with the cash/prizes play CoD/CSS/BF2.

Tell us your thoughts on this..

Oh, and sign up here.. If you’re interested — which we doubt that you will be. We’re not.

Finally… Yeah this one has been in the works for a while now. There has been a lot of buzz around a league being setup by the “new” Twilight team and after much debate/procrastinating/stalling we’re ready to kick off season 1. And for those of you who have no clue what league we’re referring to, it’s a full on 5v5 clan based Dota league.

Details, you demand details! The basic format will be a round robin where a team plays every other team in their division. Division? Yeah that’s right. Depending on the amount of signups we get, the idea is to have divisions of 8 teams. This allows us to keep the groups managable as well as group teams together that are more or less on the same skill level. As it stands we’ve currently stands, we’ve had 8 teams sign up. Here are some the teams you can look forward to (Ed: Or dread) doing battle with:

TwG – Token White Guy
A fairly newly formed team from what I can gather with some big hitters. With Mint’s dota team disbanding Waz_Mac and AsSsMan (Ed: That’s MrAsSsMan to you) have joined up with Vsdgkk and doppl3R to form TwG. I recon they’re going to show some of the more established teams a thing or two.

S0NA – Spacefreaks 0N Acid
This has to be one of the most fun teams I’ve clannied against. Good spirit and not afraid to try something different. Expect a good game from these guys.

dedA – Dedicated Abuse
Or should I say, the new dedA. dedA along with TwG decided to snatch up a few miNt players and have now added sLoJ and Lemon-Grass to their line up. Definitely favourites for this season, no matter who signs up.

ExP – Extra Pulling
Exp should also be an interesting team to watch. While I’ve never seen them play before as a team, there are a few better than average players in their squad. With the likes of Fluro, Visrucis (Ed: Imba viper is imba), CuriousGeorge and Xylon who is incidently back after his cry thread about leaving cos he didn’t make gayHL2, ExP should make for a good competitive team.

DuC – DUCoRe
A fairly old team I remember seeing in the Agasa cup back in the day. Having played against them in the UCL and getting a solid ass kicking, I’d expect to see them fighting for a top 4 spot as they’ve been playing together for quite a while and have some great synergy.

Borg
Another team that has been around for some time, borg’s lineup has changed slightly however they’re still one of the stronger sides that have signed up. Expect some good games from these guys.

We haven’t done any sort of division placing yet as we’re expecting a few more registrations. However whether your team be n00b or pro you should find yourself in a fairly evenly matched league. Registrations close on the 26th February, so time is running out. For more information on the rules and format, check out the twilight forum.

We recently got our hands on a few Battlefield Bad Company 2 Beta keys for the PC game, and we held a competition to see who could win the keys.

I’ve added the winners below, followed by why they were chosen. To be honest, it was kind of random from my part but some of their juicy comments got me interested in kicking their ass.

Oh, Tody chose a few players too.. Guess which ones. It’s an easy guess, I promise.

Potty391 – Just to prove you wrong, I hand picked you! Look, no randomizer this time :)

VexBlade – For commenting more than we asked him too.. He’s probably been shot in the head too many times. I just had to award him a key.

Alex ‘CreeChy’ Blake – Because you’ve never won anything before, and you had some weird picture which meant almost nothing to me.

Fabian – Because he was first.

sH3LLsH0K – Tody likes you. I think.

burga – Uhm, I’m a burga eating fool and I’m going to kill you first.

Joel – Please let me live.

Lonthor – Tody likes you too.

Winners.. You’ve been sent emails with keys. Use them wisely, or else.

I’ll try get some more keys for you guys. :)

Following some tragic ‘irregularities’ from our venue’s side end-September last year, Syncidy was forced underground. Have no fear though, time spent wasted is never time wasted! We are back and better than ever.

Being as excited as we are to see everyone again, we have decided to kick the embers under the Dota community in anticipation of our relaunch:

In co-op mode with Twilight Gaming and eGamer, we are running a fast paced competition the first weekend of February. Entry will be free and open to everyone from the community, but act fast as we will only allow the first 8 entries to take part. The winning side will pocket themselves an ice cold R500-00 courtesy of Syncidy Gaming.

It’s over, it’s over! The two week long competition to win a 500GB Seagate SATA II Hard Drive has come and gone. The competition was sponsored by BuyComputers.co.za

The competition just happened to have closed on the same day that Twilight celebrates it’s birthday (coincident? I think not).

Anyway, getting down to business.

There were over 170 people who entered the competition.

The Winner Is: Michael Howlett

Some of you might know him as Visrucis.

Congratulations!

* How did we choose the winner? Well, we ranked everyone in a document where the first entries were obviously entered first. After we had everyone in a single database, we took the names over to Randomizer where the first name on the new randomized list won.

Incredible Connection will kick 2010 off with a new One Night Cup series. The league will boast an Afrihost partnership which sees prizing in the form of 5GB prepaid ADSL accounts for first place, and 3GB ADSL prepaid accounts for second place, per player, per team.

The competition takes place on the 31st of January and it will involve Call of Duty 4 teams. The registration opens on the 25th of January for these teams, and there are only 19 slots available. The league structure will see 16 official teams where 3 will be substitutes in case players drop out.

Following the CoD4 Cup will be a Quake Live Duel Tournament. The QL tournament will allow for 32 players to be accepted into a best of 3 single elimination format tournament. The first place winners will receive 5GB ADSL accounts, while second place holders will receive 3GB accounts. This competition will take place on the 14th of February.

Incredible is hoping to then host another competition after this, it will involve an undecided/unannounced game. qu1ksh0t, the host, is planning to do something with Counter Strike Source, however these teams are really bad at signing up for events. So, CSS players, if you’re keen email qu1k@incredible.co.za to pre-book your spot.

You can also email qu1k@incredible.co.za for additional information on the tournament.

“Bobby Kotick has believed in the power of interactive entertainment his entire career,” said Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences boss Joseph Olin.

“The growth of Activision Blizzard, from bankruptcy to an industry leader is attributable to his unwavering drive to develop a studio model that fosters creativity to deliver great games. Activision Blizzard is home to some of the most talented developers in our industry and we are thrilled to have Bobby’s insight on how great games are built upon great talent.”

The speech is expected to draw loads and loads of attention as he loves to talk about money, a lot of money. He loves to talk about money, because he loves to take your money. All of your money. Forever.
